In the late 1990's I had a chance to attend a folk concert by Los Lobos. They played ethnic Mexican music only, and when asked why they didn't do "La Bamba"...they said they wanted to do Mexican songs (maybe meaning in Mexican and not English)

@@shaunkellison1761 yeah that's true but like staying in beat while listening to a melody which has a lot of off beat notes makes it harder and she's basically guiding the music. Normally the drums or percussion would do that while the other instruments adjust to it if they find themselves speeding up or slowing down. Staying in the right tempo is not as easy as many people think. A fun way to test that is, take a metronome, set it at a tempo of your choice(the lower the tempo is, the harder it gets!), listen to it to get the feel of the tempo, have somebody mute it for the next 4 bars and have that person turn it on again so that the next thing you hear is the 1st beat of the 5th bar and onwards. Your goal is to try and clap at the exact time of the first beat of the 5th bar(or you can start clapping already from the beginning but thats a bit easier). You can really hear whether you were on beat or off beat. If you want to further challenge yourself, try playing around with other time signatures like 3/4, 6/9 and so on. You'll find yourself practicing for quite a while but nonetheless a fun way to challenge yourself. To spice things up you can try it with an instrument rather than clapping and you'll find yourself practicing for quite a while. That's why the role of the percussion is crucial when it comes to keeping the tempo of a song when it comes to band music.
