I was born and raised Catholic. I knew at age 7 that it wasn't for me when they told be I couldn't be an altar boy, a priest, or any higher up position because I was a girl and that I could "only" be a nun!! Many of the priests and nuns were abusive and that whole eating the body of Christ and drinking his blood always creeped me the f*ck out. After attending a suburban parochial school until the 8th grade, I went to and graduated from a suburban public school. I haven't "practiced" Catholicism since 1970. My early instincts turned out to be correct.

I used to be slightly right of center and registered "I" for the first 40 years of my life and regularly voted for Republicans, some elections mostly! When the GOP let the religious right sit at the legislative table, I could not vote for any member. Maybe it's because I was raised in New England, and attended church every Sunday that was essentially a traditional mass with an invariably positive sermon about how to be a good human. I know, that's not typical, but having seen it, I can't understand why people aren't demanding the same feel in their services? Our very founding documents explicitly state that "congress shall make no law with respect to establishment of religion or practice thereof...". If any religious sect or group of them is pushing for a political outcome of any kind on any issue it will at minimum be infringing on any who choose to follow no religion, which whether we understand that non-belief, is also protected. We are all already free to believe, worship or not, to advocate for or criticize religion in any way. We have allowed religious organizations special privileges and exemptions in our society on the promise that they would tend to our "souls" as tethers to morals and decency that would guide our actions, THIS IS NOT WHAT WAS PROMISED.

I had a priest chasing my mother in church and calling her at her home after a month after my father passed away. She had belonged to this small town community church for 30 years and this new priest made it so uncomfortable she left and went to another church. He kept calling her at home. And people of the community witnessed all of this priests behavior. I finally had to call the Archbishop of the state of Michigan with an attorney on the phone to prepare for charges against the Diocese. He finally apologized and they moved him across the country to another church. It was such a disgraceful and disgusting experience to go through. This is the type of horrific behavior that they allow among other crimes.
