This is what I think they want. On the left there are 8 black dots in the squares and 9 grey dots under it. They want you to take 2 of the grey dots and put it in the squares to make that 10, then you have 7 grey dots left. So, I think the answer they are looking for is 8 + 2 + 7. But I’m not sure. I saw someone else say it should be 10 + 5 + 2. Which if you look at the dots on the right and you have the group of ten then the line of five and the line of two under it. So, if they are teaching kids to group the numbers that way 10 + 5 + 2 would be the answer. I think it’s sort of like teaching math with an abacus. They say you can count so much faster using an abacus. But I think having an actual abacus to use would make this so much easier for people to understand than trying to write it out on paper.
@theseeker4700Ай бұрын
Your right AND the fact that it took a complete paragraph to explain the problem displays the real problem lol. My kid has dyscalculia and using an abacus helps so much with his math, also seeing number patterns (like creating 5's and 10's). This type of math display is great for kids who see numbers differently, but as you mentioned, on paper this is all wrong....and in print its just confusing. Just provide a completed 10 frame and ask the darn kids what else is needed to get 17...simple.

The problem back in the day was teaching children to memorize addition, subtraction, multiplication and division tables without explaining the vocabulary. This lesson deals with grouping to form a ten to add three numbers or addends. A strategy would be to determine if two of the addends joined would make a ten and then add the last addend. The student didn’t grasp the strategy. How would you rewrite this to make a ten 6+3+4?

With all the different math subjects they had in school, as an adult I can see clearly that we were wasting our time because the only math I use and have always been using as an adult is exactly what Shuler said: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, PERIOD!!!! And maybe some measurements here and there, but that's it, unless you have a career in engineering of any kind, all that other so called math they had us doing in school was just something to keep us busy as kids!!!! Absolutely insane!!! Yeah, this new math needs to go sit down somewhere!!!!
@SonicBoomC9829 күн бұрын
Maybe, but in a sense we're also using algebra when we think "how much do I have to do of this thing to get this result. " also, depending on the field you go into, the math isn't about the math, it's about keeping your problem-solving skills trained

I’m an elementary school teacher and yes, this is a strategy we have to teach students…. This looks to be about 1st grade… us old school teachers think all these new ways of teaching math are pretty cumbersome & stupid😂. Problems like these are in our curriculum and state standards, so we have to teach it!
@victoriasmart-ajas7629 күн бұрын
So what’s the answer?
@willjauk28 күн бұрын
1 answer is 8+2 (taking 2 away from 9 to get you to 10) then add 7 to get you to 17. The powers that be decided that students should be able to decompose numbers. Believe or not some students do well with these concepts, for the kiddos who struggle… the good teachers teach plain old facts as well!
@joannamccloudАй бұрын
They'd have to add a negative number but the teacher probably still would've made it wrong as it leaves no room to do. That teacher needs to explain this!!
@bororobo3805Ай бұрын
I don't think negative numbers might have been introduced at this level 😂
@honeybwn24Ай бұрын
The only way that this could work using the concept is the answer would need to be 10+5+2. Negative numbers wouldn't have been introduced yet.
@yrb5512Ай бұрын

It's fill in the ten frame, which is 10, + 7 more, 2 from the number 9 plus the remaining. It's a method to help students use ten as the number then count on. But students do get very confused.. there are no negative numbers in 1st grade math.

yes, I thought so as well, but then I saw they both had plus signs, this stuff is cra cra, I once tried to help my nephew do some math problems the old school way, he was like, nope Auntie they want us to do it a different way. I was like , nothing was wrong with it in the first place, they change it now it makes no sense. We the village must step in, and help our babies, the school system has failed too many times, especially when it comes to history, now they are doing it with math. Lord help us and or babies.

That’s what I thought too! 8+9+ -7=10. F them dots, would’ve threw me all the way off😂
@honeybree0328 күн бұрын
8+2+7 Or 7+1+9 The 10 is the [8+2] or [9+1] It's not asking you to make the answer 10. It's asking you to find a number 10 in this addition sentence to make adding the total simpler. Easier to add 7 to 10 and know that's 17 than it is to add 8+9 in your head. It's teaching how to break the numbers down. Some people do it like this in their heads. This is teaching people how to do that mental math on paper.
@joygee6982Ай бұрын

It's mentally switching from one type of learning to the next. Some are visual, others are not. It's not simple for some when they learn/ed differently. Teachers just following district orders/curriculum.

The thought is to “borrow” 1 from 8 to make 9 a 10 and then add the 7 to create 17. When we (I am 53) were in school we learned the whole number like whole words. Now they are seeking to create patterns (like the rhythm of counting by 2’s, 5’s, and 10’s) for students to count quicker and without using fingers. The concept is to find more than one way to arrive at an answer when all children don’t think the same… signed former math teacher.
