at some point we as a society need to recon with how funny it is that the #1 bit for edgy pro-offensive-humor "we need to stop being so triggered as a society!" comedians is that someone concern-trolled them about one of their jokes on twitter and it triggered them so much it destroys their career

Everyone is free to say whatever "controversial" thing they want, but you can't be mad that more people get upset than like it and those people decide they dont want their money going to you anymore. So many "cancel culture ruined comedy" comedians got used to people liking them because they were being genuinely funny that when they start getting lazy and punching down they confuse "Eh, thats not really that funny, no thanks" with "comedy is illegal now!".
@incidentlyaniguana2193
@incidentlyaniguana2193 Жыл бұрын
That is true in some cases but the issue is the internet made outrage a commodity. So there are people who just get cancelled over the stupidest stuff, then they start trending on twitter with a bunch of idiots mindlessly reacting to it, then the comedian might loose their job or sponsors because of something 90% of people have no problem with. Previously, unless you were doing some truly bad stuff, you could have a career. But now if you aren't portraying yourself flawlessly, you risk shooting your career in the foot. It has definitely had a negative effect on the comedy world. As it turns out, truly great comedy general requires bucking against the status quo. Otherwise it's boring and predictable.

About dave Chappelle i think his audience also just went from people who thinks he's funny to people who agree with him politically (and think he is funny) so if he loses his political stance he loses his fans so he keeps bringing it up
@xoire9754
@xoire9754 15 күн бұрын
His audience also used to be people who agree with him politically. A lot of his jokes were a commentary on race and a lot of what he did was to push back against the margianalisation and othering of his community. His jokes were always about punching up - and even when he made jokes about gay people or other communities, he always walked it back to an area of acceptance. One of his biggest issues with his industry, and the reason why he left comedy for so many years, is that he realised that many of his jokes weren't being received in the way he intended. He felt like he could hear in the way people laughed, that they were laughing at black men and not with them. He didn't want black people to be disappointed in him, and he didn't want to be disappointed in himself. Fast forward, he's back and despite recognising in the past that he had a responsibility to ensure that he had a positive impact on margianalised communities, he now has no issue with the damage he does to the trans community (and has decided to extend this to the entire queer community for some reason). He went from being conscious of his impact, to now just wanting to get paid and his politics has changed now that he's had some time with his money. I don't think it's about needing to keep his new community - I think it's about being tired of working against the system and selling out, choosing to work for it.

You know, ‘Am I really, could I be, I hope I’m not one of them.’ And the women who assert themselves and are competent are a threat to these men, and so are immigrants in terms of jobs.” - George Carlin The inverse of people who are offended by everything are people who get called out on punching down and using “Comedy” as a shield from criticism. Yeah, most edgy humor only works if everyone (especially the person doing it) is in on the joke. If you're taking it seriously at face value it's not an edgy joke, it's just a controversial opinion. Chappelle illustrates this really clearly. A lot of his earlier material works because he's mostly dismantling racist ideas from the inside out, the racist jokes are funny partially because he's highlighting the absurdity of anyone actually thinking like that. The transphobia stuff on the other hand falls flat because he legitimately doesn't seem to understand trans issues or want to put any effort into understanding them, so instead of twisting transphobic jokes to highlight how dumb transphobia is he's just saying transphobic shit and laughing. It doesn't help that the writing is also worse since he's not experienced enough with the topic to bring a legitimately fresh and funny perspective to it. TLDR: "it's just a joke" isn't a defense if it isn't actually a joke and you're just too afraid to say "nah, this is what I actually believe," which is what a lot of hacks that fall into this edgy humor trap don't get.
@Clamflesh
@Clamflesh Жыл бұрын
@TheSquareOnes Shane Gillis is doing that really well, in my opinion. The things he says are offensive, but it's kind of the whole point. @DCzero50 not even like morally confident liberal either. Like he skirts around terribly bigoted personalities while talking about them like he doesn't care at all or pretending he doesn't know. Just very milquetoast or however you spell that. But admittedly that's how you keep the largest audience. Apathetic centrism without ever decrying any belief no matter how obviously harmful. Speaking of being offensive, it really should be more normalized to shame people for being evil.

@@princessgarfi3ld oh no doubt, it's less prevalent in modern shows here but to be honest most of the older shows, even though I do love them have a ton of bad jokes in them that aged really poorly, not just with trans people. However at least with other issues generally the butt of the joke is the person being racist, sexist etc, you're meant to think they're the horrible idiot. But transphobia gets more of a pass. When people complain about being "cancelled" and the consequences, they are really complaining about free speech and capitalism for two simple reasons: 1. Free speech means everyone gets free speech. If you say something controversial, people have the right to respond to that. 2. Because people have the right to respond however they wish, and capitalism means that most establishments you interact with are privately owned, you can experience consequences like being fired from your job for what you said online. Your employer is also a private citizen, and you are working on private property. Imagine if you didn't have the right to kick someone off your own property. That's why cancel culture can be so powerful. Free speech has benefits and consequences, and you can't have your cake and eat it too. You can't exercise your right to free speech, then complain about it when others exercise their right to ostracise you.
@core-nix1885

Freedom of speech = Freedom to unperson? I don't know how anyone can justify taking a person's livelihood just because they have radical opinions (especially when power is transferred to corporations and governments to enforce this). Just as speech has consequences, those consequences have consequences - you'd be a fool to believe firing, censoring, arresting and/or harassing people for things that they say/write won't foster hatred and resentment. It amazes me that the "left-wing" position is to support the bourgeoisie against the proletariat in this regard.

I just congratulated my friend for having a baby, the only other friend in my group besides me who's a dad now. Naturally I called the other guys a bunch of eunuchs and I had to remind them of who I am because their skin has turned to paper since college. People just used to hack away at each other with a smile on both ends of the conversation, it was great.
