If you have something that is physically obvious, it's easiest to address that as your opener. Your audience has already noticed it, more than likely, and the sooner you address it, the sooner you can get them to listen to what you're saying.

Very good point as well. I love it.

Also that's how you can also prepare your set as well as when you're riffing in this nature you can add in your own jokes to these riffs. Makes a good combo.

I call it smacking the room... You gotta do something to gain their respect in 30 seconds.. Sometimes you don’t even have to say anything kinda just look and if your presence is strong enough they’ll respect you.

Sup J Baylock. How lomg can an opener be? I have a show to prepare for and its my first time but its 5 mins. My opener last for that long but it will be funny tho. My question is should i do the 5 mins opener for my first time or just cut it short?
@Thenochillofcomedy2 жыл бұрын
Thx for watching the video. 5 minutes is good enough for a novice comedian, however if you feel like you can do more and the host gives you that time, then go for it. At this stage it's about getting as much stage time as possible and hot as many stages as you can. I am happy that you're starting this journey.

I'm physically disabled w MS. I use a massive walker thats fashionable. I'm just starting out n I would cherish help to know when and how I address my disability to bookers and audience? When I disclose its for contents and some universal jokes about pluses and minuses of being a touring comedian I'd like to be embraced by folks cause of life not pitty. Im a diability advocate n I'd like to still pop bits into my act without being a bummer as MS is like sloth speed ALS.

Have you ever performed onstage before?

For other types of public speaking but I'm a very new formal comic. The local club closed for a couple weeks due to a rona outbreak n before that was a spike in virus from Thanksgiving. I'm going to perform at the new Brooklyn tavern in Columbia SC open mic. Nonetheless, I'm a Canadian-American from Detroit and embody a special audacious hope. I've been in South Carolina for a decade rehabilitating from 20 leisons/plaques in grey n white matter.(trained myself to swallow food n liquids; grip strength; how to walk; various daily living tasks; how to use money; and work on overcoming cog fog and fatigue. My accommodations so far have been my walker, pacing myself, VERY self managing and motivated. I've been lucky to have had help from non comics to come up with 3, 5, 15 minute sets that are locked n ready to go. I haven't really seen anyone yet break their own ice as comics about their disability. It's not as important to my comedy but it is an issue for ablists I've encountered along the way whether well meaning to offensive, but that's unfortunately a reality. I have a tremendous work ethic (worked 15-18 hour days as a community organizer living mostly outta my car and hotels due to the nature of that job) and i am extroverted and disciplined /experienced enough for a road comic I'm just ready to join into the double Dutch of gigs the last couple years has been for performers. I'm vaxed n boosted. My goal is to be an opener for a touring comic that's willing to take a chance on me and bring me along to help warm up the crowds for them in exchange for food, lodging, travel, and a small stipend like most pro comics do/have while touring. (Not being braggocious just realistic as a millennial to get fair treatment)

@@difranophile 1st off I want to say thank you for not giving up on life. Also you have to build up your fan base. You do this by having a social media that's full of content. Facebook, IG, Tik Tok, and KZbin. Do some skits, film your performance sets, and post those. Tell people where to find you on social media. Once you start buzzing and become recognized, then you can move to the next step. Right now you gotta show people that your serious. My other recommendation is to get this book called The comedy bible, by Judy Carter. Also if you want me to make a video about it I can if you want.
