He acts like it’s a struggle for these players to live off of millions of dollars. Once your career is over. Get a real job. The average player makes more in 4 years than I would in a lifetime. I have zero sympathy and find it comical how out of touch these millionaires are.
@sora44402 ай бұрын
Yea idt these ppl realize how much money they make. If you make 100k a year for 30 years up to retirement age, that nets you 3 million in your lifetime. He's saying that the average player with an average career in his day would make 8 million in his career. Almost 3 times what a man makes at a 100k salary in his lifetime. And a 100k salary isn't the norm, that's top 10-15% in some states...

@brett26602 ай бұрын
Agreed, but what he did say was eye opening to me. You can even back into the numbers a little bit. In his example, say someone gets a contract for $10M over 5 years. Well, I'm assuming $1-$2M goes to your agent. Probably $4M goes to taxes, insurance, accounting, and/or legal. So, you have $4M left for you and family. A house is probably easily $1M. Helping family with their debts, houses, cars, etc. is probably another $1M. Now, you have $2M left to live off of, which is doable, but these are basketball players, not finance experts. I could easily see someone without decent money skills blowing through that in a few years.
@agi21602 ай бұрын
Only "2M left to live off" doesn't require you to be a finance expert. It requires you not to be a retard. Come on, Brett 😂

@rososhow2031Ай бұрын
Well, when you think about how that 5 million is taxed and all the fees, expenses it's understandable, especially if that's your only skill. You have to compete with other individuals in the job market once they can't play anymore. How do you maintain the current standard of living or even the average standard if they go from making 5 million to 50k a year or less, because that's the only skill most will have obtained.
@plinkertonmanАй бұрын
@@rososhow2031 they shouldn't live like they're making 5 mil a year lol. they can literally live off the interest of their millions comfortably, they're losing their millions because they are overspending on luxury items. also they're getting booted from the NBA in their mid to late 20s. they can obviously obtain skills. they aren't some poor 50 year old draftsman getting automated.
@speed672520 күн бұрын
That’s why when any of the leagues that go on strike complaining about they aren’t making money get laughed at. The MLB league minimum is $740k annually. NHL is $750k. NFL is $795k and NBA is $1.1 mill. I do not feel sorry for you. For $740k a year I’ll be the first one to the park and the last one to leave. You get either $34.50 per day or $117.50 and tip allowance in season for meals. You don’t pay for travel and hotels. And you get to play on beautiful fields all around the country. There are gym facilities at most hotels and stadiums. If you can get paid more, great. But don’t complain about your salaries when most people in this country and around the world don’t make that.
@rososhow203120 күн бұрын
@speed6725 The nba brings in over $10 billion a year as a whole. Asking for .05% really isn't asking for much. The average team makes $353 million a year. We need not to go against what how much of the pie someone wants. The producers of the products should get paid. The owner of such product isn't doing the labor.
@rososhow203120 күн бұрын
How should we calculate the return on labor and time? If your labor and time help bring in $10 billion and there's 600 employees. What percentage should the employees get in return? When the owners of the teams are selling these days, they are receiving double if not 10x or more what they paid for the team. Do the owners not deserve to be paid 2x or more for their investment. The individual doing the labor also is investing their life with the company, hoping the company does right by the employees.

Not to mention you could be traded and will have to uplift your family. Also, it's the same shit with rappers. If you don't come from a situation where you're use to having money, you will spend it recklessly. Also, keep an eye out for them family/friend vultures who swoop in with their hands out.

So, I get that life as a player is likely more expensive, but if you have 8 million guaranteed, that's 8x the 50k salary someone makes for 20 years. Going broke with that money is not because of the salary, it's because of the spending.

Grown children with no college education or job experience who play a game for a living for millions.... what could go wrong? If i had a million bucks i could retire today at 41 and when i die my kids could have the million bucks left in the account.

It is now a new world with NIL in college. These kids are getting help at 18 and the colleges are setting them up with professional money managers. Now that good money can be made in college, a lot of guys will stay all 4 years. By the time they enter the professional ranks, they are much better prepared.

The aver1ge american at 75k a year working 30 years will make 2.25 million. In their lifetime. Children in the nba making that in 6 months. Don't talk to me about spending
@wings31182 ай бұрын
If anything, this should hammer home that spending is everything. Most important lesson my parents ever taught me, is that the way to save up, is to keep your spending the same when you go up in salary. Maybe you feel like they're talking down to you, and that's fair, but don't rob yourself of the larger point that can help you out in life.
@matth98812 ай бұрын
😂 yea but how many really making 75k+ for 30years straight . I would say under a Mil would be more realistic
@CrisJunkie2 ай бұрын
You can't be this clueless. It's all about spending and what they spend their money on. If they get paid 2.25 million in a season, they don't get the entire amount. They pay their agent fees, federal taxes, state taxes, jock tax, etc. Then, with the amount left, they spend on their homes, luxury cars, families, parents, friends, women, clubs, fashion, jewelry, gambling, etc. They can have a million one day and the next thing they know is they're broke. How many rich-gone-broke NBA or NFL players' stories do you need to hear to be convinced? Watch those videos about how players have spend their first million to see what lifestyle they have.

So to summarize there are four big fixed costs historically with joining the NBA that players underestimate - buying a top-end home, buying a top-end luxury or performance car, paying agents, and funding housing and retirement for their parents. These easily cost millions of dollars, and for the average player in previous era, this was pretty much what they made in their career, though they spent money additionally in a way that assumed they would keep this income.
