Probably one of the overlooked songs, but such a vital one for understanding the narrative of this Rock Opera.
Link to the original song by Pink Floyd:

Great insights and commentary Amy. I also really liked the strategically placed song clips by Vlad that correspond to what you were saying. Love your commentary on history, music, literature, all being essential to our humanity. Unfortunately these humanities are not emphasized as much in our education system today, like they used to be. While science, technology, engineering and mathematics (the STEM education emphasis) are also very important, I don't think they are the only thing that is important in education as well rounded people. Reminds me of earlier during Pink's school experience in "Another Brick in the Wall Pt2", or when he is belittled by his teacher for his poetry in the movie. To answer Pink's question, "am I too old, is it too late?" I would say you're almost never too old to change paths. They just become shorter.

Speaking of literature, I just finished a contemporary sci-fi book "Red Rising" by Pierce Brown, which had a quote near the end that is relevant here: "Words are power... Words are a weapon stronger than he knows. And songs are even greater. The words wake the mind. The melody wakes the heart." This is in reference to an illegal song, punishable by death. It is set in a future modeled on the Roman Empire (even the names are Roman), but with an even stronger caste based system that has colonized our solar system.

Regarding the "Will I remember the song?" line, Syd Barrett "forgot" songs while performing onstage. It must've had quite an impact on Roger seeing his friend lose his way like that. Referenced again in "and when the band you're in starts playing different tunes, I'll see you on the dark side of the moon." Another reference, I think, to Syd losing his way onstage and in mind.

So much of the whole catalog of Pink Floyd's music had references to Syd, it was a true trauma in the band's experience. That and Roger Water's problems that eventually broke up the group with the Final Cut.

1/ This new editing style is marvelous. It's so efficient to hear what you're talking about when you're talking about it. 2/ Amy, you really need to react to more Pink Floyd's because those reactions are the most brilliant ever. Not only did you avoid all the false obvious, but you got really deep into this human nature exposition. And with eloquence and sincerity that almost made me cry. Yes, we need food for our souls. And the Virgin Rock channel has a full stock. Cheers!

Great analysis! There's another reason the show must go on. It's not explicitly mentioned, but it's alluded to in the movie during the comfortably numb scene: Money. A lot of people stand to lose a lot of money if Pink doesn't make the gig. Not the least of whom is Pink himself. And we know that Waters is very aware of money and its power, because he wrote a whole song about it ("Money" on Dark Side of the Moon). I notice that you tend to bypass the surface story in favor of the metaphoric one. Nothing wrong with that of course, but I feel that they're both equally important. One of the relationships that Pink burns is with his audience. We haven't gotten there, but we're about to. Because in order to rebuild, Pink has to be left with nothing. If he still has his audience (and the money they provide) he can keep avoiding things (It's no big deal to trash a hotel room if you have endless money to throw at it.) But in his drugged up, psychotic state he decides that he's going to let Fascist Pink tell the audience what he thinks of them. Which needs to happen, but not for the reason he thinks. And that's another reason the show must go on. So Pink can bottom-out fully. None of this can happen if there isn't a real, literal show to do. Off topic slightly: One thing I've always wondered about in this story: Who/where are Pink's bandmates? I get that they don't really figure into the story as it is, but a musician's relationships with his bandmates is a very important one. (I also think it's rather telling that Mr. Huge Ego Waters didn't write any bandmates into the story.)

what Pink does next is very much NOT the show going on. The show going on means that he gives the audience what it wants and he keeps up the appearance of being what people want him to be. That keeps the money and adulation flowing. The show must go on, but then it very much doesn't. He does something both horrifying and authentic instead.

Absolutely fantastic analysis as usual and if you add the context of Rogers catalyst for the idea behind the wall that he was feeling more and more isolated from his audience who were making a lot of noise through Quiter parts of their set. "He felt like there was a wall between him and his audience" although the wall is not autobiographical Roger like any great artist levers off his experience when creating his work, He never knew his Farther who was killed at the battle of Anzio in WW2 when he was a baby, He disliked school and with comfortably numb the lyrics were inspired by his experience of being injected with tranquilizers for stomach cramps before a performance in 1977 He said, "That was the longest two hours of my life, trying to do a show when you can hardly lift your arm." The live show of the Wall was performed with a physical wall being built between the audience and the band then being knocked down at the end of the concert most of the time the audience could not see the band.

Hi Amy, I love this series! I have tried twice in my life to 'get' The Wall, but I never really got it - I'm rather a Dark Side of the Moon fan ... please get to that next! But I've developed a whole new appreciation for this album through this series - it is so insightful. Your commentary has also made me realise that parts of my own life are very relatable to this album - the building of a wall around me. Anyway, greatly enjoying your journey and the enlightenment. Given that you're a piano teacher, it's a shame that you have thus far missed out on a lot of piano-based rock and roll ... I think you would greatly enjoy delving into Nina Simone - a virtuoso pianist who studied at Juilliard and would have been a classical pianist were it not for racism. She was a unique talent - both as a pianist and vocalist. Also Elton John - another classically trained pianist and one of the biggest rock artists ever. If you want a pleasant diversion for a bit of fun, try Nut Rocker by B Bumble and the Stingers - a Tchaikovsky rip-off from the early 1960s! And then there's Billy Joel - Piano Man! Also, not rock music so not for this channel, but purely for your own enjoyment and a laugh, have you come across Victor Borge? He was a comedian who based a lot of his act around piano playing. And, then there's Les Dawson - a British comedian who was famed for playing the piano badly .. but, as you will know, you have to be a really good pianist to be able to play badly intentionally! Both worth a google! Also, you must watch the Morecambe and Wise sketch with Andre Previn from 1971 - it is a classic! I'm sure you will love it! One last addendum - I am a huge Queen fan, so also greatly enjoying your Queen 50 series. And I have learned a lot along the way, including new appreciation for hidden gems. You have missed a couple of other hidden gems though: '39 and The Prophet's Song on A night At The Opera - both Brian May songs, the first a unique song by a guy who was doing a degree in astro-physics about space-time travel and relationships. The second ... well, the choral multi-tracks are incredible - an amazing canon/3 part harmony with delayed counterpoint. It has been described as Brian's Bohemian Rhapsody. It's cruelly overlooked because it's on the same side of the same album as that masterpiece. Also contains Brian May playing a toy koto. Above all else though ... March of the Black Queen from Queen II ... this was Freddie Mercury perhaps experimenting before Bo Rhap and a crucial point in his musical development! It's another 6 minute masterpiece! Just for additional info ... in your video for Love of My Life, you commented that the band could have simply got in a harp player, rather than Brian May going through the torturous process of recording each harp chord piece by piece. That was not Queen's way: they were very reactionary against anything 'false', and were determined that they should be able to play everything that was on their albums. Their first 8 albums, I think it was, proudly boasted "no synthesisers". They were genuine musicians who wanted to play the music themselves, however hard it was! Thinking about it, another gem you missed was "Good company", another Brian May song on A Night at the Opera ... he tried to mimic the sound of various instruments using his guitar, and he also plays a ukelele on it too. Also, linking to one of your recent vids, the message of the song is quite similar to Cat's in the Cradle. Finally, you must look into Brian May's guitar! As far as I know, he is the only world-class major guitarist who has played all his biggest hits on a home-made guitar! He made it with his dad when he was a teenager from a fireplace! It's called the Red Special!

The thing about this song that has always stood out to me, was the vocal harmonies. None of the members of Pink Floyd have fantastic singing voice, but those that do sing use what they have to maximum ability. To get the harmonies they wanted for this song, they had to bring in some heavy hitters. Thery were looking for a Beach Boys style harmony and got something that I consider even better. When Roger played this song at the Berlin Wall show, the vocal harmonies were handled mostly by members of The Band, with musical director duties for the show being handled by Robbie Robertson.

So … here we are now, entertain us 😉 “I didn’t mean to let them take away my soul” can also mean a regret in pursuing the rock star life, which Roger Waters has stated on a number of occasions as what was going through his head, especially after the enormous success of The Dark Side of the Moon. In fact, he points to the 1974 UK shows - where Shine On You Crazy Diamond was performed - as an example of “not being there”. All of this will heavily inform Wish You Were Here (album for sure, song to some extent). This can also apply to “where has the feeling gone?”. Another thing that is worth pointing out is the initial running order based on the first run record sleeves where “Hey You” was supposed to be the last song on Side C following “Comfortably Numb”. In that order, I can imagine Pink being in the backstage desperate for some kind of connection. This is also helps set up the presence of “worms”. So “The Show Must Go On” continues not from “Comfortably Numb”, but from “Hey You”. It can mean that even with his anxieties or second-guessing or regrets about building his wall, he now has to … “drive on”. As dementia was brought up, there is a musical effort to illustrate what occurs there. It’s called Everywhere at the end of time and it’s from an experiment electronic project called The Caretaker. It’s more than six hours long and it’s a very intense listening experience.

I'm going to dissent from the Floyd-miration here. I love the mystery, experimentation, & soundscapes of Floyd's earlier recordings, esp "The Dark Side of the Moon" & "Meddle." But from the time of its release to the present, I've always found "The Wall" a turgid drag. The music and lyrics are pure-Pink, there is precious little distance between that character and the music itself. It's dull, monotonous, claustrophobic, witless, and depressing. I do not understand how anyone could want to listen to "The Wall" more than once -- this is a recording best forgotten, next to Floyd's much more adventurous earlier work.

"Must the show go on...?" This is exactly what Roger Waters had been asking himself as he dragged his tired, fed-up, disillusioned body and mind on the 1977 Animals tour; on what I believe to be the last date in Montreal, he started yelling at people and eventually spat on a fan, a memory he has always recalled in disgust... on that day, the concept of The Wall was born in Roger's mind, and yes, the show did indeed go on (thankfully!). Thanks as always Amy.

Interesting this exploration of innocence and accountability. Being a victim or accepting responsibility for our own actions. I believe you are spot on about this album and its meaning. This subject (victimhood and accepting responsibility) is also explored in the Genesis concept album 'The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway'. In it, Rael discovers his humanity by learning to accept responsibility and find his real feelings. He accepts his brother John in the end, just as he accepts himself.

Great analysis. I do however want to put a little weight behind the more "literal" interpretation of the song. I'm not saying no to yours, more a "both and." Pink Floyd is a band that has had a very strained relationship with the music industry (see the whole Wish You Were Here album, especially Welcome to the Machine and Have a Cigar) and watched their first front man go through a mental breakdown, which they largely blamed on it. This song feels like Pink giving into his managers and agreeing to go out and do his "job," but he is going without his "soul" the part that makes him a human and an artist. There is a schism. The physical body leaves, while Pink stays sheltered behind the wall, and a body that you are not in control of can be a dangerous thing to both you and others (as we see in the rest of the album).

Great analysis! Roger often wrote about the things he was experiencing on the most personal levels, striving for that conveyance of sincerity that good art relies on. He was scared of going insane, like his friend Syd (who's real name was also Roger). Most of the great atists spend their entire lives, strivin6g to convey their messages with that level of sincerity. At the Grammy's last night, one of the greatest songwriters of the 20th Century performed for her first time. At 80 years of age Joni Mitchell performed a song of reflection and perspective, that conveyed more gravitas than any single performance I've ever seen.

Fantastic Amy, I am one of those who's happy to see The Wall series continuing. I like this series over The Beatles and Queen series, it's just my vote, nothing more, it's all good. Thank you guys.

If the thought of a (possibly Catholic?) Japanese Schoolgirl Soprano Descant power chording alongside two virtuoso guitars cannot drag you away from all the schadenfreude and zeitgeist of The Wall I don't know what will. THE ANTIDOTE is "My Purple Past" by DEERHOOF. Not only will it completely blow your mind it will also put a massive grin on your chops. I don't know how they do it! Sublime!

OK. Maybe a silly reference but it comes from one of my favorite movies and it is, actually, the moral of the story. From The Princess Bride when Wesley says "Life IS pain. Anyone who tells you differently is trying to sell you something." A life without pain is also a life without joy and isn't worth living.

You're right to notice how rock music often takes stock idioms and phrases as the focus of songs and also sometimes album titles. I don't know exactly what that tells us about the cultural and generational context of this musical genre. Perhaps it's a convenient device for bringing some poetic, psychological and social depth into this popular genre without losing the average listener. Or maybe these are just ready-made building blocks for creating lyrical content. It would be an interesting thought to pursue sometime.

Indeed, it's a great point to notice. My first reaction would be, art and specifically songs, is a reflection of the time it is created. So, it's normal it integrates contemporary idioms. But I don't think it's a general recipe view how wildly and in different forms this is used: some start the trend, some follow it, some go deep into the meaning, some just use it as placeholders or to mock it. Also, I guess it's kinda dangerous to use it too much or too dated, because idioms don't age well. They may trend for a few years, but will inevitably be replaced by new ones. And some idioms are wildly understood, but some ain't. So sometimes, it can widen your audience, sometimes make it narrow. That's why it's so hard to export Rap songs outside of the country: they are using too much localized and dated symbols, that no one knows outside that country. And you'll notice that long standing songs/art don't use any localized/dated image. Songs that talk about specific public figures or brands or news events are so obsolete one or two decades later.

In the movie "The Wall" by Alan Parker this song has an added verse that read: "Do I have to stand up Wild eyed in the spotlight? What a nightmare. Why Don't I turn and run." The song was shortened in the disco version due to lack of space. For the same reason, again in the disco version, the song "What shall we do now", a song that introduces Young Lust, was eliminated and Empty Space has been shortened.

This entire series is epic. I’ve enjoyed it so much. Really looking forward to the Trial and Run Like Hell. But more than that…I honestly can’t wait to hear your summary video of the whole thing and what you think of the work as a whole! Clearly you appreciate it but we love to hear you say it! :D

There indeed may be layers of meaning to this song, and to the album as a whole, but they are also literal. In Comfortably Numb the "doctor" also says "That'll keep you going for the show. C'mon it's time to go." There are many references to his being a rock music performer in the album and this is yet another. There is one more after this. Pink Floyd also sang about this on other albums. "Welcome to the Machine" is a great example. The music industry that can consume and use up a person who is not ready for it.
