I definitely miss Superhero books being about action and more stand alone titles. I don’t mind some introspection and soap opera elements if done right. But they are not being done right. If I want to read an indie comic I will pickup one instead. I love indie comics, but I also like my action packed Superhero comics too.

I think having indie influences in mainstream comics is a great thing but it only works in sort of smaller scope, self contained stories. A good example would be Matt Wagner. Back in the 90's and 2000's he rose to fame with his Grendel series and that got him a gig writing Sandman Mystery Theatre and a Madame Xanadu series for DC/Vertigo which imho are very good, unique and pretty much on their own in the grand scheme of the DCU afaik, even if both characters are nominally part of it.

No one wants to go to film school to churn out Michael Bay movies. But I'm not sure why. These popcorn action flicks make a ton of money, and are loved by millions. Same with Spider-Man and the Avengers. Todd McFarlane certainly wasn't shy about being happy doing Spider-Man. I'm not sure why today's artists feel they have to be more edgy and deep, rather than just telling a high-quality but straightforward story. Claremont and Stern were putting out great books with a balance of characters and action. They weren't re-hashing Dorian Grey to work out some subtle theme. I would think today's creators would be happy to be put in the same category as Claremont, Stern, and Perez. Not everyone has to be a Gaiman or a Moore. If everyone is trying to get the same level of depth and in similar ways, then no one stands out as unique.

Is someone eating Pop Rocks or something in the background? That sound had me laughing and mind boggled... lol.

I get the point being made here, but I was consistently bothered by the lexicon. Not to be all anal about it but Doom Patrol, Sandman, Swamp Thing etc.... none of those were "indie" comics. They were published by mainstream mega-publisher DC Comics. Yes, they did have a different style from the standard superhero comics of their time, but I'm not sure that it's even an "indie" style... All those writers came from mainstream publishing backgrounds. Maybe we should be saying... "alternative" comics here? (It's still not a great description but at least it's closer...)
