These aren’t finished carpentry by any means. I didn’t want the weight of the cabinets to be too heavy to place on my upstairs floor. So that is why they are made of plywood and not a heavier material. But the ease of access for my books is what I love the best. Easily the best thing of I’ve ever done in regards to storing comic books.

Thanks for the kind words. The truth is that I would not count my comic book cabinets as finished carpentry. I was trying to make these as light as could be, and as cheap. These cabinets are on my second floor and the weight of comic books can add up. So the material of the cabinets needed to be light but strong enough to hold the weight of the comics themselves. Also cheap. I wanted to build an entire unit, one row of four drawers, out of one 4x8 sheet of plywood and a 4x8 sheet of mdf board. I may have gone with different material if this was on top of a concrete slab where weight was not a worry. Even though I say this isn’t finished carpentry. I still love the rough look and the ease of use for my collection. Thanks again for the kind words.

Very nice design and execution!! A few questions... 1. What is the pound rating of the slides? 2. And do you recall what brand or where you purchased them? 3. Also, can you confirm the measurements of one of the 4 cabinet openings that house the slides and drawers? 4. How did you connect your plywood pieces? Guessing pocket screws as there are no fasteners visible that I can see on the exterior of the cabinet. Thank you very much!
@MattWoodsComics Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. 1. I remember the pound rating for the slides that I purchased were over 100 lbs. I ordered extra because that I know that as my collection grows we will need to make more drawers. 2. The slides are unbranded. Bought them off of eBay. Took almost a month to arrive. Even though they don’t have a name brand on the slides. They are very stout and work great. 3. I’ll measure the opening later this evening when I’m home. 4. I didn’t get fancy with the screws on this project. I used decking screws and counter sunk them. For the rigidity and squareness there is a back board attached. That makes these cabinets very structural sound and sturdy.

@MattWoodsComics9 ай бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. Glad you like these. Makes collecting so much easier. I weighted the benefit of adding a three inch base to the bottom to whether the top row would be too high to my 5’10 frame. The comics are on my top floor in the house and I don’t have any water pipes up this high in the house. If these were on a lower floor, then without a doubt they would have had a base on the bottom.

My husband has so many comics and they’re just in boxes in our basement I’ve been wanting to make a comic display room and I’d really like to learn how to make drawers like this
@MattWoodsComics Жыл бұрын
These drawers were made with two things in mind. Weight and price, the drawers are on the second floor of my house. I did not want to put too much weight on the floor joists. That is why the outer shell is made of raw plywood. MDF would have been a nicer finish but would have weighed 3X the current weight. The other goal was to keep the price low. The price still isn’t “cheap” but since it wasn’t going to be the nicest grade of furniture it might as well be cheap. These drawers work well in my upstairs comic book room but they would not look as nice in a common area of the house. These are not furniture grade. That being said I love how these turned out. They make storing my comics so much easier and more organized. The design was literally a sketch on the back of a cocktail napkin. If you know how to build a box out of wood. These are easy to make. If not they are still “easy” to make but you need to do research to learn how to make a box. The only added step is to add drawer slides and connect the two boxes. My carpentry skill level is not quite a novice but far far from a master carpenter.
@blacklabelminiatures3 ай бұрын
After 4 years, I'm curious if you've seen any off gassing issues with the wood on your bags.
@MattWoodsComics3 ай бұрын
That was a legitimate question that I had myself. But after four years I’ve not seen any yellowing of the bags and boards that have been stored in the drawers. Even in a long box stored in a dry room you will see some yellowing after a half dozen years or so. The poly bags would be the first place that gasing issues showed up. Since it has only been four years, it might not have been long enough to determine. So far so good. No noticeable gasing issues detected. Honest to goodness great question and one that I have been monitoring closely.

That base idea is a great thought. The floor that the comic book room is on doesn’t have any water pipes on it. The thought of a base did cross my mind. If I only made them 3 high, there would have been a 3 inch base. But since we built them 4 high we decided to not put a base underneath. That way the top isn’t too tall.

that great looking, and so practical. I struggle with keeping my collection organized. I switched to short boxes a while back because moving long boxes was difficult. I like that how you make things modular with the 1x4 design; actually that's the reason i switched to short boxes, because it gave me more flexibility with stacking/arranging. Since I'm not very handy, I might consider hiring someone in my area to make something like your setup. Q: how do you keep safe from the top shelves pivoting forward if all 4 shelves are extended?
@MattWoodsComics2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for the kind words. The answer on how I keep the top shelf from tipping is to only open one or two drawers at a time. Very few times have I ever needed to open more than one of them up at the same time. You can always put a connecting plate on the sides to keep the top cabinet from flipping. I’ve thought about doing that myself but honestly never found the need to do so.

The price of lumber is crazy high right now. I just got tired moving my long boxes every time I need to find a book or put a book away. That gets old after awhile. Making these drawers made my life so much easier.

Do you have drawings prints available

I don’t, sorry. Wish that I had made up plans. This was more of an idea that I had and drew out on the back of a cocktail napkin one evening. Thanks for watching.

Late to the party. What are you measurements? All materials?
@MattWoodsComics Жыл бұрын
I made these a few years ago and lost the cut list I wrote up. If memory serves me right. Just took the size of a golden age comic book and made the measurements to accommodate them with extra room. Honestly, this was the kind of project that I drew out on a piece of scrap paper.

I pull up the (VERY) rough estimate of this costing $4,000 to build, given a single plywood sheet nowadays is $80 each

The price of lumber is really high right now. Now I don’t remember exactly what these cost but I think that one cabinet was close to $100 at the time. Each cabinet hold four drawers and around 1000 comics. The full extension drawer slides were the largest expense at the time. Each cabinet was made out of one full sheet of 3/4 plywood. 1 full sheet of 1/2 MDF board. 1 18x24 inch sheet of plexiglas. Drawer Handles, and drawer slides. Price of material is a lot higher now. No way to make it for $100 now.

@@MattWoodsComics Sorry - wasn't meant to come across as rude. Trying to give constructive feedback. The constant movement of the camera, zooming in and out wasn't the best. Otherwise, really enjoyed the video - thank you.

@@raedjibrail you were speaking the truth. Not rude at all. My cameraman is my son. He was 13 years old when we made this video. It was very shaky. This was one of the very first videos that was posted on the channel. We have learned so much about filming videos since we started. If fact constructive critiques like yours are needed. We take those comments and learn. Your comment is appreciated. Thank you

Change your sense of manners. How you communicate is rude and annoying. Also, work on you grammar and sentence structure.
