I just do not get tired with those videos. I use to read comics while at school. Now I'm being schooled about comics. Life does get better all the time.

The Fantastic Four was like a revival/teamup of four Golden Age characters: Plastic Man, Human Torch, The Heap and Invisible Scarlet O'Neil.

Alex 😃 Fascinating to learn about potential roots of Marvel characters!👍 It makes me think that the future may contain many superheroes that are further improved, based upon past characters.

Enjoying this series a lot. I'm a silver age baby: bought both the first Giant Superman Annual and Spiderman #1 off the newsstand and (shudder) left Giant-Size X-Men #1 in the laundromat after I finished reading it. BTW, the plural of "Hero" is "Heroes" according to Webster and the apostrophe police. :)

Droom was retconned to Druid because "Droom" sounded too similar to "Doom". Then later Druid's origin was retconned to have taken place in Kamar-Taj (disguised by illusion), and the dying lama was retconned into Yao (also disguised by illusion). What the illusions were for when Druid had never seen Kamar-Taj before and would never see Yao physically again... beats me. Can't have been to prevent Druid from tipping off Strange, because they didn't even know each other until after they became spell-chuckers. And it can't be to prevent them from knowing they have a connection in their origins because knowing that connection is there saves Strange (and Clea) in his _Infinity Gauntlet_ tie-in.

The Green Lama also had a radio show based on the pulp. The Green Lama of the 1940's comics unlike the other versions could fly etc.

Actually Daredevil was overshadowed by the little wise guys, his junior sidekicks, who grew in popularity during the 1950s with stories derived from social issues of the day. Daredevil was occasionally involved in the storylines then not at all, his absence was due to the fact that he returned to his civilian identity and if I remember correctly joined the Air Force. Interestingly Stan Lee in his origins of Marvel heroes book states that he got the name Daredevil from a childhood expression. Doubtful because Martin Goodman, Stans father in law and boss always checked out the newsstands for the latest successes that he could adapt for his company and during the 1950s Lev Gleason and Charles Biros Daredevil, Crimebuster and Crime Does Not Pay publications were popular books. So Stan knew about the Daredevil character and recreated him for the Marvel Age of Comics. A fact Stan neglected to mention in his book.

Due to a death in my family, I now have a large collection of comics. We don't know what to do with them. Tulsa area offers no help with older comics. Any suggestions finding a comic historian?

Very interesting. You could also add Magazine Enterprise's Ghost Rider and Harvey's Black Cat (although Marvel's Black Cat isn't always a hero). Come to think of it, you might also add Holyoke's Cat-Man compared to DC's modern Batman villain turned hero, Catman. And Marvel's golden age and modern versions of Black Widow.

Pulp magazine character The Spider in 1933, has movie serial The Spider's Web in 1938, after that but before Tarantula was Claire Voyant the Black Widow by Timely comic co. That later became Marvel comic co.

Who was first Quicksilver or the Whizzer ?
@hydrolito5 жыл бұрын
Mercury from Roman mythology is also called Quicksilver. However Marvel's Whizzer came before Marvel's Quick Silver and in some stories they said he was his father.

Why do you question Captain Marvel copying Superman, when some of those who worked on him admitted in court they were told to copy Superman? Furthermore many of the covers were lifted straight from Action comics. As to Iron Man, he owes a lot to a famous Golden Age hero, Batman. Both are philanthropic, billionaire playboys who own a multi billion dollar empire. They got their inheritance, including a Gothic Mansion complete with English butler, when their parents were killed under suspicious circumstances. Using their wealth, skills and brains they created gadgets to help them fight crime and despite having no superpowers regularly best those who did. Both were founder members of their respective Premier Superhero group and helped fund and equip it. I also feel the Golden Age Metalo influenced Iron Man. His grey armour resembled Iron Man's first suit ( and with the Green cloak Doom too) and both of them required artificial means to keep their hearts going. Dr. Occult also inspired Dr. Fate and Dr. Strange, with his magical amulet and ability to fly, the first superhero to do so. Whilst Tarantula undoubtedly influenced Spider-man, Spider Queen did also as she was even older. Her use of web firing bracelets is far too similar to Spideys not to be. Interestingly, Kirby's original sketch of Spider-man looked almost identical to Tarantula and even had his web firing gun. Surprised The Shield was not mentioned as Captain America is a blatant rip off which led to an out of court settlement. Both are supersoldiers wearing patriotic costumes who got their powers via a serum and Ray's. Both used a shield for protection. I realise this is a short video, but you could do a whole series on Marvel copying Golden Age heroes.

The very first Electro was a remote controlled robot with a view screen like the Spider Slayer robots first two models but sometimes someone was inside like Ironman! MLJ did Timely a favor when they made Captain America change his shield for the round one that he could throw and ricochet all over the place! And all because the Shield's costume looked like a triangular shield! They later had the Shield lose his super strength and get a kid partner so the original ended up copying the imitation! As we now know they hoped to get Simon and Kirby to leave Timely and join MLJ but succeeded only in the first part!

I think it is sort of ridiculous how they have to change the characters. It seem like there will a guarantee of ten of each movie as we switch out the character so they are a different race, gender, or whatever. Silly

Did the Nazis and Italian fascists create any comic superheroes? Mussolini based some of his mannerisms on the Italian strongman Machiste and the Nazis used Wotan. Did they make comic book propaganda?
@NIDELLANEUM5 жыл бұрын
There was an Italian superhero. Dick Fulmine was an Italian American cop with super strenght. Obviously, being 1938 (a few months before Superman) Italy, those comics were heavily fascist.

Since Toho's favorite character was Superman I was always surprised that Japan didn't do this kind of thing in WW2! Machiste started out in a silent film made in the 1920's that looked like it was set then as well! Later he was made into a sword and sandal type!
