When I started studying fantasy art, I realized quickly that there is a huge red line between "before Frazetta" and "After Frazetta". When he started painting covers there was nothing that looked like him, and after it was ALL influenced by him. And now, even 50 years later, Fantasy art is either influence by his design ideas and techniques OR sort of "anti-influenced", where the artists have to make a conscious choice to avoid his influence. That is the mark of a giant.
@patrickmcevoy5080 Жыл бұрын
@@davedfw814 I think you missed my point, while actually repeating it in your reply. My point was that an AD or artist has to make a conscious decision to AVOID tropes that Frazetta created, because they are so influential. And that's what you're saying too, I think.

My late husband (also an artist and from Brooklyn) took me to the Frazetta Museum back in 2009, while Frank and Elanor were still alive. I was shocked at how small the paintings actually are, considering how huge and dynamic the subjects are. I saw a painting that I had never seen before and was so in love with it, that I bought a print of it, that hangs in my living room today. Here is the painting: frankfrazetta.net/Serpent.html What caught my eye was the details in the bubbles, they looked real enough to pop them.
@AllenFreemanMediaGuru10 ай бұрын
I visited the Frazetta museum in 2021. Frank Jr and his wife were there running it. I was surprised how small the museum is with the paintings jammed together. I also visited the Norman Rockwell museum which was 20x larger and looked like a major museum.

I went looking for Greater Creators when it first came out, only to discover to my great chagrin that it is only available to those who live in the US. The rest of us are simply out of luck. The episode I most wanted to watch was that of Frank Frazetta, the artist who defined the covers of the novels I was reading throughout my childhood. No single visual artist has had as much impact on me. To this day, I find his work utterly unmatched.

As a Frazetta fan for many many years now, I approve of this episode. I'm an illustrator myself. And Frank is and always has been a huge inspiration. Thank you for enlightening the masses. ;) Although, If you are not already aware, the Death Dealer image also became the mascot and full size statue for "III Corps" Also known as the "Phantom Warriors." Yes the Fantasy genre was dominated by two names, Frazetta and Boris. Frazetta had the rougher, earthier style but so dynamic as to take on an inner life. Boris's work was technical perfection although the majority of his work was taken from posed photographs and lacked Frazetta's energy his rendering skills were beautiful. It really was brain vs brawn, personally I can't go one over the other, I love the power of Frank's work but some of Boris's work is so sublime it just takes my breath away.

What always blew me away was how FAST he banged out those paintings. He would recieve a deadline and sit on it until the night before it came due. He would then pull an all nighter and knock out a full masterpiece in hours.

When one of Frazetta's most iconic illustrations, the Cover Art for "Conan the Adventurer" was used in the first modern collection of Howard's short stories, after the book came out the painting was returned to Frazetta. A friend pointed out "This guy doesn't have a neck!" To his friend's horror, Frazetta scraped the head off the original painting and reworked it so there was enough of a neck to make it more realistic (if you can call any Frazetta painting realistic...they're all supermen.)

Well welcome to the party... better late than never... been a fan since 1965... read my first Conan the Barberian novel by Robert E Howard and was totally impressed with the cover art. It was way tougher to find out about artists back then (I was just 7 going on eight then) but as luck would have it, the local book store had more Conan books and over a few weeks I got all they had. It would be years later when I was in Highschool (1972-76) that I found a whole book of Frazzetta art... what a inspiration for a young artist.
