As a man I can admit I get teary eyed when I think of Ripley going after Newt exactly for the reasons you stated. This is a woman who lost everything from these Aliens and finally says "No more!" and puts her life on the line and ventures into hell to save her daughter. If that ain't true love I don't know what is.

Sincere. I just did a little reading, and some also want to give actor Lance Henriksen this distinction ... but I think that one is somewhat tainted by crossover, since his AvP character is supposed to be the human model for android Bishop. Paxton's three roles are just so random!

Bishop's role was a contrast to the android in Alien. The android in Alien went bad and sabotaged the mission. Bishop was a redemption - it was a way of telling Ripley - hey, machines can be your friend too. Technology is not the enemy here.

Aliens get the academy award for the best Double Ending Jump Scare cliche. It work because they obeyed the first rule of using a cliche, making it so fucking cool that once your audience sees it in action they say 'cliche-smiche, that shit was awesome!'. Thanks for doing justice to my favorite movie of all time. It's great to see someone else geek out over all the same oh-so-very-perfect moments. The only thing that I missed was the "battle of the two mothers" connection - how Ripley and the queen understand and relate to each other as mothers, first and foremost, and how they use that relationship to manipulate and attack each other. But that's a minor point, and easy to overlook with you working that dress (da-AYUM!). Great video. XD

It's so awesome to watch someone who clearly has so much love for this movie paying tribute to what is one of the true scifi greats! You're right about the powerloader, it was operated by a bodybuilder inside the loader, essentially hugging Sigourney. Also the sub level 3 set was adopted and used in Tim Burton's Batman as the set for Axis Chemicals. Oh yeh and the photo of Ripley's daughter is actually Sigourney's mother. I'm sure I have more trivia on this movie but it's not coming to mind right now. You rock CBG19!

Ripley has the toughest subjective week. Her whole crew are murdered by a horrific alien creature, she wakes up the next day(from her perspective) to be told everyone she knows is dead and you're fired. Goes back for round 2 with the aliens and it's much worse, they're everywhere and they kill everybody. Back in the fridge to wake up to yet another alien horror show in a prison full of potential rapists. Holy crap.

Such a great review, and actually pretty rare these days to see someone giving this movie its due, over Alien 3. I loved how Alien 3 broke new ground with composite effects and animatronics, yet I hate that it threw everything else that had been built so perfectly in the first two movies, out the window. Everyone wants to defend it, but it just feels so wrong that the makers of that movie felt the need to do that, in my humble opinion.

It's a valuable scene. It shows them starting off confident an d getting more and more scared as the ammo runs down, then momentarily relieved when the aliens stop. I was so thrilled when I saw this review. CBG19 reviewing Aliens! Hands down one of my favorite movies from my childhood and adolescent years. This movie made me so afraid of the xenomorph that I would often have nightmares (the last one being like 2 or 3 years ago) about being chased through my neighborhood or some abandoned skyscraper by a xenomorph(s). I would wake up scared shitless. But the great thing was that in the morning when I would recall the dream I would be like "Damn that was a kick ass dream!". I began to look forward to those dreams. Love the xenomorph! I truly believe this movie would still easily stand up to any of the CGI movies of today without appearing that its just to out of date. The way James Cameron is able to use suspense to such a high degree is phenomenal. The hand held tracking motion detector thing was perfect. Bill Paxton was great in this movie. He was definitely one of those type of characters that could of easily ruined a movie with just too much goofy type of comedy. But luckily it worked out great. I actually had one of the Alien toys back in the day. The one where the teeth would actually pop out of its mouth. Of course it was played with and eventually broken and thrown away. I would give my left nut to have that toy again, unused, still in the package.

I really appreciate that the power loader sequence features literally no music for most of it. It keeps the attention on the action and lets it be intense. Too often, the sound design and musical cues tell us how we're supposed to feel without using expert visuals - like a cinematic band aid, but here the focus is all about Ripley taking on the Queen, and using just the sound design without musical score was a genius way to do it.

Hollywood is becoming desperate for money. They have been doing more and more movies, trying to stay relevant. Agreed. Hicks is a major character in that he is the father figure opposite to Ripley's mother figure. He backs her play when it is the right move and yet keeps a level head when she is overcome with emotion. The scene in which they are trying to cut through the floor to rescue Newt and are too late is a perfect example of this dichotomy.

Ripley is a good heroine because she acts like a normal person and she isnt a super hero she is in a horrible situation and instead of curling into a ball and dying she decides to stay alive and cares for the people around her. She evolved from the first movie where she was a space trucker who barely survived a horrible monster to someone who dosen't care if her life is in danger when she finds out that an entire colony is in danger on LV421 and wants to save them. She is defined by her ability to overcome fear and her want to protect others from harm. The marines don't have hubris (its only Hudson who is like that) they thought it would just be a few aliens all the characters where completely lied too. All the actors do a great job by acting like humans and not characters the marines are macho sure but they're marines they act like normal people though and it feels like this group of marines is like a family. They're likable you don't want them to die.

This is nuts. I just watched this last week with all the extras and commentary. Although Aliens is probably the most iconic sifi film of last century, i personally think aliens three is greatly under appreciated, after all they took the franchise from xenomorph whooping space marines, to monk cons with nothing more than fire and a sharp stick, a complete juxtaposition ..another whoop whoop, lets kick ass would have been same old, same old.
@zedek_10 жыл бұрын
That's fair enough, and I do agree it's a good film... _BUT_ I fucking hate how they just threw away all the survivors from the previous film (except Bishop's brief cameo). I suspect that's one of the biggest hurdles this film had to clear because it totally destroyed the fans, and on top of that it felt like a repeat of the first film.
@Alienalloy10 жыл бұрын
Fair points, although i think a little child death gave it some gravitas, plus in the big extended directors, all the bits he liked but made it twice as long for no reason cut.. Riply is washed a shore alone on a beach after the escape pod is seen crash landing in an alien sea, plus iv always wondered why in the future 99% of all criminals will be for some unexplainable reason, British?
@CT6810 жыл бұрын
Agreed. In the first three, Alien was a sci-fi horror, Aliens was sci-fi action, and Alien 3 was sci-fi art film. Alien 4 was just crap, though.
@yourmomsstalk3r10 жыл бұрын
Alien 3 had lots of potential. The extended cut is a very interesting piece of work. Had the studio given Fincher more headroom, this could have easily been a great film, possibly the best of series. That said, it still has its share of problems, namely the one you mention: it's willingness to so casually kill off the surviving characters within minutes of the film's opening. I still don't understand what they were thinking.

Loved your review. I was there in 1986 to see this in the theater. A few notes: 1. Any mention of Ripley's daughter was not in the theatrical release 2. Ripley demoing the power suit most definitely was 3. You mention she 'went back for the cat' in Alien (1980). She didn't. In fact, when the alien blocked her escape to the shuttle, she dropped the cat (in his box) and ran back to stop the engines from exploding. Of course, she took the cat with her when she ran back to the shuttle, but his (Jones) box was just lying there. I'm heartbroken you didn't mention the fantastic dialogue. The whole "Let's take off and nuke the site from orbit" is one of my favorite dialogues in any film or book. You can just see that was written by a gamer. How many times in games, especially first-person shooters, did we say "wait, why exactly am I going alone into this alien/demon infested caves/ruins? Why not just nuke the site from orbit?" But that's just me. Please don't think I didn't enjoy your review. I gave it a "thumbs up" and shared it to FB. I had to wait until i was relaxed enough to move! Which was an issue when i shouldn't have been there! :) The powerloader battle is a mixture of fully sized props and miniatures. The full sized prop did indeed require an extra person in the back to assist with the movement of the thing!

My favorite was "Let's Rock!" by Vasquez.. But Bill Paxton.. "Game Over Man, Game Over!" is scifi legend. You can play any game or be in any situation and say "Game over man! and everyone immediately knows what you are talking about... I bet people see him places and go up to him and say Game Over Man, Game Over until he is tired of hearing it. And how this never once ended up in your review is "reviewer malpractice" hahaha.. to coin a new phrase..

Ok, I really love Aliens, but Alien has a beautiful set design and this incredible creepy slowness. Aliens is very much an action film with horror elements, and I prefer the straight up horror.

CrystalJupiter The amazing techniques that Cameron used to make Aliens such a timeless, kick ass action film far exceed the dated techniques Ridley Scott used to make his haunted house in space movie.

Excellent review. Honestly Comic Book Girl 19, I feel like you're my other half when it comes to movie reviews! I love James Cameron's Aliens. Spot on with the review.

You can definitely see the creators of Halo were influenced by Aliens.

+Ze KCT The whole idea of a "space marine" was copied from this movie, so you can include "Doom" as well.

Vasquez, Michelle Rodriguez mom, it has to be. And I don't think she's having sweaty manly sex with any of those guys.

Whether they were banging or not Drake was her man. She was ready to charge back into hell just for the possibility that she might be able to drag him back into the APC.

basquat76 I don't know how many masculine women you know, and maybe I'm just reading too much into it, but that's kind of how they tend to treat the guys they love. When you're dealing with people that defy traditional gender roles be they men or women they don't follow typical patterns for affection. You never had a girl kick you in the balls in elementary school and later ask you out? Or play video games and NEED to win or else they act like you've just cheated on them? I don't know...I'm attracted to tomboys and I have a bit of experience with the quirks they tend to share. That slap in the face she gives him for instance...that's practically a kiss to someone like her. Again, maybe CBG19 and I are just reading into it too much. Only Vasquez, Drake, and James Cameron know.

basquat76 I was with you on the possibility that it was just a brother/sister dynamic, but no...there's absolutely no evidence that she was a lesbian. Especially considering there were a ton of other women on board and she chose to be attached at the hip with Drake.

Creativematrix1 But it has nothing to do with real life. Just because you have met straight women who's similar to this character doesn't change the movie stereotype that she is.

I think her point was that casting is more based on looks these days rather than casting someone who is more believable for the role.

It happens, yeah, it's just that it happens a little too often in Hollywood, so it becomes boring and expected and trivial and unimpressive. That's what makes instances like Ripley so much more interesting, so much more dynamic.

cory75FI Eyes are too close together, face too long, lips too thin, nose too big.. beauty is subjective, but by majority opinion she's not exactly beautiful. Majority opinion is all you have to go on when it comes to beauty, because if you don't you might as well call anyone beautiful, which leaves the word meaningless.

Aliens is one of my all time favorite movies and always will be. I saw it under the best possible circumstances: as a Marine stationed in Okinawa, in the base theater with a theater full of Marines! Nothing will ever duplicate that experience. We got the biggest kick out of Hudson and the 1st Sergeant. Really authentic feeling with their interactions.

Some points, she mentioned in here, are found only in DVD Special Edition. Ex: 2:34 Ripley looking at her mother's pic. This was not in the screen in 1986. NOTE: The woman is Weaver's mother!

"Nuke it from orbit, it's the only way to be sure", fave movie of all time. Trivia and stuff. Did you know the Sulaco (Colonial Marine ship) was only painted on one side due to budgetary constraints? CBG19, do you do video game reviews? If so, how about a review for Aliens: Colonial Marines and Alien Isolation. ACM was considered a flop, but was also declared canon. Alien Iso was considred a better game, and only saw the light of day because it was already greenlit and in production by the time ACM released. I'd like to hear your commentary and opinions on both!!!
