Let's not be too general. Bendis was awesome at street level heroes. But he started to suck when he started doing big team books and doing events. His runs on daredevil and ultimate spiderman were excellent. Powers is awesome too. It's unfortunate that when he moved to DC they gave him superman... Its the worst thing bendis could have done.

The Superman thing really hurt me when it happened. Superman had always been a superhero that went over my head and I barely read his comics. But that run with Jon really got to me, really inspired me to see why others liked Superman so much, and I started to consume other stories that people recommended to me. That single run completely changed how I viewed a character, to the point of making him one of my favorites, and seeing it all thrown away really put me off DC for a while.

Same, but it cuts even deeper for me since it helped me connect with my own father(not that we weren't connected before but). He had been a diehard superman fan his whole life and I just couldn't understand. Everything I had seen of him he was boring or mishandled. Then I read Tomasi's superman and everything my dad said about why he loved superman clicked. So to see it ripped away because of some pompous golden boy they tried so desperately to appease, simply because he was such a big name at marvel disgusts me. Especially since the father son relationship wasn't thrown away for anything interesting, instead just because he was too lazy to learn how to write a child character.

Mystery solving would be so much cooler especially having her be young and optimistic about stuff. Instead of a world of super powered people it's more just futuristic tech like and have her parents as either journalists or detectives who were trying to take someone high up in power down, they get gunned down and she gets dropped on earth to protect her. So you can have her solving where she comes from and why she's adopted in the beginning. Heck then you could make her a detective and insert her more naturally into crossovers.

If I learned anything from Bendis's prior work on solo heroes he's created, they have a ton of angst, and initially generic superpowers, without a real superhero name they used to/never had (Powers, Jessica Jones, and Naomi). I thought it was about a girl who lived in DC universe and learned how to succeed, then it turns out she's a Superman type being who's now every where. I know some close friends who love this story, and the way it's been presented, it never hooked me, like her name and cover say one thing, but inside says another. Haven't seen the show, but from what I've heard, it's just the comic, but with some changes.

As being of someone of color and enjoying various publications of both Comics, TV shows, and anime I can completely understand the means of what happens when people try to rush productions on ideas to create diverse concepts to widen the spread of popularity for them, and I completely agree with you, to develop a character especially of one of color you have to slowly progress to that position of fandom, otherwise you do actually end up with a very flimsy overpowered perspective that doesn't match the overall aesthetic, Naomi is basically another attempt and example of what Marvel tried to do with Miss America aka America Chavez in her comic book debut, which by the way was so bad it got canceled after just like three issues, she's overpowered made of ethnicity and has no true ark to her name yet she is posted out to be the most powerful of them all and apparently is put front and center for the public to see just to be accepted right away, and if you deny her you are then judge because they think you don't like her simply because she's of ethnicity, I am no fan of that type of writing and definitely don't like it when they force diversity, just because it's a thing that everyone else is doing. if you want diversity do it right or don't do it at all, that's all I have to say on the matter.

Not going to lie, when I saw America Chavez's backstory in Marvel Rising, I was like "Wait, this is almost the same as KalAOL's backstory in Marville (which itself was meant to be a satire of Superman's backstory) except her home world actually _was_ destroyed, she's from another universe instead of the future and her parents are a lesbian couple" On a side note, I didn't care much for Riri Williams in those films but Spider-Gwen (I'm not calling her Ghost-Spider when Miles gets to keep Spider-Man but she can't be Spider-Woman), Squirrel Girl and Kamala Khan are easily among my favorites. Hopefully the MCU Ironheart show will change my mind about Riri.

I suspect the blandness is semi by design. It gives the show room to take her random directions without it being called out of character and all her powers are probably very budget friendly and fit in with pre-made effect from there other shows. The other characters you mentioned require creativity and budget because most of them don’t live in standard towns with standardised powers. Even popular shows like the flash have terrible CGI when they try an effect that will only be used one time and don’t let the MANY speedsters think to far out of the box that often.

The key to improving diversity is placing an emphasis of having actually GOOD characters. A prime example is something like Arcane which is diverse as fuck but is primarily celebrated for having good characters. @@gregcourtney751 Events like Civil War II, aside from it clearly commissioned because the MCU was adapting the original storyline, are why Bendis should not be doing events. Those aren’t his forte. There’s a glaring continuity error in the situation where Bruce Hulks out because at that point in Totally Awesome Hulk it was shown Bruce wasn’t able to transform anymore. He’d put in effort to put himself in life threatening situations just to bring out the big guy and no Hulk. The whole plot is the characters shedding brain cells to make it happen, Captain Marvel playing into self-fulfilling prophecy and ignoring evidence she’s being played. Tony even gets put to the sideline at the end so Riri can take spotlight as Ironheart. The thing is to write amazing and relatable characters they have to go through a proper heroes journey and struggle along the way. Lately a lot of writers and creators seem to want to skip these steps when making these new characters that if written properly could be iconic and amazing if put through the proper hurdles.

I actually had the same problem when I first read moon girl and devil dinosaur. They just explain that this random pre-teen is the most intelligent person in the world without any explanation or mention of her before. I will say that a super genius that is best friends with a ginormous Dino that swaps bodies with her is a very fun idea and can make so many fun stories, but moon girl is so boring as a character that it removes all the fun in that idea. Also, she doesn’t really have a fun personality, acts like an adult to everyone, hates everyone except for devil Dino and never really has any difficulties in anything (that I remember). I really hope that the new Disney show is gonna fix all of that and it looks like that they are! TL;DR: you need a good character to make a good story. If it’s a bland character, it’s really hard to make a good story.

As someone who enjoys a lot of Bendis' work, I feel like his time at DC may be some of his worst work yet. I still definitley enjoy a lot of his stuff, but man it definitley feels like everythng that DC does is now directly tied to Bendis and his ideas and it kinda just gets in the way of what was already there. Goes to show that Black female characters and their stories have to be exceptionally amazing to earn their approval amongst the comic geeks. And I know that's the elephant in the room being danced around, but I'm Black, so I don't have that option. Like, dude actually called her powers "generic". Guess why they're generic? Decades of them being given to cishet white male characters. He goes to compare her to other Black characters--with varying powers and backstories mind you, one being a male, Black being their only denominator--and lists which Black characters he'd prefer to see instead. We're a monolith apparently. They can have all. We have to choose between one or the other. Why more than one Black superhero when you can have three Spider-Men named Peter Parker in the same film?

They need to develop her more, that is a certainty. I never read her original series, but it does sound rather generic, the way you describe it. My only real exposure to her was the recent Justice League run, where everyone was more quippy, and she did bugger all. Seriously, I understand Bendis wants Naomi's name to be out there, but for god's sake, have her actually do something! His run so far has had her in it ... And that's about it. Granted, my local comics shop is behind on DC comics (thanks to their idiotic idea of switching distribution) and only have rea dup to issue 68, so I have no idea if it's improved since, but you'd think he'd have her do something or noticeably grow a little after ten issues of her being in it.

I know B.M.B. was only the first domino in the cascade of problems company wide, but in my opinion DC never fully recovered from B.M.B. landing with a thud, erasing our super family, and years of super sons (and any possibility of making Damian likable). As a black person myself, it's nice seeing diversity in comics and seeing a lot more colored superheroes but at the same time if you want to put more diversity into your comics make them good characters. I feel like barely any effort is put into some of these newer characters like Naomi. They give them a generic story, generic powers, with not very thought out ideas. I feel like they just put these colored characters in comic books just for the diversity, They put them out for the sake of it, without any sort of build up of that character and no good stories to make them memorable. It's just "here's a character that's black", that's it. Then again I'm thankful that I can see more characters that look like me but they have no effort into their characters. This doesn't it apply to Static, Vixen, Miles or any of those other popular black characters but to the newer ones that are coming out. It feels like they're putting them out just to put them out.

I'd never read anything from Brian Michael Bendis before the whole "Bendis is coming!" slogans started popping up, since I was a relative newcommer to comics and was only reason DC at the time. I gave the Naomi books a shot, was enjoying them well enough... then I don't know which came first but a few of these things made me really dislike what Bendis was doing. First the lesser one: Batman being uncharacteristically un-batman, i.e. skeptical, untrusting and proding, around an unknown sudden power house. Maybe Bruce was just tired of treating kids like dirt, or I don't know, but it felt out of character for him to be so amicable, and while the art of that issue's cover was most likely a joke, I don't think it helped perception. Second is definitely Young Justice: I felt like it threw too many new things at me and simultaneaously bored me to tears. Dropped the book pretty early on, at around when they left the Gem dimension. Third would be how Naomi pretty much manhandled the evil guy from the portal with relative ease. That deflated any real interest in the book and future series including her. And the biggest one was how he aged up Jon into being a teenager. Not only did it throw away any potential stories like a Human/Kryptonian hybrid growing up in the shadow of his father, as you mentioned in the video, but it killed his relationship with Damien, which was something I *LOVED* wholeheartedly. I was so new to the comic book industry that I hadn't had any firm roots in it, and this managed to completely uproot me from comic books in general, as I expected to sooner or later encounter one of those typically mentioned "terrible things the industry did to my favorite books" situations, but I never expected to encounter it so quickly. Now I just perruse comic book youtube channels, the very same channels that got me into comics in the first place, just to see what's been going on lately. Sadly, not much has gotten me excited enough to give it another go.

Tbh honest with you that's fine but they at least need a decent backstory. C'mon her back story is so generic. I guess the only reason why this got pushed is because of the writer behind it. So basically Bendis just creates new overpowered characters for the sake of ethnicity and fattening his wallet, while its up to other people to actually write them with a personality and a purpose once Bendis moves on?
@Anyone690
@Anyone690 2 жыл бұрын
Honestly it’s noble that Bendis wants to make characters that his children can relate to..that’s all well and good. But simply making a character without making them compelling for the sole sake of their existence is really lazy. For example. Miles Morales. Fantastic character one of my favorite heroes to come out of marvel especially since he has taken a Dick Grayson-like role to Peter Parker and the marvel universe as a whole is really great. His origin story wasn’t forced but took advantage of an opportunity for a new character to come and develop in their own right. A character who has flaws who is relatable who comes from a good home (both his parents know about him being spiderman and he is the son of a cop and nurse v cute). Contrast that with someone like Riri Williams who is basically Ray “Skywalker” (🤢). Making a girl a Mary Sue is never going to work because we like characters that we can relate to because they can inspire us as we see ourselves in them. Even tho I am a white dude I can see myself in miles because he deals with the same stuff I had growing up as a teenager. Not even Wonder Woman is a Mary Sue if you think about it because she usually is portrayed as a fish out of water type that many women that I kno can relate to from their own experiences. Making someone completely flawless does not interest anyone

@@Anyone690 Peter can be really unlikably arrogant at times. A lot of that was to do with Ditko tbf, but that character trait never sat well with me. With Miles, I feel that he has a lot to live to, even more than Peter. Why? Because his parents have occupations that make them freaking role models. Doesn't matter how smart he is, if he can't put peoples needs ahead of his own, he'll never live up to the example set by his parents. He also has to, continuity dependent I suppose, have to live up to being Spider-man. Kid is under a lot of pressure, and I feel I can relate to the weight of expectation.

As a teenage African American girl myself I loved reading Naomi it had a YA feel and she seemed cool I don’t think every character had a great first appearance it takes time to build a character in the comic industry with so many different authors playing hot potato with the characters and as for her being over powered I love it an extremely powerful black girl is definitely my cup of tea but I get why others would feel the way they feel about it at the end of the day I just want her to become a solid character in the comic universe that little girls can see and obsess over

yea ao far from what I hear from him, the comic sounds good enough actually. I think people are hating the flood of representation ao they choose to pretend everything is about FORCING. I'd say a lot is but this sounds like, if it was made back in the 90s, it would just be another character that would sound great

all CW shows sucks anyway when DC is going to make a TV show with a proper budget like Marvel is doing?

Never, they love that CW cheap because they gotta away with it on Smallville for like a decade. Then Arrow did decently Flash was alright. The rest were there, honestly, CW has too many Superhero shows to the point I don't want to watch any of them now. Give me some one off DCAU movie and I'm fine.

They're doin it right now, it's called Peacemaker on HBO max. I think the HBO Max show are going to try to rival the MCU D+ shows a bit. They obviously don't have the same budget to throw at it but they get by okay and Peacemaker's actually loads of fun in the James Gunn kinda way.

I'm so glad you mentioned Vixen!! Mari has been one of my faves (As u can tell me name is mari lol) but she grew on me and slowly became my favorite DC superhero ever. She's done wonders in terms of black (women) representation, and being a solid amazing role model for black girls. She has an amazing skill set, a dope backstory, and her powers are amazing in terms of concept and execution. It sucks how she got screwed over by the CW having her have her own animated show that lasts 5-6 minutes per episode (barely, because the extra 2 minutes are used for the credits) and a season run time being less minutes than the average DC CW show like Flash, Supergirl, Arrow etc. It was amazing how they got her live action but we never saw her again afterwards, only briefly mentioned a few times in legends of tomorrow. I feel like having a live action Vixen series with the same run time as other DC shows would have been a better option.
