Partially because they were basically being shoved down my throat in the hopes I'd like them better than the X-men, which I grew up with. Honestly the distraction ploy was so transparent I coudve used it as a window. In AoS, though, they were interesting, they were (compatibly) believable. Honestly, the more hindsight I have for this series, the more angry I get at it as a whole. Even though they wrote themselves to be continued, they burned way too quick through all their characters, killing off many. It was obnoxious especially as all the characters and their abilities were underused in the first place. It was trash but it had potential. I think they could reboot them in a FF movie as the antagonists turned allies by the end, or they could do a Disney+ show... but no more shoestring budget junk! But even so, this show had a pretty big budget, it just seemed like heads were taking a big paycheck out of it rather than investing it into the show!
@CaptainPikeachu4 жыл бұрын
The problem of this show was that it was made by people who didn't understand the Inhumans and didn't really care to tell the story in the writing. Agents of SHIELD operates on a shoestring budget too, but they got writers who genuinely care about the story and they have made it work for 7 seasons to the point that Agents of SHIELD is the highest rated MCU TV show on Rotten Tomatoes. If the Inhumans story had been given to the Agents of SHIELD writers, there's no doubt in my mind even with the low budget, those writers would have made it work. The Inhumans is the victim of bad writing, bad business decisions, and little care for the product, the only people who seemed to actually care are the actors who desperately tried to imbue ethos into their characters and elevate the horribly stale dialogue, if nothing else, this cast deserves a second chance.

See, at the start of the series Maximus was easily one of the best villains of the entire MCU. He was clever, charming, relatable and had a very valid reason for wanting to achieve his goal. So while the whole "secretly looking for more power" thing was added later, it's pretty apparent it wasn't really part of his original goal and it was something that was simply added to the show once they realized just how much more likable he was than the actual protagonists, who are all a bunch of racist elitists. _And they don't change._ The proper way to handle things (and indeed, the one the whole setup of the show seemed to be building towards) would be to have the heroes learning humility by being forced to work alongside humans while showing the villain increasingly lose sight of his original goal once he takes a liking to the power and sees it threatened. Instead, the show has the "heroes" ocassionally make friends with one or two humans for personal reasons but still see themselves as superiors until the very end and showing no signs of intending to be better leaders to their own people, while the villain just out of the blue starts behaving like a caricature for no established reason (other than the aforementioned "making the heroes look better in comparison" deal). I still didn't hate the series either. There are a few good characters to root for here and there, and some fun interactions. Also, there are a few actors who definitely care for the characters and the story (did you know, for instance, that the actor who plays Black Bolt created his own full-fledged sign language for the character?). It's really a shame that it all was handled so poorly.

The thing is... that's actually how it is in the comics. The Inhuman royals are in no way likable. Medusa even started out as a supervillain. For the most part you were not suppose to like them. Inhumans was an American comic with a royal family in it. Americans in general do not like royals and can not relate to them. We just like to see them fall. The Inhumans as a faction were created to fall for entertainment. At some point that was forgotten.

He's literally called Maximus the Mad. In fact, this part of the show is actually lifted pretty directly from a comics storyline. It's entirely intentional and planned. The Royal Family... and Black Bolt in particular... have always been presented as pretty dodgy characters. Again, it's one of the reasons why the Inhumans property is nothing like the mutant one and never should have been forced to act as a substitute.
@harryeast954 жыл бұрын
@@raptor4840 No, they don't. Americans loathe monarchy as a political structure but treat the Elizabeth II and co. as an old money version of the Kardashians. And, in any case, obsession and hate aren't opposites at all.

As much as I like the MCU, I hate that Disney and Marvel Push those versions as the defininative version of the characters. I used to follow the behind the scenes of Inhumans years ago not because I was a fan but rather cuz of Ike Pearlmutter's push to have it replace X-Men. It was a complete disaster and I watched Inhumans crash & burn at the end of it. What's sad about it with the TV Show failing they actually screwed Inhumans' chance from reaching out to a more mainstream audience. Inhumans was never like the X-Men and should of never been treated as such. It already had its own identity and they should've stuck to making a movie with Vin Deisal like they had originally planned. Now it's unclear if the MCU would ever give them another shot. :/

If anyone is wondering, don't worry, Medusa got her hair back in the comics. It wasn't even cut. She briefly lost her powers, her hair fell out as a side effect (which at that point was probably a good thing since she'd otherwise be dragging a massive mound of dead hair), got her powers back later and her hair immediately grew back. I just find the idea that it can be cut at all kind of confusing. In the comics, it's been shown to be strong enough to carry her entire body weight by itself and, yeah, brought down a space ship. It's pretty strong. Surely then, it's strong enough to survive a pair of scissors? Admittedly, I never watched the show so I might be wrong. But those of you who did, was it genuinely just shaved off like traditional hair? If it was, that's got to be something unique to the show which just further demonstrates how underwhelming the powers were in that show.

A couple of thoughts on the Inhumans in general, keeping in mind that I really did enjoy the video: I think the Terrigen bomb was a really neat idea. The whole idea of taking something that is *usually* voluntary, and thrusting it upon people makes for really good storytelling. Without it, we wouldn't have gotten Ms. Marvel. One arc in her book tackles how different people react upon finding out they're Inhuman/Nuhuman. Is it their duty to help people in a very Spider-Man, power and responsibility sense? Are they better than humans? Do they deserve to be ruled by a royal family, or is that outdated? Medusa and Lockjaw play an important part in some of her early stories, and even Wolverine passes her name on to Medusa when he suspects she might be Inhuman after working with her (I feel Wolverine has often been a Mutant who is usually pretty chill with other super groups, depending on the story of course). I think the iteration of Secret Warriors with Ms. Marvel, Quake, Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur, Inferno, Karnak, and Magik was really good as well. It highlighted the tensions between Inhumans, humans, and Mutants. Magik served as a great ally despite being a mutant, and gained the trust of the other Secret Warriors, and there were both moments of cooperation and moments of conflict with the x-men. I think these tensions are exemplified by the Exiles character Khan. She mentions that the Inhuman colony in Jersey City is threatened equally by humans, mutants, and sentinels. And really, looking back on it, even in the late 60's there was still some element of the Inhumans not being accepted by humans. There was an issue of The Amazing Spider-Man where Medusa came down to Earth to see if humans were ready to accept her. Now, being a Silver Age Spider-Man story, of course 90% of the conflict was due to misunderstandings, but I think that kind of came with the territory at the time. But I thinks it makes sense why they would be feared as well. Just because terrigenesis is voluntary/planned, doesn't mean it's not an important part of their culture. And it's this aspect of their culture that gives them their immense powers, which are feared by the public. And that dynamic is something I think the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. show handled pretty well (and obviously The Inhumans didn't) sorry everyone for the kinda long comment, and also this is not in any way a direct criticism of Drake or the video, just a few thoughts in the defense of the Inhumans as a concept

Death of X really didn't help matters, either. I remember people being pretty pissed that they were replacing Mutants with Inhumans. The books (Including All New Inhumans) were good, but thanks to Marvel refusing to market these stories (and the screw up that was this show) All New Inhumans got cancelled. I got into these people thanks to channels like this talking about them, and the "Inhumanity" run of the Inhumans. It was cool, as was the Karnak solo run. I think Perlmutter REALLY upset some fans hardcore when Death of X happened. Any one else find it funny that Ms. Marvel books would have these small banners for the show on the second page?

Really there isn't a difference between mutants and inhumans other than how long they have been around and the trigger in question. I want to take the X-men's living island, have it crash and merge with the inhumans capital then teleport that into Camelot and sever the connection between Camelot and our realm. The story is going nowhere, mutants and inhumans are basically the same thing, and neither would stick out at all in a place so full of magic as Camelot.

Joey Tabora The issue there is that the Terrigen Bomb just made the Inhumans a blatant poor man’s Mutants due to how blatantly obvious it was and only took away what made the Inhumans unique and different from the Mutants. Yes Kamala is an Inhuman but that had little bearing over her character and really you could change her into a Mutant and nothing would really change. Seriously everything with the Terrigen Bomb has already been done by the Mutants in infinitely better execution. And the whole discrimination angle with the Inhumans is NOT a good idea for a variety of reasons. One of which you stated in that Terrigenesis is *VOLUNTARY*, keep in mind that they were meant to replace Mutants, who were applicable allegories for things like minority groups and LGBT people and you see the problem, they could CHOOSE to be normal people who wouldn’t be discriminated against which can not be applied to minorities who are discriminated against because of what skin color they were born as. And with alternative sexualities due to how Terrigenesis works if you tied that into being an allegory for gay people for example it would bring the implications that you were turned gay by outside forces, which would be very offensive to gay people. And if you didn’t want to be turned into a fish man you could just be like Karnak, an Inhuman who NEVER underwent Terrigenesis and has proven to be capable without it. And keep in mind that Terrigenesis can result in cases of body horror and power incontinence which would actually be THEIR fault because unlike the Mutants they choose to do this. So overall they simply don’t work in the role of marginalized groups.

WhiteRaven696 I did. The “heroes” enforce a brutal caste system where if you don’t get powers after Terrigenesis or do get powers but aren’t considered “good enough” you are forced into slave labor for life. What doesn’t help is that the Royal Family are extremely unlikable, for a key example here just look at how they treat Mordis, a Inhuman who was locked up for life simply for accidentally killing people after Terrigenesis, and trust me you WILL hate them after what you see. Overall the “heroes” were unlikable and the supposed “villains” were infinitely more likable and sympathetic. If you enjoy it, good for you, but as for me I see pretty clearly why this series failed: it’s because no one wanted to continue watching these characters at all.

The problem with this show was never the casting, this show had a great cast of actors that could have made for incredibly compelling TV, unfortunately the actors were saddled with horribly stale and boring dialogue, and writers who clearly didn't know what kind of story they needed to make. Characters were written all over the place, you can see the actors trying to desperately inject ethos into their characters and try to elevate the story, but they can only do so much. We could have gotten a political intrigue sort of show, yet they drop any pretense of that.

Definitely one of those "coulda, shoulda, woulda" sort of shows. You can see the pieces of a really good (if not totally predictable) story there. The characters weren't badly acted. You can see where some writers, at some point, were developing character arcs for each of the main characters and those arcs mostly play out in the show. But they're constantly hampered by the 1990s Cleopatra 2525 level production values. They're constantly hampered by their short season forcing them to speed up those arcs or even fast forward past key moments or character realizations. If Pearlmutter really wanted to make the Inhumans a Big Deal, he needed to give the show the budget and time it needed to really develop these very inhuman, but still very HUMAN characters into something unique, bizarre, and great. So you're left with a show that, with only a bit more budget and a couple more hours of episode, COULD HAVE been so much better than it was. What a show based on the complicated victim mentality/superiority complex at the heart of Atalan might be able to say into our culture where racism and bigotry are swift to fly on any side of the intersectional debate SHOULD HAVE made this one of the more important entries into the MCU. And if certain powers-that-be at Marvel weren't total cheapskates who are totally willing to sacrifice quality to save a couple of bucks, it WOULD HAVE been a much better show.

I wasn't even aware that the Inhuman's was ever released. I knew that it was originally suppose to be a movie which got pushed back multiple times. And then they introduced the Inhuman's in Marvel's Agent's of S.H.I.E.L.D. but they mostly introduced original characters that weren't based on anything from the comics because they were still saving Black Bolt, Medusa, and the other main characters from the comics for a future Inhumans title. I had seen set photo's where Medusa had her head shaved and assumed that her hair would just be fully CGI. I never saw the photo of her in the wig and wasn't aware they had actually shaved her head as part of the plot... which is really dumb and makes ZERO sense by the way cause her powers would make that impossible to ever do. 1. The only way anyone could shave her head is if she was unconscious while they were doing it otherwise they'd never be able to get close enough to do it. Having Medusa just sit there while someone shaves her head without fighting back doesn't make any sense. Did she forget that she can use her hair as a weapon to fight them off? 2. Even if someone could manage to shave her head it wouldn't render her powerless. Her power allows her to manipulate her hair, she can be see growing it out or shrinking it down at will any time she wants so because of her powers she could pretty much instantly grow it back whenever she felt like it. Anyway... I never heard about the series ever actually being released. After the set photos I heard there were more production production during filming that also delayed the release of that series and then nothing for years until I found this video just now. It maybe wouldn't have flopped if anyone even actually knew it existed in the first place. I mean it sounds terrible just from the Medusa nonsense but maybe if it had a wider audience who actually saw the series it still could have found a fan base. They pretty much killed it because the series was never promoted and it spent years in production hell so a lot of people, even if they knew it was being produced, like myself, thought it had never been officially released. This is the first I ever heard about it's release in a video that just showed up in my recommendations despite being 2 years old.

They would help humanity at times, but that was not their focus. The X-Men on the other hand were individuals, often discriminated against. At various times, their stories have been compared to racism and/or the gay experience. I enjoyed both sets of stories in the day, but I think I favored the Inhumans more. One point Drake should have added is now it is not the Inhumans trying to copy the X-Men, but the X-Men transitioning to the role the Inhumans played. Lately they wish to become an isolated race, often disinterested in humanity. I think it is a bad route to take, and Inhumans should have continued that role.

Honestly, I had never considered that the X-Men are now going the route of the Inhumans. It's a really interesting observation!

My biggest problem with this all was the writing. There was a huge case of 'villain has a point' going on, and even if the baddie wasn't entirely sincere in his liberation philosophy, the presence of the caste system made it impossible to root for the oppressors, I mean, the protagonists. If there was an RL instance of a royal family that supports a caste system being overthrown by the people oppressed by that system, I'd almost certainly be rooting for the revolutionaries, not the royals, assuming the new regime didn't mandate kicking puppies or other evil things.

The Inhumans was such a transparent attempt to replace the X Men, and im glad you gave the context from the comic books to drive that point home.

I personaly blame Perlmutter for nearly every bad decision made by Marvel during the 2010's.

I’m pretty late to this video, but I would love to see an Inhumans remake. It would be awesome if we got to see a better version of Medusas hair, especially with it being longer, and not cut off in the first episode, along with their comic looks, an accurate version of Crystals elemental manipulation, Block Bolt using his power to fly, and Triton actually being in the show more, rather than killing him off in the first episode.

I’m glad we can all go back to forgetting the Inhumans again.

Inhumans are reclusive people anyway.

Except for Ms Marvel. But luckily, most of her adventures have little to do with the other Inhumans anyway.... Oh and Lockjaw. We can never forget him.

Do y'all even know why you don't like these characters or are you just triggered x men fans?

Good video, but one fact was incorrect. After M-Day (where all but a few hundred mutants lost their powers due to the Scarlet Witch going nuts), Quicksilver and Unus the Untouchable broke into New Attilan to see if Terrigen could give them their powers back. Unus was the first to try, and died of M-Pox, the same illness that caused mutants to die in Inhumans vs. X-Men. Quicksilver was then arrested... by Medusa and Crystal. So the idea that Medusa didn't know Terrigen was lethal to mutants rings hollow.

Now I want a video on inhumans, the comic part was my actual favourite part of the video

Inhumans were better showcased in Agents of Shield, because not only was it a better show, it was giving them time to build, and flushing them out more. The Inhumans show it self, which honestly not bad, definitely tried to be a more formulaic paint by numbers show, instead of sticking more to its comic book roots, and it went too fast.

The one thing about this series that annoyed me was the nerfing of powers, especially Black Bolt ... his scream could destroy a city, but when he was tased by a cop, barely destroyed a cop car.
