Ahh, 'twas a grand conversation. I have reflected on it often and revised my thoughts on many of the ideas raised. It also forced me to challenge key assumptions and revise those too. For example can Conan be termed a kind of super hero? My answer has for a long time been a flat no, but on reflection I think a case might be made for it. It certainly bears further consideration!

WOW. Bard is so right about the Marvel movies. Almost all their villains are the mirror of the hero and meet the hero face to face. I never thought about it. I think the only example is Zemo in Civil War, but he's in the background and the majority of the movie is the fighting between the heroes. Very interesting

Well this is just a conversation between two people that just haven't talked in a while & I dig it. I really appreciate the Bard pointing out how DC doesn't need to establish their Universe/characters in films. I've been pitching that to people for a long while because you have characters that have existed for 80 years and have had a stake in the cultural zeitgeist for 30+ years. Marvel had that with Spider-Man & the X-Men, which Marvel Studios didn't own, so they needed to establish their Universe. It's why for me the first sign that DC Films have corrected themselves is the "Hey Aquaman! Can we get a selfie?" scene. Then there's all the merchandising in the Shazam trailers, it's a lived in thing akin to what's called "Dirty Space" in Sci-Fi and I really appreciate how that makes the films feel. Also just have to call out the irony of Sal mentioning John Carpenter's great scores, name dropping The Thing, then talking about Ennio Morricone and both missing that The Thing was scored by Morricone. The first (and I think only) Carpenter film not scored by Carpenter himself.

I have really started to dislike the "The hero causes villains" argument. Way to often it's a meta-observation that people take at face value, which kinda derails both conversations. In-universe, it's a crap shoot of weather the hero or the villain causes the other. For instance, in the films, both Cap. America & Batman comes to fruition in response to a greater threat. And in the comics, a lot of villains precedes the hero. Many of Thor's villains, for instance, are much older then him (by a wide margin). And then of course, there's many instances where the hero and villain comes about independent of each other, and only later clashes.

I am a big Conan fan and my first experience with Conan was the animated series and I still think it is amazing. One of the few series to have an actual ending and as a kid, honestly you don't even notice he is only tapping the baddies because your mind fills in the blanks. And the supporting villains are really good with decent back stories. His driven by avenging his family too...so I just feel there is alot of good Conan content in the series.

I've said it once and I'll say it again whenever the bard shows up I know I'm in for a good time! As for defining a super villain for me it boils down to gimmick, to be a true super villain you need to have a defining gimmick or motive that supercedes everything almost an obsession that in some way correlates to the hero either directly on opposition or through some means tied in to the heroes journey, it's the difference between deadshot who's becomes obsessive when he misses a shot and deathstroke who is ultimately just about business!

In terms of dragon ball, more recently they have been exploring the idea of having to challenge the heroes in ways that aren’t just using more powerful characters. Eventually they do get to that point but it doesn’t start out that way. Goku has also had to use more tactical skills lately. I love dragon ball but I acknowledge it’s redundancy and tropes and especially when it is not telling stories in a proper manner.

I agree wholeheartedly about Cannibal Holocaust. The movie is very interesting, and I really love the opening theme song, but I cannot watch it again. I believe the film is worth watching at least once, but be warned that it is not for the faint of heart. Flower of Flesh and Blood is a film I don't think is really worth watching unless you are a huge gore fanatic, but it is very poetic in a very twisted sense. Personally, I like Hideshi Hino's other Guinea Pig film better. I feel Mermaid in a Manhole has a more interesting story, but again, it is pretty graphic. I am glad that I have seen these films, but I don't really have the stomach for them anymore.

Clarifications from a Dragon Ball fan: there is a stand alone movie with a character vastly weaker than Goku called The World's Strongest when the villain's plan is to steal Goku's body. Goku dies during the Cell saga and Vegeta becomes more focused on training and his family (Bulma and Trunks). When Goku is allowed a day on Earth, Vegeta lets himself be controlled by a wizard named Babidi so that he revert back to his old self and challenge Goku. Their power unleashes a monster and Vegeta soon regrets his decision. Vegeta sacrifices himself in order to destroy the monster to no avail. Later in the arc, Vegeta recognizes Goku as being superior. Vegeta still has a competitive streak with Goku but nowhere near as intense as before. Goku and Vegeta have learned to fight together in Dragon Ball Super. Vegeta sets aside his pride when there's no other option. Because of Vegeta's downfalls and character development, he's many Dragon Ball fans favorite characters. And yes, Goku's main goal is to become more powerful, but his greatest character moment in the series is pushing his son Gohan to become the new hero. Gohan in the Cell Saga is the first character to become a Super Saiyan 2. It's the only time Gohan defeats the big villain. That status quo isn't upheld however. Hopefully you're not annoyed by this comment but I had to write it as someone who loves Dragon Ball. It is more than just my power beats your power. You probably didn't know it started out as an adventure comedy and doesn't start focusing on power until King Piccolo is a threat.
@nerdking10195 жыл бұрын
Goku was not written to be a superhero. He’s selfish and self centered. Goku likes fighting. It’s in his blood. Goku does care about people. He will protect his friends and family. But he will also let Frezza power up to 100% because he WANTS to fight him at full power. He enjoys fighting and wants to fight the strongest guys. He’s certainly not an interesting characters. Dragon Ball’s interesting characters are guys like Gohan, Future Trunks, and so on. Goku is written in a way that allows them easily keep telling stories. Because in Jump Manga unlike in comics time passes. Dragon Ball starts with Goku being 13 or so. Now he’s a grandfather who babysits his baby granddaughter. What most Jump manga writers due now is give characters goals or dreams that require fighting. For example in Naruto. Naruto wants to become Hokage. The Hokage is the leader of his village. There also the strongest person and the one to protect the village and its people. Naruto’s goal requires constant fighting. The struggle is what is right. Should Naruto forgive this person? What does it mean to be Hokage? Can he save his best friend? The same can be said for One Piece. Luffy wants to be the king of the pirates. To do this he must sail to the end of the sea known as the grand line and find the One Piece. Issue is the sea is filled wit strong people also after the One Piece. Luffy wants to protect his crew so he must fight and get stronger to do so. This is what most series do now. Give there main characters goals that can keep the story going for a really long time even if time passes in the story

I do not agree at all with your first point. A Supervillain is not defined by the Superhero they oppose. This completely ignores the "super" portion of the word "supervillain". To me a supervillain is anyone that a normal everyday hero ( a policeman, firefighter, the postman) could not defeat or challenge. There "super" because they do villainy better than humanly possible. Compare the Joker to a real word serial killer. A serial killer could only threaten one or two people at a time but the Joker can hold the entire city of Gotham hostage with the police, your everyday heroes, powerless to stop him. The same also applies to superheroes, they do heroics that average heros just can't; like when Hercules cleaned out the horse stables filled with horse dung that would have taken a lifetime for the average man.
