I'm kinda sad you guys missed the point of Morrison's Joker. After he was shot, Morrison used it as an excuse to explain that every time Batman beats Joker, he basically mentally reboots himself so he can keep Batman perpetually on his ropes to keep their fights interesting. Its basically a way of canonizing every version of Joker from the golden age killer to the silver age clown to the modern psychopath. In RIP he explains it as "Every time I try to think outside the box, he builds a whole new box around me!" or something similar to that.

I loved this story, partly because of Batman-Joker dynamics. Joker was throwing hints at him all along that Jeezbel Jet wasn't what she seemed and was with Black Glove and he also made fun of the organisation for thinking that they have broken the Bat.

Tim added Wayne onto his name because Bruce named him heir of Wayne Enterprises. So he was Tim Drake-Wayne. Also with the adoption thing, Sal didn't seem to know, but Bruce did adopt Jason as his son before he died. Bruce then retroactively adopted Dick during the time Dick was a police officer in Bludhaven. Bruce then asked Tim if he could adopt him, but Tim did some ridiculously circuitous shit with his father's will just so that he didn't have to tell Bruce "no". Tim did accept Bruce's offer of adoption the second time he asked, though. Bruce shortly after asked to adopt Cassandra Cain, too, in Batgirl v2. So at this point all of the parentless Bat kids had been adopted by Bruce. Also fuck that little shit Damian Wayne. Morrison meant to kill him off at some point and he should have.

@anthonyeldridge1468 9 жыл бұрын
The thing is, you have to read all of Grant's Bat stories including FC, RIP and the Return Of Bruce Wayne. I finally cracked it after a lot of reading including various blogs and such to help..... SPOILERS DARKSEID: During Final Crisis, Darkseid gets within a hair's breadth of conquering reality while dragging Earth into a singularity with himself at the center. He captures Batman to create a cloned army not only with his DNA but also with his personal emotional torment and trauma driving them. He was put into a kind of "Inception" machine that would allow them to dig into his memories and feed them into the clones. Bruce "woke up" inside the machine and overloaded the clones until they started clawing their eyes out from the emotional trauma Bruce had stored up. Batman finally escapes, picks up the bullet used to kill Orion fired from the past (just go with it) puts it into a gun and confronts Darkseid himself. When he fires the bullet, Darkseid hits him with the Omega Sanction, a "life trap" that no one can escape from. While Bruce is paralyzed by the Omega Beams, Darkseid unleashes a Hyper-Adaptor from an Ancestor Box that will follow Bruce like a hound for the rest of his life. When the Hyper-Adaptor is exposed, the Omega Sanction starts to warp time itself around Batman in that moment. THIS IS KEY. Darkseid literally alters Bruce's continuity. We don't know the full extent of it but everything with Doctor Hurt, RIP, Damian, Jezebel and no telling what else were put in place thanks to Darkseid's use of the Hyper Adaptor and the Omega Sanction. Bruce's whole life became a trap!

After reading this I realized why so many hated Damian Wayne. I loved him in New 52, but after reading this and this was most likely people's first impression of him I was like, "Oh... I see now." Well, at least I stayed for the New 52 version and watched him grow as a character, Robin, and a son. Sadly his newest comic confused by right at the start but I'll still give it more chances.
@caitlinbrewer4843

Well, Morrison introduced Damian planning to kill him. I actually think Damian was his exercise in writing character development. Damian is really unlikable at first, but once he teams up with Dick Grayson as his Robin and gets a lot of character development (he really likes animals and adopted a cow, which he named Bat-Cow, he makes a friend named Colin who also has powers and they fight crime together, and grows very close to Dick, actually preferring him to Bruce). Eventually, readers grew to really like him and he got an extended role in other books, but Morrison still killed him because he had completed his arc.

Thomas Wayne's last words, "Zorro in Arkham", to Bruce at the end of this comic is the origin of the phrase "Zur-En-Arrh". The reason Bruce replies, "What?", to his father is because he misheard the last 3 words as the phrase. Zorro In Arkham = Zur-En-Arrh

Not all comics should be an easy read. This first time I read R.I.P. a lot of it went over my head. But I enjoyed enough of it that I realized I just needed to do some work to familiarize myself with the context that Morrison leaves out to better connect with the story. You see there is a place for Shakespeare and Ulysses in literature and there is a place for Grant Morrison in comics. Knowing this I’m so glad I did spent the time needed on this as I now consider R.I.P. the best Batman story ever written. It’s the highlight to Morrison’s amazing Batman run. To make the reader work harder can build a better payoff when the pieces come together. That is what we have here. I find the same true with Final Crisis too, but I’ll leave that discussion for a Final Crisis video. I recommend you go back and read R.I.P. again. Every time I would get lost in a panel and didn’t know what was going on, I either spent the thought and time to figure out what was going on, what was being said, or I went back to figure out how the scene was set up, what the references where and meant. It was worth it. Most of the time I just had to reread a few word bubbles until the words mad sense. Morrison uses complicated language to describe confussing ideas. He writes panels that are just plane confussing at first read. But his dialogue is worth spending the time to know what he is talking about. It inspires great thought. Give it the effort. The payoff is well worth the price.

that page in the beginning of Batman RIP (Batman issue 676) where it's Batman & Robin, and Batman yells- "YOU'RE WRONG! BATMAN AND ROBIN WILL NEVER DIE!" that's actually Dick Grayson and Damian Wayne. it's supposed to immediately follow towards the end of RIP (Batman issue 681) where it says "six months later..." Le Bossu has a police officer captured and is about to start drilling him. Le Bossu says- "compris m'sieu le cop? no one can save you from this. even Batman and Robin are dead." cue Batman and Robin's entrance. another cool detail Grant Morrison added is this scene can also be viewed from yet another vantage point at the very end of (Batman and Robin issue #3) where Dick is telling Damian- "he was part of a criminal cabal that took down your dad and tried to lobotomize me. so this time it's personal."

I thought Bruce did adopt Jason, which slightly upset Dick because he was never officially adopted until adulthood (really great little story by the way, lots of feels)? I really hated Damian at first but during the 'Batman and Robin' run while he was Dick's Robin, I truly fell in love with him. I actually cried a little when he died and then again when he and Dick reunited in 'Grayson'.

Damian is supposed to be hated, that's the whole point. He's this spoiled brat raised by assassins and a crimininal's sociopathic daughter. That's why the writer made him brutally injured Robin and even hit Alfred, of all people.

I just want to say the trigger word and the Zur-En-Ar Batman are all because of hypnosis. Hypnosis is how he trained for being crazy, but it was also how the Black Glove drove him crazy, because the hypnosis experiments were actually an Anti-Batman contingencay orchestrated by the Black Glove for a later date after they had amassed enough wealth and influence to stand against him and Batman's Zur-En-Ar personality might have been a product of self-hypnosis or meditation. I can't remember.

I feel like reading Grant Morrison is a bit masochistic. "You, the reader, are wrong!" I suppose, Grant. May I have more weird stories now? Bought trade count since I started watching Back Issues: 34

Great job on one of my fave Batman books. Just a quick note, Dr Hurt actually did kill and skin Mayhew and wear him in the first story from Batman and Son, "The Island of Mister Mayhew" I think...

First: Great Job with your video, Second: I think the ridiculous words of "Not like this" were made famous when Neo is dying in the Matrix.
