I definitely had to calm it down on buying what others have. 1. I don't have the space 2. I can only read one book at a time anyway 3. Need to save money

Had to post this after I learned the hard way😂. Couple months ago my wife asked “how did you spend $80 on comics this month” and I shrugged and said “good question”. My budget is $30 a month😂

Great video, i’m currently taking a break from reading and collecting to give my wallet a break and have been trying not to watch any comic related channels to not scratch my urge to buy until the new year and this video has definitely helped me look at collecting different and how i don’t need everything and to better my spending habits so thanks for the advice👍🏽

Great tips! As a long time collector, you were pouring out the hard truth. Be selective. Find out what you like. Don't collect everything cause you'll end up with books you'll probably never read. I help myself by budgeting, like you mentioned. I also recycle. If I get a surplus of books in, I try and sell others that I know I won't miss. Room is a factor as well!

Im quite new to the hobby both reading and collecting. Quite overwhelmed with watching a lot of videos where people kind go into dollar bins and pick up keys. I also am having the dilemma of should I just be picking up keys? or should I read first. I read digitally . So should I go about reading digitally and then if I like the series pick out the keys that I like and overtime I will build a wealth of knowledge of which books are keys ? and then will also have the ability to bin dive and find keys ?is that the secret?

To be honest your MO sounds both fun and financially appealing. If you don’t mind waiting a bit to read the newer stuff. This is a great way to go. Trade waiting is also fun too. Just keep in mind you might have to pay a lil more for some newer keys depending on how hot it gets. Marvel’s Ultimate universe stuff and indies like Beneath the trees are a good examples.

You kind of gave it indirectly, but I feel one of the best tips you ever gave in a previous video was "patience saves pockets." Goes along with you don't need everything, two really good tips to live by in any hobby. I'd also add "don't start collecting original comic art"

100% - especially for DC fans. Get DCUI and wait six months to read EVERY page they print or get DCUI Ultra and wait one month to read it all. That patience will save you a fortune while still allowing you to read everything you want from DC.

Your tip about not needing the most important format is so crucial. There is nothing better than going to a comic book store/book store and raiding the discount box. There are some stores like 2nd & charles that have literal isles of Trade Paper Backs for anywhere from $2-$10. Almost my entire collection is from discount bins. I almost exclusively buy TPBs because I can get an entire arc for the cost of a single issue.

As a new collector, this is great info to have! My collection is mainly for stories and art that I love and want to see in their best format, whether it's an absolute edition, an ombnibus, or an artisan edition. If my purpose is just to read the story, it's mostly digital through hoopla or comixology or borrowing trades from the library

Thanks for the tips, i collected 20 years ago lost a lot of valuable issues due to theft, and gave up collecting. I recently started collecting again mostly because i found my self needing a hobby. This has really helped me at least form a game plan.

One other thing I’d add to setting and keeping a budget is not to spec on books if you’re buying current. Buy what you like and the keys will follow. Sure every now and then it’s fun, but like other things, it’ll drain your budget quick and you’ll also end up with a lot of random books you have nothing to do with when it comes to organizing. I’ve recently went back through my collection and found I had books that now have value that were just read and put away at the time.

I'm split between following creators AND characters. For example, I like material by Stan Lee, Geoff Johns, Kurt Busiek, and more guys I can list AND I like characters like Spider-Man, Deathstroke, Toyman, Mr. Freeze and Doctor Doom. I follow key issues like Action Comics 865 (*written by Geoff Johns who explores the secret origin of Toyman) which was a win-win for me.

Hell yea my guy dope tips from a dope tuber 💪😁. I got another tip 8 never pay over cover price foe a book. I never did but i bought one at a good price an older used book just to hear a reprint was coming. Tip number 9 be patient whales seem to come back. Tip 10 why multi dip? If i see a better format i sell the old and use that to get the new. I couldnt own 3 of the same story in multiple formats to me thats wasted money. But keep up the great content 💪😁 Bat buddy

These are all valuable tips that any collector should write down and pin to their wall. I would add an 8th tip that helps me keep my collection in check: Set a "space limit" or "volume limit" for yourself, and stick to it. What that means for me is that I designate X number of boxes to my comic book collection. When they're full, I get rid of some and make some new space for future books. Rinse and repeat. Yes, it is absolutely sometimes difficult to choose which books / runs you're going to part with. But if you can't see yourself reading them again AND their future collectability feels low, then you can probably part ways with them. Recapturing space in your room feels GREAT. If and when your collection starts to grow out of control, it can become a source of stress rather than the fun, relaxing outlet that it is intended to be. So yeah, pick a square footage in your room, or do like I do and pick a fixed number of boxes to fill. When they're full, you trim the fat from your collection however you can. Great video!

It seems its a worldwide situation...hahah...I pass by the same situation and: I dont have space enough (I live in a 39m2 tiny apartment with my wife and my collection is in a small bookshelf in our bedroom), its impossible to read more than 1 book at a time and I dont infinite money...besides this, its okay to not buy some materials for a period and then, you notice that you have a small library with tons of books you didn't read yet... Finishing: To buy comic is amazing. To read them is much better. Greetings from Brazil.

I will always be a fan of a good library. Don't care if it's a local library, a digital service like Hoopla, or paid services like Marvel Unlimited/DC Universe. When I was getting back into comics around 2017 my local library had alot of great books on the shelves. Some outside my wheelhouse, but alot I could sink back into and catch up. Once I started running out of books I wanted to read I started into books I was told I would hate(Ms. Marvel, New 52 Wonder Woman), and found new characters/creative teams to enjoy(Brian Azzarello in general has been a treat anywhere I find him). Then I tried stuff I had zero interest in like Gotham Central. Something I always heard about, but going from Superheroes to just cops? Pssh. Who wants to read that? Yeah I ate more words on that one. Brubaker and Rucka hit some wild home runs with that, and I love finding them in other books. It's good to explore without breaking the wallet when you can.

Another tip is don't feel bad about reading digital. When I first got into Comics I was pressured to buy all physical and don't Read on marvel an DC apps cuz it hurts the LCS. Save your money and not your shop is my new direction

And the other thing is to understand people like Omar, the majority of his books have been sent to him.... He did not have to pay for them where as the the majority of us most definitely would have too. The other thing to remember is if you have a room full of omnibus's odds are there going to sit there forever and be read maybe once and never again.... Only buy books that you know you're going to read over and over and over again.
