Robert, you forgot something. The Illuminati appeared, also, in Bendis's Avengers, drawn by John Romita Jr. The story involved the Hood, if you remember. It was there that Captain America discovered the existence of the team. I remember him saying that everyone has paid for their sins and it was time for Tony to do the same. The story was in volume 4, issues 7-13.

The Illumaniti was the answer to the age old question "Why don't the Avengers help the X-Men and vice versa?" The answer was that, they ran models on it and found that the world's military powers would be too threatened by such coordination of superhumans. Eventually, the military would nuke them.

I was really hoping this alternate reality version of the Illuminati would be used as a moment to reinforce the idea that variants don't always look the same. Much like Peter 1, 2, and 3 in Spider-Man No Way Home. Get a new actor to play Tony Stark for this one universe, and let Eric Bana play Bruce Banner again. And between Iron Man and the Hulk they would have enough heavy hitters to not have to shoehorn a version of Captain Marvel into the fight scene.

5:0 to this conversation about the heroes not caring about what happened to the mutants is truly a retcon. Before marvel had hard-core continuity, superheroes were in their own comics dealing with their own issues. Later writers who wanted to use the X-Men for their own grandiose huge gigantic crossover event start it pouring tension between heroes that came about during the antihero/dark hero era of comics. It didn’t start that way and it really didn’t have to be that way because the whining they do seems very contrived, like a lost child who’s blaming their parents for not being attentive to their fragile ego. At least, that’s what it sounds like in this retcon world of 2021

In the end of that story Cap joined the Illuminati because he realized the necessity of the group.
