It seems like Atom basically underwent the same thing Deadpool did during Deadpool kills the marvel universe. Basically gains a perspective or glimpse of the outside universe (whats past the 4th wall) and goes completely nuts.

I think the key thing people forget about most super heroes (with the exception of superman or plastic man) is that they are significantly more powerful then they let on. They only hold back out of fear they'll hurt or kill anyone. This is why i said its probably something similar to Deadpool kills the marvel universe. Atom goes nuts after seeing the world behind the pages and stop holding back. Atom's always been capable of doing the things hes done in this story. Hes just never done it because heroes don't kill. Now he kills. So now he uses his power to the fullest extent of his imagination because hes no longer holding back, and possibly been revealed to by another party that he can do even more then he previously thought. That broken nose superman gave him in this story? Superman could have easily torn his head off if it wasn't for him holding back. Superman holds back though because superman doesn't kill. Atom effortlessly tore superman apart because he wasn't holding back (using his power to the fullest extent)

That would be such a headache because which versions of which characters do you include? Yes, all history is now canon, everyone's history was restored, but power levels still varied between eras. Then are we going to include Vertigo? DC Black label? Wildstorm (pre-New 52 merger), Because there goes 99% of the list. Honestly no one in the main continuity JL (even full extended roster) makes it.

dope story so far. Gave me this idea that instead of huge reboots every 5 - 15 years, I'd dig a sort regulation system (odd I know). Just that theoretically dudes like Cpt Atom are/can be all powerful, so every decade or so build to one/couple of these guys 'ascend' (some characters die, new ones introduced) this character dies or de-powered and thus a new hierarchy emerges good/bad/neutral that can very much still be titanic in scope.

Matter manipulation lets you control all the pieces on the board. Reality manipulation lets you control the board. I think that's how I'd differentiate them. If you control matter, whatever matter you manipulate all still must obey the laws of physics, but you don't even need to bother with matter if you can manipulate reality. You can just say "enough, I'm deleting dimension 3" and then everything's flatland.

Firestorm isn't Superman level strong or invulnerable. Captain Atom can manipulate the quantum field allowing him to time travel, traverse the multiverse and alter things on an atomic level. There is a version of Captain Atom that merged with Firestorm in an alternate universe...but he was absorbed by Captain Atom's villainous persona named Monarch

I've been interested in Captain Atom for a good while now. I read his New 52 run well he was very different and also very powerful. He wasn't a guy in an alien coating but a being of quantum energy. Then they changed him to where he could go back and forth between a human body and then the quantum skin could come on like a symbiote. Then as DC does all that was done and he was basically how he was Post Crisis. I'm excited that he's going to be in Justice League Unlimited and one of the reasons I'm getting the book

At the end of Flashpoint DC merged the regular universe with vertigo (which is in the DC universe but not I guess even though they crossed over all the time) and the Wildstorm universe from Image Comics. That's where Wildcats, Stormwatch, Grifter, Midnigter and others came from to form the New 52 reboot. DC did the same with Mildstone Comics (Static, Icon). My point is GO READ THE AUTHORITY from Image Comics pre New 52. Oh my god bro YOU will freaking love it!! Because that's where Jenny Sparks first appeared (actually it was the original Stormwatch that lead into the Authority). But you want to see freaking Jenny Sparks at her absolutely bad ass best you have to read the original The Authority. This new Jenny is cool but it's a pale shadow of the original, that should enough for you to go, "Wait, what now?". The Wildstorm universe rocked!!!

Technically he's kinda not wrong about being sort of a god. As a matter manipulator, he could technically create life. A body is an amalgam of chemical compounds. With enough raw material, he can make a heart pump and make electrons move to simulate brain activity. Technically... That's life.

Always thought Cpt Atom was a complicated character but in his heart Always a good person and a tough individual with a hard shell of a heroic heart. His life was a little more than a hero his past shrouded in military security, I do recall his original origins though there is where it is complicated with timelines and his base origins in the golden age of comics and the nuclear age and other outside forces. His health of mind is the story that does have a connection to his powers and then there's his future selves all are him but one turns very evil and truly kills his destiny a darker Cpt Atom. This version turned to the darkside of his ego and tore his friends apart by destroying reality. But it turns out there's another Captain Atom one I recall lost in time and was about 17 years lost time one that was a little older than the mainstream and when he eventually appeared the other versions vanished however it turns out they are all him I think Ammand Waller appears in these stories as well. Nathan does redeem himself here and there but this doesn't mean his destiny isn't going to be altered again. His mind is a time bubble of chaos and dreams of his heroic age fragmented and at it centre is the true hero a young man called Nathan. Captain Atom Returns ending his struggles with the power of timelines and a new power set of Absolutes Man Of Atom?
