JLU isn't just good because of nostalgia or good for a kids show, it's just straight up good. I've rewatched it older in life and it absolutely holds up and sets standards that I still measure the DC against today. Superman's "Cardboard box" speech is such a crazy good way to end the show too.

Most of that era of DC cartoons are exceptional in one way or another, this is from the same era of shows that gave us Batman TAS with Harley Quinn, the amazing Mr Freeze episodes, etc. JLU really feels like them learning what worked and didn't with their earlier series' and building on it.

Superman's "weakness to magic" is a misconception. He isn't weakened by magic the way he is to Kryptonite. He simply doesn't have any special immunity to nefarious spells.

I like to think of it this way. Magic disrupts what is "natural". And by "natural" I mean things that are governed by the laws of natural physics. Our biological components, and to an extent, Superman's follow these laws. For instance, when you have a paper cut, you bleed. There are molecular aspects of the process of wounding and healing. So, there's a natural system. Superman's capabilities are tied to his physiology as a Kryptonian. A natural system onto itself. Magic disrupts that system. It modifies and mutates said system. It changes it on a subatomic level and mutates the target of said magic. But ut creates a sort of imbalance. So, that's why magic, like all laws of physics (even though it ia used to break physics), magic requires energy. That's why there are sometimes rituals involving human or animal sacrifice or something. And if said energy needed is so big that you need to have it provided to you by an entity, mainly demons, you make a deal. So, in conclusion, magic in DC (in my humble opinion), behaves the same way to Superman the same way as other non-Kryptomian beings. If an Earthling can be transformed into a tree by magic, then it can probably transform Superman into a tree as well. The caveat that I can think of from this "system" is, because Superman is so powerful, you would need a lot more energy to mutate him than you would probably need for an Earthling. There are other things that can disrupt the disruptive energy of magic like belief system that is probably tied to the green energy of willpower and other emotional spectrum, for instance, but I haven't really delved into that thought and possibilities.

As someone who didn't read comics growing up, but did grow up on JLU I do think you would enjoy it. I enjoyed how they introduced new characters often and gave them compelling stories outside of the usual heroes that had tons of shows, and even without having read the comics it was easy to understand who and what was happening. I first saw The Question and Zatana there and a bunch of others I came to find interesting and looked up because I was too cheap to buy the comics and I wanted all the info now. 😂 I think people being dramatic about you not seeing it is funny, I don't know if worth buying a subscription, but if you can watch it for free I think you'd be highly entertained actually knowing whose who. 🙌🏽

It sounds like True Form Darkseid created a Matrix like simulation and called it his universe. And since he's the ultimate authority, its Administrator, then yes he's practically God there. And you could also see it as his landscape or a REAL sleep dream where you can actively control what happens in that dream. It also reminds me of Reality Marbles from the Fate universe. Like Rider Iskandar's, Archer Emiya's or Ruler Shirou Kotomine's. But all dreams must end when the dreamer awakens, like so much sea foam... At least that's how I perceive it imho.

Darkseid was never.... a super big character, he was a big character for sure, but he always scraped with Superman, and Superman beats him up and gets the upper hand on him at times, and he said that he was scared of Batman, and Batman has outsmarted Darkseid on several occasions and "killed" him one time I believe with some gun with a... New God killing bullet or whatever, where he wasn't actually killed, but it was portrayed that way at first, but Darkseid was not all that compared to the heroes. The only time that I felt that Darkseid was too much for the heroes was when he fought the Anti-Monitor, because it said that they were evenly matched and all of the heroes and even villains had to come together to stop the Anti-Monitor, so Darkseid being on that level was when I saw him as a credible threat. Now, building him up to not just be a big villain, but a God whose very presence can kill you, it is really working out for him where he doesn't feel like a character to just be pushed around and beat up by Superman or Wonder Woman stabbing his eyes out or Aquaman stabbing his eyes out or getting beat up by Doomsday or others, as well as getting outsmarted and defeated by Batman with preparation time, no disrespect to these characters, but still, Darkseid seemed more like a villain of the weak. He is now that big dog.

Rob, JLU is itme well spent and that includes the pre-unlimited seasons. Oh I wish I could start that again. When flash saves the day - ohhhhh man... son son son... you've got some amazing viewing in your future.

my dad and I were always huge superhero fans so he introduced me me to JL, JLU, Batman, and Superman the animated series and it still is my definitive view when I think about dc. Rob you gotta watch it. the shows hold up so well and tackle a lot of great topics. I wish we could get a reboot with the same amount of love and care as Xmen97 got. It would be so difficult not having Kevin Conroy reprise his roll though RIP.

Rob, I always thought that Skeets was a nod to the FFs robot H.E.R.B.I.E., maybe it is or not but that's always been my comparison. BTW,if you don't watch Justice league and Justice League Unlimited, return to Marvel Explained. You're still that Guy though
