I had all of these books in the 80’s-90’s. Oriental Heroes, The Drunken Fist, The Blood Sword and Blood Sword Dynasty etc. They were all awesome and I’m surprised they didn’t catch on bigger in the US. I wished they’d made an animated version of these books.

The fact that you reviewed Oriental Heroes made me so happy. As a kid growing up in the 80’s, I loved this comic and was crushed when it stopped being printed. I’ve reread the American series almost once a year because it takes me back to being a kid. If anyone else knew about the series, they didn’t remember too much about it. Thanks for letting me dork out for a few minutes.

This kind of comic, filed with over the top violence and bizarre villains - seems very alike to "Fist of the North Star" to me. Cool!

Loved Jademan Comics back in the day. I believe they published several titles in the US which included, Blood Sword Dynasty, Drunken Fist, The Force of Buddha's Palm, Iron Marshal and Oriental Heroes. Sadly once Jademan went under in 1993 they unfortunately never got to finish the story arcs of several of their titles. Tony Wong later created a comic called Mega Dragon & Tiger that was published by Image Comics in 1999.

I used to love this comic. You did a great job explaining the humor and weirdness of Oriental Heroes. Buddha's Palm was awesome, and so was Iron Marshal. Subbed!

Wish I'd come across this sooner (better late than never right?), I was big into Jademan comics in elementary school. I rarely see anyone in comicdom talk about manhua, so this is definitely cool. Spot on observations btw, and I dig that you mentioned Dragon Tiger Gate.

I remember buying those comic when i was 13, i got oriental dragon & drunken fist and my friend got the bloodsword destiny and buddist palm so we had the 4 main jademan comics. didnt think there were anything wrong with the violence back then those comics help inspire our backyard martial arts.

After these didn't take off in the West, I once found a whole pile of random disconnected issues in the 25 cent bin. I absolutely loved them and their crazy energy and all the wild characters, they were like kung fu movies dialed up to 11. I never expected to hear about them again.

I have ALL of the English comics from when he brought these to the US. A couple of things he failed to note in the video. He mentions Dragon Ballz and Naruto but Oriental Heroes PREDATES both comics and I would argue bith were inspired by it to some extent. Also, Mike Baron who was working for Marvel at the time, provided the English scripts for this and other Jademan comics at the time. Lastly, Tony put out a revamped version of this comic in the late 90's Early 2000's called Mega Dragon and Tiger which was published initially by Image I believe... I have those comics too. Oriental Heroes and The Blood Sword were two of my favorite comics as a kid and I discovered these before Manga and ANime became real big in the states. Great video!

this is about the fourth time that I've watched this video of yours in regards to jademan comics. Thank you for making this video and putting it out there. I was a weird kid. I love kung fu movies and monsters and all kinds of stuff. I guess that's pretty typical, but superheroes weren't really cool I went for when it came to comics. My ideas of superheroes we're just a little different. Don't get me wrong. I love Batman, and I really loved the Green Hornet because of Bruce Lee I guess. I also enjoyed some indie comics like concrete and pit and a few others. I was lucky enough to be 7 years old in the early days of dark horse comics. Not only did they have superhero comics, but they had Godzilla comics, as well as corky offbeat independent titles. When Jaden came out, my local comic book shop guy waited till I got out of grade school that week and surprised me with it. He was a great guy that really took care of my family when it came to finding a good book to read. Every summer, he would buy me a book, usually A Garfield or Calvin and Hobbes book, to take with me to summer camp. That's how much this guy cared about my mom and my uncles and everything. He also knew my love for martial arts as well as comics, and ordered the jademan comics by word of mouth and save them all for me. So every Friday when I would be able to spend the weekend with my Dad, we would go to the bookstore. Ijumped out of my skin when I saw that jademan comics. I was hooked ever since. I just have some very fond memories of reading them. Those were superheroes to me. I gotpicked on a lot because I was very much a nerd in grade school, and I didn't have many outlets or friends. Martial arts were always there for me, as well as film and comics. So that did help. Music did too,but at 6 or 7 years old, I would have rather spent my money on a Godzilla movie than a Ramones album. However, one could argue now that both would have been a wise investment. Anyways, caveman comics really helped me find other comics all over the world. so I credit jademan for getting me out of that small bubble of American comics. Sorry for the rambling. I'm driving and dictating this into my phone. I just wanted to thank you again for a great video on one of my favorite pieces of childhood memorabilia. did you ever read them when you were a kid, or did you just kind of discover them recently? Whatever the case may be, I like your take on them. Even if somebody isn't into Kung Fu or kung fu movies, they can honestly say that those comments are pretty cool. Okay my friend. Hope all is well. Stay safe and I look forward to your next video. Maybe you can do a follow-up on some of the other titles?

Mike Baron, who has written a number of DC, Marvel, and even some Image/Wildstorm books, did majority of the translating! If I'm not mistaken, there was a DC comics collaboration with Tony Wong for a Batman graphic novel.

Did you ever listen to the Deep Cuts podcast episode about Tony Wong (just dropped this year, so maybe not). The premise of the episode is how Tony didn't do any of the art, maybe had mob ties to become so lucrative as a comic artist, etc. It's an interesting take, although not very substantiated beyond "there's just no way he could build this empire by himself." Did you come across any murmurs of some funny business going on with Tony Wong and his wheelin' and dealin'?

Doctor Steele If a store has a healthy back issue collection, they absolutely could have this book. It went for about 55 issues. But it was discontinued so there’s no conclusion unless you have a way to read and translate the later Hong Kong issues. None of it should cost too much, though.

Nice vid as always! I am a new fan to you and comics both. I love hearing your thoughts since it helps me educate myself a lot. I read mostly manga, manhwa (Korean) and manhua so I am more familiar with their tropes. It's fascinating to see how different the Western and Eastern cultures are. I'm Vietnamese, not from China or Hong Kong, so I can't say this is 100% correct, but I think the 'humor' you are referring to about bodily fluid is more from how outrageous it is. The girl blowing her nose and throwing it at him is supposed to show her defiant character, that she doesn't fear a man holding hostage. It's funny in the sense that a girl shouldn't and wouldn't do it according to social norms. And I thought all the times Golden Dragon crosses his eyes were funny! People who act the fool are considered funny since everyone is supposed to be serious and not lacking in common sense. Am I a victim of the culture? Hahaha. Anyway, I look forward to more of your stuffs.

I was all into all four Jademan titles in the first year or so. I have to disagree somewhat with your assessment in that the books could be quite dry/wordy at times (Or there was a lot of action without the story moving very much at all...and each issue was 64 pages!. Oriental Heroes was one of the more 'over the top' titles though. What myself and a dude who worked a local comics store used to wonder if the coloured F/X in the books were supposed to be real, in the books world sense, or just denoting awesome action or effect?

Great vid. I loved these back in the day. Drunken Fist was my favorite. One thing to mention... Wong, later, also introduced short stories (at the back of his comics) based on Chinese horror stories. Much like the humor, these lost a lot in translation and in a nation where we think of horror in terms of Freddy, Jason, Leatherface, and zombies, these stories fell flat.

TONYYYYY... I am from indonesia. In 1991-1994 you published TIGER WONG comics from number 1 - 96 . But why you hung the uncontinued story on number 96? It was only a meeting between OLD GRANDFATHER & TIGER WONG on the beach but no more the next comic. You ended up on 96. A view years later on 2003 you published again the same remade comics with black & white comics "DRAGON & TIGER HEROES" from number 1-44. There was a continuesly story when WANG XIAO HU & MR OLD MAN met together on TIGER WONG number 96. And after D&T HEROES no 44 was hang up again then on 2005 rise up a piracy copycat comics "DRAGON & TIGER (WITHOUT HEROES) " from number 1-10. It was continuesly series from D&T HEROES 44. WANG XIAO HU can made LAO ZHU CONG (OLD MAN) got an fatal injury & CHI YOU (BARBARIAN) finally stabed LAO ZHU CONG's heart by used a sword. He was death just for temporarly and then his sword can take off from his chest by itself & he lived again but his hair was getting old white. Lao zhu cong flew over by rode his sword to the sky and left wang xiao hu and everybody. But suddenly his sword betrayed him & getting cracked until blown up in sky but nobody knows what happened to him. Can he flew to sky or fail? Everybody came back to yuan shi secte. Chi you gave farewell greeting to wang xiao hu & his friends. And the story continued when chi you went to philipines and met a homeless people who get drunk because of used a drugs on the street. Chi you woke up him & did a kungfu power phisical contact to him. And the story hang up again??? Dear tony wong, why you made comic without ending story? You always hang up the story. BTW, may I buy completed oriental heroes comics by online to you?? Pleaseee 😭😭😭😭😭😭
