Coming Out as a FURRY to My PARENTS: The Awkward Truth

My brother found furry art I saved on my phone & proceeded to laugh, point & exclaim "FURRY," but of course I denied it. Later after he moved out, I "came out" to my mom & all she said was "as long as you're not hurting anybody, I'm fine with it." After a few years, I asked her what her fursona would be. Color me surprised when she didn't say a koala (her fave animal). We worked together to create her a character (she didn't want to join, so I explained how she can still have a character & not be part of it). Together, we made Margaret: a fat, tired manatee with a little bow on her head (she named her recent manatee tattoo Margaret & wants a specific drawing I made as a tattoo as well).

My Mums okay with me being Ace and Furry Dad was a Navy Military and Paratrooper he was like humans cant be Ace XD like medical terminology I was just like Don't expect grandkids lol My mums side has Miami and Cherokee so the see it being a special thing being part of the lgbtq+

My mom's a real one, honestly. Extremely hard to faze, just rolls with whatever, supportive but in a fairly laissez-faire way. Honestly I appreciate it. The furry thing is included in that, although probably not the weirdest thing if I'm being real.

I think it's okay if LGBTQ+ furries use the same term to describe it, because you're basing it off your own experiences in a lighthearted way. It's less okay if someone who has no idea what it's like to come to terms with sexuality or gender identity tries to appropriate the term.

Sadly my family is the kind of family that would burn me at the stake and disown me if they found out that I was a furry. I grew up in a Conservative Christian household and I know I will never be able to tell them 😢 I had to find my way and identity all by myself. I'm happy that your parents were supportive

TBH I don't think disclosing you're a furry to family members, unless you'd expect a positive reception, doesn't really add anything. It's one thing to disclose that you're gay, trans, etc because it's an impending life decision, regarding marriage, etc, that requires to lay out expectations with everyone. Being a furry is a hobby/community thing to me and my business with that is my business.

I told my parents when I was 15 the completely wrong way, but as far as I can tell they assume I grew out of it. If all goes right I’m getting a fursuit for my 22nd birthday in 2025, and that’s how I’m breaking it to them that, no, it wasn’t a phase, and explaining better.

I've found that most people either don't know or couldn't care less. I'm a vet nursing student who is finishing up Vertebrate A&P, and for one of our projects we had to diagram and label the feline muscular system. I decided to hand copy and fully render the flat images from the textbook. Still, they were just copies, and even though I threw in a freehand drawing for one of the diagrams, I felt it wasn't enough. So I drew a cover page illustration of an anthro cat with an athletic build, flexing at the viewer. Sure, everyone would know I'm a furry, but I ran with it. My classmates thought it was cool, and were amazed at my artistic skills. My professor thought it could be a vet tech mascot, like a superhero. I ended up getting an A on the project.

My new about me being a furry and their not happy about it. So I have to hide my furry hobby because their own Christian ambitions about furries were the cause of the sin of lust. They never listen to me. So I have to hide for their own normal style.

Honestly, I don't see it conflicting with Christianity much, being a conservative Christian myself (Protestant, not a furry BTW) as long as you don't do anything... well, gay. Or overly sinful. I feel so lucky that my parents "got it" so easily. My friend invited me to a con when I was 14, and my dad very kindly took us both. I heard years later that when Dad got home, he told Mom that "they're all like [our child]. It's an entire convention of [my name]s." He even went by Lobo while he was there during the 4 years he took me.

Honestly: My fursuit was just there one day and that was it. There were never questions asked or whatever. I mean that first suit was commission, but I later made 2 more suits myself. To me fursuiting is anyway rather playing a role.

I never told my parents I'm a furry and I have no plans to (Dad died 9 years ago, Mom's still kicking). Reason being, my family is...judgmental. Critical. Draws unnecessary attention to and scoffs at anyone who is or likes something different than they're used to, especially me since I'm the youngest in the family and still get viewed as "the baby of the family" despite being fucking 49 (I'm literally surprised I no longer get asked what I want to be when I grow up). Plus my mom loves to gossip about family members to the rest of the family no matter how personal, embarrassing, or humiliating the information is. So despite how proud I am to be a furry, I can see no benefit to letting the family know I'm a furry and have no interest to do so.

I haven't even told my parents that I'm a furry and LGTBQ at all. They are so old fashioned and closed off to new ideas and stuff that are strange to them. Plus, being from a country that does not like LGTBQ community made them dislike the LTGBQ community. Love the awesome story. Keep up the awesome job.

I'm still a bit hesitate to be fully a part of the community, but I making smol steps. And after many, many years I was able to buy a furry head what I always wanted (as a child too). And when it's arrived I showed my dad, and he just: Wow, that looks amazing. And that's all xD And when I going to the conventions he just wish me to have fun and be safe. He still does not care much about my hobbies and such... So luckily I do not have to be affraid.

At family evenings together, I used to choose movies, fairy tales that have anthropoid animals like zootopia. I have a whole house covered with foxes. Wallpaper ma computer, phone with a fox. My name is also a fox. And nothing. When I finally said it, my dad said it was childish and weird. But I think he complains most about the price of fursuit.

Wasn't any problem for me. My mother wasn't the least bit surprised; I've always been obsessed with anthros. My brother is indifferent to the whole notion. The older of my two sisters was fascinated by my fursuit. My parents are divorced, with my father being completely estranged, therefore I didn't need to worry about his opinion.

See, i would've made the joke of forgetting to hide the bodies. Though a kind of similar story, though, it wasn't in the purpose of revealing something. As a historian , i collect tons of military memorabilia of all sorts. Had some family friends coming over who hadn't seen me in years. They didn't know i had a huge collection, and its the same way as your furry art. It ranges from ww1 to the late 90s, and since said family friends are jewish, i couldn't find a good place to hide the (ww2 german stuff) so I hid it all in a linen closet. Of course i forgot and and there, curious son ends up opening the door. Lets just say they have a joke/nickname for me. "Closet Nazi" 😂
