This is a short synopsis of my coming out story as well as a message of hope for anyone out there who is struggling with their sexuality and telling their friends and family.

Great story. I am also a Christian and struggled for many years with being gay. Every time I would begin to accept myself, something bad would happen, and I would assume that God was punishing me for being gay. I now realize these were just the trials and hardships we all face, and these events had nothing to do with my being gay. This past year I became so overwhelmed that I finally just prayed that I did not understand why I was gay and asked God to show me what to do. He answered that prayer by saying that He loved me, that He created me just the way that He wanted me, and that He did not want me to be ashamed of who I was. I finally came out to myself February 28, 2015. It should not take someone till they are 50 years old to get to this point, but I am stubborn. Since that time I have come out to many close friends who have been very supportive. I still need to come out to my family. Thanks for helping gay Christians realize they are still loved by God. I know God could easily make me straight if it was his will. I don't understand why I am gay, but I know "All things work together for good to those who love God." Rob

This is so true by for me it is different I have to have a strong emoitiol bond before having feelings for someone and I have only liked a few people like that in my life but it does not have racial or gender preference and I had feelings for a guy who I was close with and we both liked each other so I said what if I your in my dreams and thoughts all the time and I felt so relieved and felt that I did what God wanted me to do since I prayedGod kept telling me to tell him and this guy's reaction was he smiled and pushed and put his arm around me for the first time don,t know were it will go but I think and feel we are soul mates since this happened Febuarury 13, 2020 and we have known each other since Augest 14,2019 and have been friends since September and close since November and have had feelings since early January. I am happy for those who have found themselves and never stop believing in yourself you can do it plus God is love not hateful like FAKE Christians and FAKE churches say there are TRUE Christians and true churches out there. ( sorry about the spelling and grammar mistakes )

I've known I was gay since grade 8 and I never said anything to anybody because I was scared of what people would say/think. I wasn't myself for so many years, that I became depressed and started an eating disorder in grade 10. I let it bring me down for no reason because 10 years later, I'm now 23 years old and about 2 weeks ago I came out to my mom. I remember standing in her bedroom door and just telling her I was gay, and I honestly thought she would yell at me but it turned out she supports me. Literally 10 minutes after telling my mom, I took to Facebook and I told everyone I was gay. I was once again shocked because I was scared of what people would think but everyone supports me. Before coming out, I took to youtube and tumblr to seek advice on coming out and watching your video and others alike have made it easier. I want to thank you for the advice. THANK YOU!

Great video. 👍 I came out at 18 in 1974 in NY where I grew up. It was only 5 years after Stonewall. Even in NYC, things were very difficult for us then. We had to fight constantly to establish our rights. And we were always angry. Listening to your video was moving for me because it made me feel like all that struggle was worth it. That's why we fought so hard - to create a better life for future generations of Gay people. I'm glad it was a lot easier for you. It's clear that you're paying it forward too. Just over 17 years now coming out to my Catholic family. For some it was a long process, it was a different time. I have actually yet to meet anyone who ever regretted coming out although not always a smooth road for some. My family is accepting now. I have watched so many coming out videos on KZbin and they have helped me so much whenever I am feeling down or stressed out in my life. I don't know how u guys do it to be so brave and open with the world. I can only hope to be like that one day and not be afraid to be myself. Sounds just like what I went through with my family. Not all accepted me and they did disown me, but, I'm my own person today. I came out a long time ago, and now have a husband. We were legally married in 2009, but have been together since 1975. Even though I've been cut off from some of my family, there's so many awesome people out there who will accept you, even if for some reason you wouldn't think they would be supportive. Michael, what a beautiful, sincere and inspirational video. For years I didn't get how relatively easy things are for me as a straight person, or what a struggle some of my LGBT friends and the LGBT community at large have had to endure. To me, it's no big deal. I have brown hair, he has blond hair. I am straight, she is gay. Meh, whatever, right? I'm sorry more folks out there don't get that we are all who we are, and that our mandate as people - religious or not - is to be good to one another. @@GlynRobinson Hi! I was reading the comments while listening and I saw yours. Nothing is "meant to be", your future is up to you... So don't be afraid to live it fully. If you were not ready to come out don't worry about the past and think about the future! Try to speak with somebody, a person you really trust or even a stranger! For example you could search for a group or a community dealing with this stuff near you. I'm sure that people with your same story could help. And remember: the fact that you waited till now should not stop you from deciding to change your life tomorrow. Don't give up, don't just continue with your life as it is only because it has always been like this. I'm with you 💪 . . Btw sorry if I made some mistakes or something I wrote is not so clear. I'm not a native speaker 🙃

Hi Michael you seem a very kind and loving person with a touching personal story, an inspiration to other young guys who are trying to find their way in life, I love the way you look after Mathew he obviously adores you. When I came out it was 50 years ago and times and attitudes were very different, no media for gay people in those days, no home computers and the internet didn't exist, I'm in my 60's now and see so many opportunities for young gay guys and much greater tolerance your generation has so much more freedom than I had at your age and I love seeing you all enjoying life and helping each other, we've come along way in my life time, from terrible bigotry etc to the way we live today, to see you young guys today makes what we fought for over the past 50 years so worth it.

Thank you for sharing your story. Suppressing yourself is never a good thing, I'm glad you can be free of that now. It is great to have accepting and supportive people around you. Never feel ashamed of yourself. Remember that there are people who love you, and God loves you just the way you are.

this is incredible...doesnt it seem ironic that in a world where we all seem so secluded, we all are one people who have all dealt with who we are in many different ways. Gay, Straight, or somewhere in between, it should never matter. When we get cut we all bleed red and we all have hearts that beat and lungs that breathe, so why should one group of people feel they are superior to the other. Before i came out i have to say i went through the same sorts of things you talked about. The shame, the questions, the fear....it takes a person with true courage to share their story and for that i am truly inspired by this story because it shows that we are all deserving of a happy life without the fear of being who we are....you have inspired me to continue to be who i am and to help those out in the world who maybe havent gotten to that point yet. To those people i want to say that you each are beautiful inside and out and NEVER let anyone tell you otherwise. Yes it is a hard road to walk down, but you are never alone. Michael, this is one of the most touching coming out stories on KZbin. Congratulations and thanks for sharing. I would like to point out a specific part of it starting at 5:07 when you're telling about the reaction of your best friend when you came out to him: "He was surprised. He was taken aback, but at the same time his biggest concern was (you know) if I was happy, and he said he'd support me and gave me a big hug, and that kind of gave me the motivation and the drive and the confidence to continue my story." This really shows the importance of a positive reaction of the very first person one is coming out to. Big hugs from a 37 year old gay man from Germany who came out to his family and friends just a few months ago and made the same experience with his best friend who gave me so much support that I could continue my story successfully (only positive reactions!). :)

You're such a kind person and your story was told with such empathy for those who might be struggling with coming out now. Just look at how wonderful your life is now because you came out and lived the life God intended for you. I came out in my late 20s and things weren't quite as easy for me, but I had a long-time partner and lived a great life with him for 30 years so it was absolutely worth it to me. Take care of yourself and your husband and have a fantastic life!

I might be only 11 but I know who I am I came out to two of my best friends and it was so emotional that by the end of it I had to just cry and hug her and then my friend who was a male who I told I was gay to said to me u will always be the same person that I met the day I met u it will never change the way I think of u and by the end of that talk he had told me he was bi so I think that everyone should come out bc it gives others the confidence to come out to and it helps u understand that people love u no matter what

Michael, thanks for your coming out video. I am 63and just came out in January of 2019. I agree with you and you are the.first one who said you were lying to yourself and others. I was too lying to myself and others for fifty years. I was a child in an alcoholic home and because of that I suppressed my feelings at an early age just to survive emotionally. I started eating to bury the feelings and the pain. When I first was attracted to someone it was in the sixth grade. I didn't know what a crush was but I had one. When the attractions to men began at puberty I was terrified of them and stuffed them down also and piled food on top. . This continued all of my life. I too came from a church background and actually started leading singing in my church when I was 14. By 16 I was leading the worship services and directing 2 choirs. I remained in the church for 37 years doing music programs in 6 different churches. I'm my twenties I sought counseling just to talk about my feelings. I used my increasing weight to suppress my feelings and to create a barrier between me and others. I'm 50 years I had one friendship with a guy I.met in a support group for children of alcoholics. I shared that I was gay and I knew that he was straight. I had a mancrush on him and he knew it but I never crossed his boundaries. We would all hug after support meetings. One night I was over at his house and got up to leave he came to me and we hugged. After a while the big stopped and we just held each other. Each needing the touch of another human being..he then said I wish this would never end. We finally broke apart and I left. That was the most intimate time I had ever had with anyone in over fifty years. The coming out videos on KZbin helped me find the courage to come out. I didn't have the loving and accepting people in my life. Just about everyone was shocked even though they reassured me of their love and friendship. My emotions are still on a rollercoaster and I often struggle through each day but KZbin and gay hotlines get me through. It is now March 15th and I'm a lot better. I actually have 3 gay friends that I've talked to. It is never to late to be honest with yourself and come out. Do it in your time. Thanks Michael, Andy [e-mail]

Sweetheart that was beautiful. Brought a tear to my eye. I came out over 30 years ago and have never looked back. I remember at the time that it was a fear of rejection from my family that initially held me back from doing it. Once I had done it though I wondered what I was worried about. I built up all these excuses in my head why I couldn't tell them, but it was so liberating when I finally worked up the courage to tell them. I didn't get one negative comment from the people that truly loved me, and at the end of the day, they are really the only people that matter. I did not have the same fate as you, I came out in 2004 and it was very difficult, I had many family problems, but the ones go away. Even though it may be difficult, it is worth. Michael Sweetheart.....that was a wonderful and inspiring coming out story that I have heard in awhile. You spoke from the heart and so grateful to hear that your family was so supportive. In time baby you will find your way as a gay man living the life you were meant to live through the love, friendships and relationships you will experience. I have been out and proud for nearly 30 years honey and coming from a dysfunctional home(long story for another time) I came out to my Mom and she was the most loving and supportive and she knew all along. I have 2 siblings that figured it out and didn't care...as long as I was happy. I have been a mentor/mama for nearly 6 years now for our gay youth. I help those kids who have been shunned or tormented just because of who they love. I am there for all you kids if ever you need a shoulder to lean on or cry on. I have been through ALOT and seen alot in my day when it comes to the gay community. I had participated in ALOT of gay pride parades and every time I did it felt like coming home. Honey I would suggest if you ever have a chance to march or be a spectator at a parade I highly recommend it...there you will find other gay folk you can speak with, young and old and realize we are not so different at all....we come together because of taking PRIDE in all that we've been through. You weren't born yet when fighting for our freedoms and gay rights were a big thing years ago....but today you kids enjoy a life that is much easier than it was for me. We paved the way for you kids to live in a better and more accepting life just for being who you are. Always remember baby, NEVER let being gay define who you are and NEVER let ANYONE treat you less than you are. You are a person with high morals, ethics and standards and deserve to be treated as an equal! I will get off my soap box now....just be a good person honey and treat others with dignity and respect and if you do things will come back to you in many ways more than you'll ever know. Dont ever let those who dont understand cause you to lose your self respect, which is often a path to suicide etc about 8-9% of the people are gay / lesbian -data from iceland and denmark where there is almost no closet hold your head high, ignore the bad people. I can relate very much. I have been in denial of my sexuality for decades. My beloved parents were so against homosexuality that I was never able to tell them the truth. I was taught that it is morally wrong and anyone with those kind of feelings is sick. When I was nineteen I felt in love with another nineteen year old. We were absolutely head over heels with one another. But my parents found out and all hell broke loose. So I've been forced to like girls which never worked for me. I'm just now starting to come out after years of acting straight. Am still afraid of what family and friends will say and do. As I watch videos like this one I can't help but to cry. I've been at the verge of committing suicide due to the loneliness I've experienced through out my life. I've missed out on plenty of hugs and just plain affection simply because I have suppressed my feelings in order to make other people happy and just so they will not ostracize me and shun me. I wish so much my beloved parents would have said to me "it's okay, we love you regardless".

Wow. I had the same experience as you did, with the restaurant and the car ride home and the _weight_ of it, except it was with my mom. It's nice to know I'm not the only one who went through with that. I grew up painfully shy and a Jehovah's Witness (which has gay=bad *and* don't fraternize with the non-believers), so I never dated in school and just lived under the assumption that I was straight, but a very, very late bloomer (or something). I was well into my 20s (and years out of that religion) before I started to figure out why I wasn't attracted to girls... and why Olympic diving events were always the best things to watch. ;) Anyway, thank you for sharing your story. :D

It is what it is in high school the people of District 7 has chosen this for me. Terrible how some can be so hateful. You are a super individual for doing this. Have finally come too the same conclusion many years later. Hard too do should not have too. It was not a choice but rather something that I have been given since birth.In high school those feelings were not handled well by others. I am like this gentleman and have struggled in the same way. He was Catholic also and it was not a choice.

The Don't Do It in Public is so true. The first time i came out, it was in restaurant.I was with my best friend. I burst out crying right after i uttered the word Gay. It felt so strange. I could not control it. It took like 20 minutes for me to literally stop dripping the tears.. I was lucky, there were only few people. At the time i was completely ignored the fact that i was in restaurant... (kind of selfish cuz i did not consider my friend's feeling lol) But, the feeling after that was so nice. I felt relieved :D So, my advice will be the same with Michael.. you will never now what might happen after saying the word. better consider about the place where u gonna say that. I know this video is quite old by now, but just discovered your channel and found this really sweet and inspiring! I had an extremely similar story, much of my family is quite conservative and religious. I'm out to friends/co-workers but not my family. I don't know how it will go so I'm planning a move to another city and I'll tell my mom a couple days before I leave, just in case I'm disowned or whatever, ha. My own journey went a bit differently, I considered myself a Born Again Christian for a time. Tried to reconcile my bisexuality with my faith, but in the end I could not. I'm agnostic now and don't have many positive things to say towards organized religion as a whole. I don't believe being an LGBT person and believing in God is a binary thing though, religious beliefs have a good way of constantly impeding human rights and civil liberties though, in my mind. Not going for an argument or anything, just sharing a bit about my story too. I just choose to live my life with no regrets, whether there is a God or an afterlife or not. I am who I am, those who cannot accept me, I just can't have in my life...even if it's my own family. I won't live my life in the shadows anymore, no matter the consequences. I caught a couple newer videos before I went back to view your older ones. You seem very happy now and I'm really happy for you Michael!

Thanks so much for sharing your story. It was very brave for you to take the step and accept yourself. And how nice is the fact that you had positive reactions and found someone special to share the whole experience with! ☺ I'm really happy for you. It was really inspiring and for me, reaffirming. Because for me, coming out is really not an option in Bangladesh, which is a country where gay is such a taboo. I mean I can imagine how my parents (while they're relatively progressive) would react. My dad would probably try to talk me out of it (as crazy as that sounds) and my mom'd probably be very loud and then faint. 😋 there'd be religious reasoning at some point of course. Point is, no good is going to come out of it. It's not like I'm going to meet some guy here and live happily ever after! But at the same time im not going to waste my time denying who I am. I know who I'm and that's that. For now the plan is to finish my undergrad in engineering and move to a gay friendly country ASAP (hopefully). And I'll see where things progress from there. Sorry for such a long comment. I guess I really was inspired to even share my like entire future plan. It's also the first time I've spilled my guts like that to anybody(now that I think of it even I'm surprised,haha ) so please reply otherwise I might be quite hurt. 😢 (I'll try to make sure you see it) And all the best wishes for you. ☺
