Been wearing the same glasses (cheaper end Polish frames) for 7 years and the hinges are still like new, and that's with them being in overextended position all the time, as I have a big head.

Ive had spring hinges on my glasses, never had an issue with it breaking on me. but with older glasses w/out the spring hinges they would keep getting loose on me and falling off my face quicker. which was super annoying. what would you recommend then?

I would also have to keep trying to bend the sides back in so it had a proper fit but i'm assuming the frames were a little smaller than my face?

I have glasses with two screws on the hinge, one is for the hinge where the temples connect (standard screw on all eyeglasses) but I have an additional screw on the temple part which is part of the hinge mechanism. Do you know what that's called or what type of mechanism it is? I had to loosen that screw to get the hinge to align otherwise the hinge screw would be impossible to line up. Unfortunately I backed it all the way out and now I can't get that little screw to screw in, it's incredibly small, smaller than the standard hinge screw.

Monoblock hinge. Hate these. Absolutely dreadful for working on, but they’re incredibly resilient by nature. In this case though, they suck. Just takes patience. Best to set and start the screw furthest from the lenses first then the other one, they needed to be tightened evenly once you’ve got both started.

Great video. Thank you. I was sold a child's frame, uhg, unbeknownst to me, with spring hinges. I try to widen the frames but the spring hinges are tight and quickly and strongly snap right back into tightness. Is there a way to widen small frames with tight spring hinges?

Of course, the bend needs placed further up closer to the front of the frame rather than in the spring area. If it’s designed where the spring directly attaches to the front with no end piece connected, then unfortunately that’s not gonna be workable, at least not easily or well.

Hey. Great video. With normal wear, what is the average life span of average quality frames? Not necessarily spring hinges.

Tough to say really. I’ve seen right shit frames last 10 years and I’ve seen incredible pieces be broken in a year. People are wild man. 😂. Ild say a say average life expectancy for the average user and frame and DAILY wear would be 2-3 years though :). EASILY extending into several years or even decades with pairs to rotate through and proper maintenance. Some of the stuff I work with could last generations in that type of environment. Which is interesting, because those buyers are the ones that change up styles the most often 🧐

This is a great insight on hinges, I have one pair of glasses with and one without spring hinges and your right about all the wonkiness that goes with it. It’s weird that the non spring hinge is perfectly bench aligned and fits perfect, but if the spring hinged glasses are bench aligned the don’t sit straight, so that’s got me scratching my head, not sure why, maybe because like you said there is so much play in the hinge? Have you found that to be the case? Maybe another video addressing this? Thanks!

Yup, especially in the mid range and below, the slip in the hinges allow for things to sit all over the place. Same reason I don’t like memory metal frames. The concept is so it stays in shape easier but the problem comes from the give being there causing it to inevitably be out of adjustment more than it’s in. Odds are the give in one is different than the other letting that one temple raise up a bit when seated on the ears creating the deviation. 😎

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 Thank you for clearing that up! I knew something was weird, because most of non spring eyeglasses fit perfect when bench aligned.

Hiiii. I found your video during a search. Do you know if you can change the arms of these glasses without ruining the spring hinge aspect?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
Of course the temples can be swapped with the same ones. Usually a special tool is required to do this though.
@tinkerbellof04

@@ThatGlassesGuy03 so, if I wanted to swap with a different kind… is that a no-go? Also, what tool?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
The tool for “spring hinge alignment” I’ve never seen available outside optical suppliers, but I’m sure there are ways out there. And yes for a host of reasons you wouldn’t be able to just swap to another temple and things work properly.

Not a fan of the spring hinge here. They almost always give-way eventually and it's really difficult to get them repaired. Whereas with a barrelled hinge, it's usually just a case of replacing or tightening the screw. Also, my face isn't perfectly symmetrical, so when I wear a frame with a sprung hinge, the frame usually won't sit parallel to my eyebrows and needs constant adjusting; very annoying.

Which eyeglass frame material would you recommend more: Acetate or TR?
@ThatGlassesGuy03
@ThatGlassesGuy03 Жыл бұрын
Lots of variables to it, but most times I would prefer acetate. FWIW, I have 0 TR90 frames in my personal collection.
