Ah, the central conceit of Comix Zone - that a geek could be fit, good looking, and likeable, with a clear sense of right and wrong.

One of the most memorable late Mega Drive games and also a time capsule of alternative rock and grim and gritty comics. To me it sounds amazing even though it uses the dreaded GEMS driver.
@JoLiKMC3 жыл бұрын
Oi! The Game Boy Advance port may look like crap, but _dig that soundtrack!_ The only way this game could be better is if someone made a Sega CD hack that uses the Sega Tunes remixes, where appropriate. Now _that_ would be rockin'.

I had the Sega Smash Pack 2 version of this game. Judging from the footage here, it probably plays and sounds the most like the Genesis original. Really interesting video to me. I actually had no idea there were Win 95 and GBA versions.

@LorenHelgeson3 жыл бұрын
I think there were some tricks of the hardware that the porters couldn't figure out how to emulate. Look at the Sega Forever and Steam versions if you get a chance. The Steam one is a complete mess.

I mean, it's 60fps, it still moves okay generally, they did a decent job of resizing the sprites and backgrounds to fit the GBA's smaller resolution, but it does look like they cut out a *lot* of the animation frames

I'm sure all of the PC ports probably helped pay the bills in the west during the Saturn era, but to be certain, past or present, Sega sure never seemed to be too concerned about console exclusivity as long as people were still playing their games

@@evenmorebetter To be honest I never knew there was a console war back then. As a kid I had Mega Drive / still have Sega CDX while my friend had SNES and we enjoyed playing both together. But I guess Sega, as arcade developer back then, was interested to convert new audience into potential buyers like Sony is trying now.

@@jasonlee7816 I was a kid in 90's and doesn't really cared about what console to play. I had Atari 2600, NES, Mega Drive/Sega CDX and PlayStation. In 2004 I've got my first PC and lost any interest in consoles until 2007 when I bought Nintendo DS Lite. This is also the point when I learned about console wars in general.

The music in the GBA version kinda sounds like something from the Amiga. And yes, it uses Shin'en's GAX Sound engine which was actually better than Nintendo's own sound engine. The GBA didn't have a dedicated sound chip, the sound needed to be handled through the CPU like the N64. The GBA port was pure garbage though

Wow, I wasn't expecting a comparison of this game! Well, anyway, Comix Zone is one of those games that never got the good reception that they deserved back in the day but have gotten plenty of retrospective praise. I personally admire it for it's creativity and actually find it quite fun to play unlike what some people might say. It might not be up to the same level as it's Japanese counterparts in terms of pure gameplay quality, but it's still a great experience nonetheless. Anyways, here are my thoughts on the other versions, Windows 95: What happened here? It has to be a lazy port. Being one of the earliest games to come out on win95, I didn't expect anything too amazing, but seriously, what went wrong here? The graphics are quite disappointing, instead of bothering to improve the colors for VGA they just kept it as the same heavily dithered 9-bit Genesis graphics. Not poor, but certainly disappointing. Also, the OPL music sounds flat and dull compared to the Genesis original (which TBH is fine considering the limits of 2-op FM synth). And need I mention that blistering frame rate, lol! I also can't imagine that it controls all that well. Best that you don't play this port for anything other than nostalgic value. GBA: Not much to see here, just the typical mess that you'll find from GBA ports. It ticks all the boxes, blocky and messy graphics, awful music, bad controls (probably); and overly loud, severely bitcrushed sound effects. It does look like they somewhat tried to improve the colors, but that won't save this turd of a port. Prototype: Now this is rather interesting. Some people might say that it's better than the final release, but I have to say that I still prefer the title screen and intro themes from the final version. Also of note are those (awful) raindrop sound effects at the Statue of Liberty page, as well as all the other little differences that I'm too lazy to point out. All in all, I think they changed stuff up for the better.
