I love how Tangye the black lab is now living out his days in comfort back here in the UK, although I hope Asbo is OK too! Apparently Tangye spent 5 years on the frontline with British troops, going out on every patrol possible! There are great anecdotes of how, with British troops under heavy fire, Tangye would take up a lead position and run up and down the full length of our line barking, as if he was an officer encouraging the men forwards! However, 1 soldier did comment that "war was a bit of a game to him and you often wondered if you threw a grenade at the enemy, Tangye would fetch it and bring it straight back"! That cracked me up!
@JammyDodger453 жыл бұрын
Tangye died late in '19, he'd been in the UK since '10 and was probably around 14yrs old. He lived his UK life to the full and was a much loved family pet who loved everyone and everything around him. Given where he came from and how many highly kinetic Patrols he went on it's a miracle he made it through his first couple of years never mind lived such a full life. I suspect there are many serving and former troops who, like myself, had a tear in their eye when they thought about that crazy little pooch!

@@KingDomsKingdom85 - I know what you mean. I've always had dogs in the family and there is no doubt at all that the bond of love is two way and real. The Military Service dogs I've met over the years were all utterly loyal to their Handlers and on many occasions willingly and knowingly put themselves into real danger to protect 'their' Section mates. There was a Handler who was killed on one of my Afghan tours and they couldn't get his dog to leave his bedspace when they got back to the patrol base, the dog was literally crying on the lads kit. It was heartbreaking to watch (I heard, but didn't see firsthand so can't guarantee that it's absolutely true, that he had to get taken back to the UK as he just would not bond with another handler). The older I get the more I realise that my ideal situation is a farm with lots of dogs & horses and less people around!

Those are the types any military unit could live without. Another type are the ones who think themselves hardcore, even going to far to get an Airborne/Ranger contract, only to wash out in the first few weeks. He was the first one to get a negative counseling statement, which is basically an ass-chewing on paper. Depending on unit SOP, a certain number of negative counseling statements can lead to UCMJ (Uniform Code of Military Justice) action. They gave the guy every chance to un-fuck himself, but he was gone within the first 4 weeks. A lot of dudes think themselves some hard-charging, fire-breathing "Army of One" (that was one of the Army's recruiting ad campaigns).....until it's time to do some real Army shit. Hopefully their pain has eased a little and great memories of him fills the mind rather than sorrow.

I do like the inclusive factor of the marines (and the armed forces in general) rather than it being exclusive. For example, if you do sustain an injury, or even don't meet the physical standards (but have passed the initial selection standards), they will try and get you upto the standards, either to join the marines, or if not, finds you a place in other corps.

Although I’m not the biggest fan of Collins for personal reasons, he has a point with regard to the outcome of the ‘investigation’ into the allegations of bullying. Ethically it is unacceptable to expect the same body accused of bullying, to also conduct the investigation. Clear conflict of interest, it should be conducted by an independent authority.

2:37 damn, that's so friggin powerful and something that would be an incredible motivator for the lads. This conflict was *NEVER* the West vs Afghanistan... but rather the West vs the oppression of Afghanistan. It makes me quite sad that the Taliban have now taken control of the country, and that Afghan citizens have to deal with those barbaric lowlifes controlling their entire lives. Also, I absolutely loved the adopted "British doggy" and how the soldiers are able to have some form of affection in such an environment just like they would back home. It's also nice that the dogs instantly trusted them, that speaks volumes about the character of these squaddies as human beings as dogs are often very perceptive and a good judge of character. Bless Tanghi, I love how he also kept watch on patrol 😂👍

Cant help comparing my days at Lympstone in 1965 compared to now , if you failed , you failed. . I didn't . Those who did fail accepted it . The difference in modern Britain and then. The self righteous has neve been a commando attitude. Good on the media for giving this person all the attention as usual. These men are being prepared for war with an enemy . I never expected to find such self publicist in the Royal Marines , an attitude not British.

Tangi is adorable and sweet I hope that he stayed safe. Reminds me of the wolf in Dances with Wolves. What a beautiful temperament. As for Adam Collins - well, if he wound up serving two tours in Afghanistan, no one can say he only did it for his career. Maybe it was the end goal but he got there through bravery hard work and some luck. I mean some of the soldiers are done by 40-45 and they have to do something else with the rest of their lives. It's not a bad thing to look ahead and have a plan. RIP Orlando Rogers.

This is NOT meant as an insult to our American allies, but at 14.38, we can see why we - The British - often have a better rapport with foreign nationals. Call it Bull-Sh*T, call it a 'Hearts and Minds' excercise.... It works. :-)
@boblewin70999 жыл бұрын
+George Buller - I agree with you. As a now "retired US Marine", one of our great (but few) successes in Vietnam had been a program called the Combined Action Program in which we inserted a squad of Marine riflemen with interpreter into a civilian hamlet to assist them in protecting and defending their hamlet against the Viet Cong.The genesis of this program was based upon the (Wikipedia data) British Army in India (19th century) leaning towards "brigading" - the insertion of some troops with the native population's defenders. This was a very successful program for the British in India and the US Marine Corps. On a similar vein but larger scale, the US Army's Special Forces had the same successes in VN as the Marine Corps.The British Marines are probably one of the best or best trained special units in the world. In my opinion, their training is nonpareil.

I feel bad for not remembering his name because it was so long ago but its a shame he had to go through that. I can't stand bullying, people who bully others need a size 10 up there arses.

19:28 brings back real memories. I got a radio call once to help US troops engaging insurgents in a nearby tree line. This is the problem with the current generation, if someone does something to them that they don't like it's bullying. Bullying is bad and it should be stopped, but because it's in the news everyday it's buried into the mind and used as an excuse for everything. Collins was a show off and thought he was going to just breeze through training because he was a "stunt man"!! The ideal kind of person that makes it through SF training is the unassuming quiet kid. He's not muscle bound or loud mouthed. He follows instructions and wants to help his fellow trainee. Collins fit none of these!
@MissJessyeNorman10 жыл бұрын
Yes, and his end goal of being a stuntman rather than a marine DID affect his training, because mindset is more important than physical ability. He said it himself, he didn't like he cold and wet, and he had a hard time forcing himself to stay engaged in those bad conditions. You do have to have a certain amount of physical health and athletic ability--but often the big muscle bound guy will be gone in a second, and the smaller guy, who is totally committed, and knows how to manage his emotions and thoughts, is the one who not only gets through it, but shows great aptitude for this sort of thing. It's unglamorous work for the most part--so you really have to want to do it. He wants it to be on his CV/resume, because it looks tough and cool. I wouldn't want to be putting my life in the hands of someone who was there for a resume boost.

Its a very good discussion between the line of training effectiveness and when a trainee believes they are poorly treated (in this case claiming victimisation). As an officer its such a hard balance. You trust your NCOs to do the best they can (if not you'd have wrecked them a long time ago) yet you can't throw away the claims until an actual investigation is done.... ...at the end of the day, if the NCOs think they're right, and yet the trainee is proven correct in the claim of victimisation. As an officer...its you. The officer is the problem. Obviously it may be an NCO or actually anyone in the training system (dont want to say that only NCOs can be the issue when actually the case its others) that is undertaking the behaviour but as the officer of the unit, if its got the this point and hasn't been identified...you're a shitty officer.

@Ukraineaissance20144 жыл бұрын
bullpups have longer barrels than most, including the british SA80. They had to redesign the accuracy exam criteria when it came out because it was so accurate and the muzzle velocity is relatively high. I believe they usually train for shooting around 400 metres but you could get shots in twice that far with some practise and care. Theres the LSW version as well which has an even longer barrel- it tends to be used as a sniper spotters weapon or snipers backup due to its good range capabilities.
