The phrase you mention was coined by Penn Jillette. Source: The Show Doctor - Page 128.

As a hobbyist I find this concept for paid performing magicians very intriguing. If you do magic as a paid job then obviously you shouldn’t be turning down ANY opportunity.I would of thought having a commando set up ready to go is extremely logical.Fascinating to see how performing paid magicians have to be set up ready to go at a moments notice,on top of the presumed booked up gigs.I have the greatest of respect for these wonderful professionals.Very interesting.Thank You.

I am a hobbyist as well and to be honest the concept might not only apply to professional magicians. We had a similar discussion yesterday on the regular table for magicians where one person pointed out as well if you want to be considered as a magician you should be ready to perform. You might be approached by people asking you to perform and then it is a good thing if you can show something. This does not mean that you have to jam for them for hours but you should be able to do at least 1 or 2 effects. Therefore it is always a good idea to not leave the house without any form of minor preparation ( e.g. a card in your wallet , or rubberbands or a deck of cards in your pocket) Maybe this is the commando show for the amateur xD

sooo in the first volume of Jeff´s Magic on stage, he credits this concept to Penn and Teller, but i belive that jeff is the one that has popularized the term and used a lot even for some lecture notes

@Mo the magic man I didn’t see the clip but even if I had the great thing about magic is the childlike wonder it can produce. It sounds like you are experiencing that wonder and that is a good thing

Yes sir your act should be ready to roll..and as a magician be ready with nothing..use your sleight of hand and improv always carry a thumbtip...
