What's up guys! Jeff from Sorta Healthy here!
Have you ever wondered where you should work as a personal trainer? It's an interesting topic because it can have a huge effect on your entire career.
Unfortunately, many personal trainers will quit in their first year on the job. This is due to a number of different reasons. Pay issues, unrealistic job expectations, and weird working hours all come to mind.
In this video we aim to give you, the trainer, a good idea of the pros and cons of some different location types. Some location types you could work at as a trainer include: working in a commercial gym, working in a private studio, training clients in their homes, training clients on cruise ships, training clients as an independent contractor, training clients virtually, and doing more traditional online coaching.
As to where you specifically should work when looking at all of those different options, well, that does depend on you. What is your experience level? Are you outgoing and good with people? How confident are you when it comes to closing sales?
All of these things, as well as a few others, will determine where you should start out as a trainer. Also, many of these things will determine what trainer career path is best for you.
In this video we are not discussing individual gym brands in too much detail. We are focusing on what type of location you should consider, type being the key word there. Analyzing each major gym company is something that I want to do on this channel though. So, if you work for a major gym franchise such as Anytime Fitness, or Equinox, and you want to appear in a KZbin video, and talk about your job, let me know in the comments!
I really appreciate all of the love and support! You guys are the best!
Jeff and Alexis

I think it also depends on how much you want to do as a trainer and who you want to help. Commercial gyms are great if you want a career in management, private studios I find are good if you want to be independent and set your own schedule. I have worked in both. Now I stick with online coaching and occasionally I will do some in-home training. I like online coaching because I enjoy writing plans but I don’t really enjoy in-person training. There’s lots of people who just want someone to give them workout plans and accountability.

Saying this here so you can see it, your channel deserves to be promoted by pt courses, I don’t think I would feel as comfortable and confident as a trainer if I didn’t have your videos to use as a study method along side my one study’s in NASM. I want you to know your work doesn’t go unnoticed, I recommend your chancel all the time and have been linking your videos in my references guide to my clients to better understand there muscles. Your a pro and your doing gods work for the Persoanl training community. Planning on consistently donating when I make the right money flow and able to donate a hefty amount. This is great and timely advice as I just completed my NASM cert. I think for my goals and interests, the smaller size studio with training from someone experienced will be ideal. My friend works out at a big box gym and said the trainers there are "friendly" focused on personality more than training. It sounds like his gym only has equipment, the trainers do minimal assessments, and move frequently to other locations. So I'm assuming that they are as new as I would be, focused on selling basic training sessions and probably might not be the best place for to learn from someone else. Thanks again for posting these video's, they have been extremely helpful!

I really appreciate your videos! They have been so helpful for me as a new trainer! Have you considered making a video about recognizing red flags in a job interview for a personal trainer job? I unfortunately just quit my first personal trainer job after about a year due to several factors including being paid late multiple times, receiving no support from management despite being the only trainer. I want to make sure I get in a better situation with my next job and think it could help other new trainers

Thank you for all the content ❤ I have one question: Is it necessary to study exercise science to become a personal trainer (sorry for my english)
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 3 ай бұрын
Thanks for the support! It’s not necessary to study exercise science in a college setting. Most of the best trainers I’ve known haven’t gone to college for exercise science or anything like that. That said, it’s still a good idea to have a good overall knowledge of exercise science and related things. Starting with a base certification and becoming a solid lifter definitely gets you moving in the right direction.

I am a certified yoga therapist specializing in back pain management and currently looking to expand my qualifications by pursuing a Certified Personal Trainer (CPT) program. My goal is to enhance my skill set and secure better job opportunities, ideally with a high-paying salary. However, I am unsure which CPT program would be the best fit for my career goals. I would greatly appreciate your guidance on selecting a program that is well-recognized, offers excellent career prospects, and aligns well with my expertise in back pain therapy. Thank you in advance for your assistance.

Great video, Jeff! I have two questions: 1. Do you allow your trainers to train their own separate clients online? For example, say they know someone who lives out of state. Is it OK for them to train those people online without involving you or do you have rules against doing that? Non-competes, etc.? 2. Do you give any bonuses to your trainers who bring extra clients into your facility? I was a personal trainer several years ago and am contemplating getting back into the business. Any thoughts you can give would be great. Love all of your stuff on KZbin!
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation

Thanks for your support! Good questions! The answer to both of these questions is yes. We allow trainers to train online as long as they are not taking clients from us/the studio. We give a percentage of the training package to a trainer if they bring in a client.

I actually just started working as a personal trainer for Crunch Fitness a little over a year ago. First time as one, and my current experience may not represent what it's like working here since my APT Manager hates her job. Still like it though, especially since we're mostly independent, and the GM and APT Manager sources clients for us, mostly.

Slightly off topic question but I want to get certified and have watched your videos and countless reviews elsewhere. What are your opinions on ACTION certificate and my chances of getting hired with it at a typical gym? Otherwise I was thinking of just doing ACE but it's about $500 more. I don't have the most money to blow so I am choosing the best bang for my buck. I also get the vibe that it ultimately does not matter as much as I am making it. Thanks for all your info.
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation
@SortaHealthyTrainerEducation 8 ай бұрын
I have heard mixed things about ACTION. Honestly, you’re mostly right, your certification doesn’t matter that much. That said, unfortunately, many places won’t hire you unless you have one of the big 4 certs: ACE, ACSM, NASM, NSCA

Try to explain the value in you having a trainer. Just because you have one now doesn’t mean you need to work with one forever. Maybe you all decide on a budget or time frame that you can work with one to learn and perfect your form, make progress and learn how to do things on your own later.
