best speedrun commentary i've seen (along with malleo's commentaries). i like that you pause to explain what's happening rather than playing the video out in real time and missing half of the explanation, which is the typical approach.

Surprised this doesn't have more views or anything. This is a great video, you do a great job of explaining what you're doing as you're doing it, even going as far as to display what's happening in the code. Probably hasn't been seen as much because it's in a bit of an unpopular category for OoT Speedrunning.

Why does an illuminated bush appear in the lost woods at 10;00;20 - 10;00;22 (1 frame). I've always seen it in speedruns but I never know why it's there.
@Jelster646 жыл бұрын
nathnolt You know the tree with the target that you're supposed to shoot for the bullet bag upgrade? There's a Deku Scrub on top of that tree. That Deku Scrub spawns when that part of the scene is loaded. However, before the game places the Deku Scrub in its proper location, it spawns at coordinates 0,0,0. That's what you see; the Deku Scrub spawning at 0,0,0 before the game places it in its proper location one frame later.

Great job on the run, the commentary, and video edit. It is super cool. Thank you for the shoutouts it's amazing. I'll add to that a few people who did a TON of work on this category during and before my era: AutoC, EverAlert, Zaccio. Also a few words:yea i've been spinning for 13years so its a thing lol. And i never did megasidehop in lostwoods because it was timed to be slower and my own timing confirmed it so i didn't check further (slower from movement to the ladder iirc but i probably just sucked) And there's a big strat you didn't do and that's bomb oi for magic, would saves 12s unbuffered (bit less if you replace hess in tower i'm not sure about bomb count routing) Anyway GG
@Jelster647 жыл бұрын
If you're talking about bomb OI to play ZL: can't do that because you gotta RBA the saw first. If you're talking about bomb OI to play prelude: savewarp is faster because you won't have to watch the warp song cutscene and you have to do a bunch of equips anyway. And thank you :>
@gollumsk87 жыл бұрын
aaah right ! forgot the saw rba lol
@evilagram7 жыл бұрын
Just a random guess, but I think the reason bomb hovering works is because of the way you can't fall off platforms in ISG. Basically, in most 3d games, there's different physics modes for being grounded, in the air, or swimming. When in the grounded mode, gravity is disabled and you move attached to the ground plane. This helps keep collisions simple, since the ground is a plane instead of solid object (easier to collision check against, means you don't need special workarounds for slopes, generally simplifies a fuckton of things if you handle movement this way). Then gravity is re-enabled when you go off a ledge or otherwise are no longer touching the ground plane. During sword slashes, link steps forward a tiny bit, so they disabled your ability to leave the ground plane and enter air physics while slashing, so you don't accidentally slash too close to a ledge and fall off. ISG cancels the animation before the hitbox canceling effect is applied, and probably before this ledge drop prevention code is canceled either, so both remain in effect. From there, shielding in the air probably returns you to a grounded state, which then normally detects that you have no ground beneath you, returning you to a falling state, but ISG interferes by saying that you cannot enter a falling state from a grounded state, thus resulting in bomb hovering. This is just a guess on my part based on a knowledge of how games generally work, I don't know if this is how OoT actually handles it.

Chris Wagar This seems accurate. I've asked a few people who gave me somewhat similar, but much less detailed explanations, all of which seem to be derived from this concept. Thanks for wording it so well.

Kind of ironic how your WR that stood for a year or so got beaten within a day of you releasing this truely astounding commentary. Great job! OoT's ruleset will always give room for discussion cause of how insanely broken the game is nowadays. I think for the most part the community made reasonable decisions to make categories both enjoyable and not to similar to each other.

Awesome video! Could you explain why it's not possible to RBA the medallions needed for the bridge to appear? That would eliminate the need for the hover. I'm not an OOT player so there's probably something easy that I'm missing.

That is possible. In fact, that's what the old route did. Hovering is just a lot faster than going all the way to Gerudo Valley to get the Broken Sword for that RBA.

57:36 - can we please have an explanation of the "Link's Fatness" variable?
@Jelster647 жыл бұрын
Not 100% sure, but I think Skater found that memory address when he was messing with Blank A back in 2014 (Blank A is a 1.0-exclusive glitch that makes Link's hitbox a lot smaller, allowing him to walk under certain objects and some more fuckery). He also found the memory address for Link's height. If you want a more certain answer, ask Skater.

Please edit and give commentary to every single category, thanks ;) And while at it, do the same for every single game that has been speedrun. And their categories. Thanks. You're not completely accurate in your power crouch stab explanation, it would be better to say that crouch stabbing doesn't overwrite the damage value, so it repeats the previously set value.
@Jelster646 жыл бұрын
nathnolt Is that so? Unfortunately I don't know how to look into the game's code, I just understand glitches through trial and error and staring at memory addresses.

There's a fun thing to do with this: slashing stick and then crouch stabbing anything to get a wood effect on stones, pots wont break from it or use isg to keep getting the effect.

I'm one of the guys that cringe at "any version officially released by Nintendo is equally legitimate for speedruns". I'm actually fine with VC-only or GC-ony routes, but they are not so much version differences as emulation differences -- since the Virtual Console is just an emulator, actually. What bothers me is people considering Nintendo-made emulators to be "canon", but rejecting runs made on emulators that are more accurate to the N64 than VC.

Wrong Warping (WW) is banned. This includes: -Triggering a blue warp, then killing yourself or leaving the area in order to skip a cutscene or warp to another location. -Whether the blue warp wrong warps to another location or not, blue warp manipulation is banned entirely Nonsense ruling. Apparently all wrong warps aside from Blue Warps are allowed? Of course if you were to try a run like that they'd pull the rug out from underneath you. I still can't figure out how it makes any sense for void warp to be allowed but blue warp CS skip to be banned. To me they go together as affects of combining loading zones together in ways that don't result in you appearing in totally the wrong area. With minigame wrong warp, Zelda's escape wrong warp, and others, it's clear that blue warps don't really fit as the target of that ban.
@Txrje7 жыл бұрын
Void Warp doesn't bring you to the wrong area though, only te coordinates of where you spawn in that area are changed. It's still the same area.
@canadianstickdeath7 жыл бұрын
Blue Warp CS Skip (that is to say, Shadow, Spirit, etc.) doesn't bring you to the wrong area either; even the coordinates are correct. That was part of my point was that it doesn't make sense for that to be banned while void warp is unbanned. They should both be banned or not, together.
@Acermax7 жыл бұрын
Well, it does bring you to the wrong area. You end up at the begining of the dungeon instead of the pad outside. Anyway, the rules are clear, if you don't like them just make a new category and play it.
@canadianstickdeath7 жыл бұрын
It's no more of a wrong area than Zelda's Lullaby cutscene skip not bringing you out into Hyrule Field. If the rules are so clear, try doing a Zelda's Escape or minigame wrong warp in a run and see how that gets received...
@Acermax7 жыл бұрын
Zelda's escape, Epona minigame or Zelda's Courtyard WW are banned. "Wrong Warping is banned. This includes triggering a blue warp then killing yourself or leaving the area in order to skip a cutscene or warp to another location." Warp to another location to do a wrong warp is explicitly banned.
