This is a great game: until move 19 Magnus had virtual nothing, but then the power play starts (supported by Ivanchuk, who suddenly became very passive on the queen side). Lack of counter play allowed Magnus to expand on the king side, forcing black to weaken king safety, until Magnus achieved an advanced passer with decisive advantage.

Yes. I felt so much better that you mentioned the propriety of Nxe4 (5:04). And the briefly pinned knight can be defended not only by the f4 pawn as you mentioned, but also Bf5. I just couldn’t figure out what would be wrong with Nxe4. After Bf5 the Queen can move to eliminate the pin. This line was not addressed at all on another very good chess channel and I kept thinking, “What am I missing?” That pawn was essentially what caused so many problems for Ivanchuk, and it could have been eliminated without detriment. But I am not close to being a grandmaster, so I’m sure Ivanchuk saw something.

Yes, I analysed it with stockfish. nxe4......Re1..,.bf5...Nc3...re8....Nxn.....bxN....Nd2....f5.....Nxe4 (if f3....rad8....Qc4+...qe6 almost equal) fe4 slight advantage for black.

The game is just minutes over and you have a video. Well done and thank you, I was keen to see more reasoning supporting Vasyl's resignation. Tomorrow sees Vasyl playing white.

At around 41:07 on the board for Vasyl, why would he put the black Queen on b4 hitting the white a and b pawns simultaneously? Rook can only defend one. If a pawn moves up to a5 threatening knight, knight can move to a4 and be traded for rook piece if captures. Am I missing something?

pon to b4 from Magnus is probably the best move even if it blocks his own rook, but why not exchange rook by playing rook to C4 instead ? if you are going to block your own rook why not echange it for your opponent's rook which might still be a usefull piece for him instead ?
@epicchess2021 Жыл бұрын
Yeah was also a good move and I think top engine line. I guess he get the rook was clumsy there for black so left it
