Today we discuss the cost of commercial CNC routers along with all the different CNC machines Tyler has had in his business. He's had one Laguna CNC and 7 Homag CNCs. He currently has 4 Homag CNCs, three vertical and one horizontal. He also has a bunch of other Homag equipment. I think he's a bit of a junkie.

You two are a good team. Lot’s of good information without excessive attempts at humour. Refreshing.

I bought a two year old 4x8 Laguna SmartShop2 SUV (MSRP about 60k) for $15k from an auction. Has a 12HP spindle, ATC, and vacuum table. It's a great machine, I've milled wood, aluminum, and plastic on it. Especially now with so many people retiring or shops going under, auctions are a nice way to find decent used equipment for low prices. I picked it up myself two states away with a truck and trailer. Driving through the mountains with that thing was a challenge but I saved a couple thousand bucks. I started out with a 3d printer & a Shapeoko. Hopefully I'll work my way up to as nice a shop setup as Tyler one day 🙂

I have a small architectural woodwork shop with the same equipment as you. I love the videos! I'm curious what the role of your CNC operator is? Are they constantly monitoring the machine while it is running? I have my operator pretty much at the machine all day and sometimes there is some real lack of utilization of my operator and I'm afraid it bores them and they lose focus! Thanks for sharing all your videos. Maybe I will upload some. Would love feedback as I am still new to this!

My question for the Lean Brothers is, who helped create the flow of your shop?

Would it make more sense to buy smaller machines to fit a particular purpose or keep buying larger machines? For example if you are working on cabinet doors just doing hardware routing would a smaller CNC make more sense? Although you have had good uptime on your machines, how do you handle potential downtime?

How did you gain the extra business to make the jump from the laguna to the homags? Do you make cabinet parts for a larger company or do you make custom kitchens and do the entire installation?
@lean-brothers
@lean-brothers Жыл бұрын
We'll get a video recorded on it. As for the other questions. Tyler does work for his own installs and for other cabinet companies. It's also split between commercial and residential. Tyler didn't always do others cabinets and he also stopped doing install at one point but is doing it again. We'll record a video on that too.

I wuld say buy a little more than you can afford. becouse ewery new machine transforms your way of doing things as you were doing it before. I bought 2 years ago 5axis Nesting CNC machine manual loading automatic offloading from Holzher. This alone was game changer for us then this year we installed second machine 5 axis nesting with atomatic loading and labeling in front and then automatic offloading. and we tought it wont be such a different way. it is quite diferent way of preparing programs and it is way faster machine than manual loding as on our other machine. and bonus it is that one operater is runing this 2 machines. I lowe your content I can realy corelate I have a little smaller shop but with similar problems. I have request. Can you show us your managing softwer or procedure. We as woodworkers at least here in Slovenia dot have much support and knowledge from dewelopers and sales persons for softwear side of managing. I am realy strugling
