Commercial hand line Fishing for mackerel From Newlyn In Cornwall || Small Boat, Sustainable Fishing

In this video I steam out into Mounts Bay to try and catch some mackerel, to catch the mackerel I use 25 hooks and use A very old technique called the Cornish loop what is a very efficient way of fishing still to this day. After I had finished fishing I land the fish Into Newlyn fish market to be sold the next morning.
Sadly due to the fishing at the wrong tides there was not much fish around
compared to the morning on that day so I had to just pick away at what was there.

Good to see a 'ringer' after all these years. We used to look down from on the high deck of 'Mezzie' a 'frenchman' as Penberth men 'ringed' in circles around the Runnelstone with a broomstick with a nail atop for the curtain ring. 'We' were four-handed & held the fish well as a result, but 'Ringo' & the like did as well man for man 'ringin'. We'd get (1975/6/7/8/9) c. 40p. per STONE then.........ripped RIGHT off of course. Plenty of 'mad dogs' in the shoals then....i.e. 1~3+ pounders. I'm almost 82 now & STILL shake off max. in my sleep at times!

GOT TO REMEMBER, 20 CM MINIMUM LAND SIZE FOR MACKEREL IN CORNWALL... I ALWAYS THINK ITS CRAZY, I CAN BUY 20 CM MACKEREL FROM A SHOP, THAT HAVE BEEN LANDED IN CORNWALL, TO USE AS BAIT TO CATCH FISH IN THE N/E OF ENGLAND... BUT WHILE FISH, IF I CATCH A MACKEREL UNDER 30 CM, I HAVE TO RETURN IT TO THE NORTH SEA, DUE TO THE NEIFCA BYELAWS... GREAT TO SEE YOUNGER PEOPLE GETTING INTO COMMERCIAL FISHING

Good for you mate, going into fishing at your age. There's one young fisherman where I live (Petty Harbour, Newfoundland), and one or two in their 40s but most are over 60. Do you get a better price for hand-lined mackerel than gill netted?

This is such a nice way of fishing. Because the line don't stay to long in the water any bycatches stay alive and can be manually and quickly released. And the fishes don't stay on the hook for hours or die slowly by lack of oxygen or compression in a net so I bet the fish quality must be excellent!

Where i live fishermen can ask £3 plus for a mackerel and get that amount. I catch them from the shore and am happy to give them away
