Wow , kind of different than the way I torch. I will need to get my video going on my next torch down job. For when I want to seal the torch down to edge metal I would instal about a 6 inch strip of torch down first , then metal , then the top layer. So I'm sandwiching the metal to the touchdown.
@bobbarker99863 жыл бұрын
I used to do that too with 9" strips but it doesn't really work as great as it sounds because to get the strip hot enough to melt the torch to the back of the metal you end up putting too much heat on the metal and it warps. I guess even if you don't melt the first layer to the metal but the 2 layers melt together if water gets under the top layer it will be forced to go out to the edge of the roof under the metal instead of leaking and if you fold the base sheet over the edge it will be forced off the roof I think. At least that was my thinking.
@kevinwaller63533 жыл бұрын
@@bobbarker9986, put a strip granule side down and nail it on and then sandwich your metal. It won't require as much heat.
@bobbarker99863 жыл бұрын
@@kevinwaller6353 yes that's what I'm saying. but even better than that is to use smooth so there are no granules at all. Melt the smooth to the base sheet prior to installing the metal. Then melt the two sheets together, but to get the bottom piece to melt to the bottom of the metal it still takes enough heat to warp the metal but it usually straightens out once it cools.

Whats to stop roof from blowing off cause u did not put enough plates. Another thing i have never seen no company put this system over rocks. We usually either rip it or suck rocks off and use rubber with polyiso.
@FlatRoofDoctor4 жыл бұрын
You are just someone taking orders. Monkey do what monkey see or told. This is a self-adhering base. No need for your "plates and screws". Also even if it was the system you think it should be, base paper with plate and screws, then the only reason why a roof would ever get blown of by wind is if it could get under the membrane. So if the edges were totally loose, and a little wind could sneak in under, it would start lifting and become a huge sail. Yes, you are right, you don't know much. I thought I was one of the first to go over the stone. I came across a few roofs that were done like that 30 years before I did it. The method you describe is 3 x more costly, and there is no reason if the substrate is still in good shape. In fact, it is far better than what you are used to. The stone act as insulation. The air trapped between the stone is a natural I isolation and also allowing moisture to move out to the sides. This type of system is a huge benefit. I guess you also don't use the ceramic granular surface, just the smooth. My suggestion is to become the best in what you do, instead of becoming a critique. You will never amount to anything critiquing others and yet you are not the best. All I do is Torch Down for the last 35 years. I don't do shingles, EPDM, TPO or metal. @FlatRoofDoctor4 жыл бұрын
Sure, that is what everyone does. But, the recovery board becomes a problem when it gets wet for one reason or another, either rotting, getting soggy, letting the fasteners holding the recovery board poking up through the membrane. With this method, there is air trapped among the stone allowing to air out whatever moist is trapped. And should there ever be a leak for one reason or another, the membrane will not be compromised and any leak could be taken care off.
@kevinwaller63533 жыл бұрын
@@FlatRoofDoctor, you can't convince me that the rocks will not penetrate that roof by walking on it. If you're concerned about recovery board getting wet at some point then use fan fold polystyrene insulation that is not affected by moisture and on top of it all it is not secured to the building. Interesting video. When you install edge metal, you are using gravel stop on here, there should be a 10 in. strip of smooth torched to perimeter first, then flashing nailed. Next the flashing should be primed with asphalt roof primer. The quick dry spray is best. Then you torch your finish ply on to that so that your metal ia always sandwiched between 2 layers. All cant and protrusion areas should also be double with the finish ply. I believe the Karnak you use on flashing is for SBS cold application, not APP torch application.
@FlatRoofDoctor3 жыл бұрын
Ok, that is all your opinion and what you have been taught. I agree to "sandwich the metal edging" The Karnak is not for SBS only. If you read on the label it is called "Modified Bitumen Adhesive". The Karnak is better than any sprayed on Asphalt roof primer. The Asphalt roof primer is just a very thin layer of the Karnak. It is not even close as good. To apply heat to the metal edging is wrong. That is why I don't torch or use a flame to attach the membrane to the metal. I apply a thick coat of Karnak Adhesive to the metal that will prevent the flame from getting to it and then melt the membrane slightly to burn the plastic protection so as to stick it to the adhesive. This is a trick I started 30 years ago and has not failed me yet.

First....rip off old roof....lay your base to all perimeters and crease over fascia 2". Is there a trick on how to keep the roll straight When is a long distance?
@FlatRoofDoctor4 жыл бұрын
When you apply heat to the roll, one tends to put more heat on the side where the overlapping seam is. because of that, the material expands more on one side than the other. Overheating the seam could cause the membrane to go on a turn

I have used 3 ply modified bitumen that has gravel on top and I guess the material you used is the same minus the gravel. Why is it necessary to put down fiberglass sheet over the old gravel and over that base sheet and modified bitumen; why not skip the fiberglass sheet? Or can you skip the first two coverings and just applied the modified bitumen roll over the old gravel?
@FlatRoofDoctor5 жыл бұрын
Ok, I am a little confused at what you are saying and asking: 1. "I have used 3 ply modified bitumen that has gravel on top" Does "gravel" mean "ceramic granules"? 3 Ply - what is each layer consist of? 2. The reason I install a "fiber base" not "fiberglass"(it is a specially designed fiber asphalt saturated paper for torch down) is because: a) it provide a smooth surface over the gravel roof b) it prevents sharp edges from piercing to the cap sheet c) it is a stiffener for the system - meaning it helps keep the cap sheet from making creases. 3. You can never install a Modified Bitumen Torch Down membrane by itself. It will start getting wrinkles over time. You need a backing like a fiber base paper 4. "I guess the material you used is the same minus the gravel" I don't understand this part of your statement either. I am confused at what you call "gravel."
@Henry-gb8cl5 жыл бұрын
@@FlatRoofDoctor Sorry about the confusion, let me clear it up. I meant ceramic granules and not gravel. I was covering over an old modified bitumen covering that had faded white ceramic granules on top. First, I laid down a flame resistant fiberglass base sheet and fastened it to the old covering with nails with square plates on top and torched down a new modified bitumen membrane with white ceramic granules for top cover. I was referring to the new membrane as a 3 ply, only because the label on the product said, "Tri-Ply APP membrane-maybe I am wrong. I spent 2K just on materials and the roof is still leaking, a lot less, but leaking and I noticed creases, or wrinkles developing on the new covering. Did I do it wrong? I did learn a lot from your other videos on how to find and fix leaks from flashing and around pipe/vent openings. Thank you!

Thank you. I am on a 120 000 sq ft job now where I have the opportunity to make videos of different facets of torch down roofing. This will include how to install Torch Down and tie it into a cast iron drain, field torching, my approach on how to get rid of pooling water, some detail work around curbs and vent flashing, and maybe a drip edge installation detail. My way of doing the described stuff above is different than most other roofers. I hope to get these videos edited and posted in the next couple of months. But thanks for the compliment

Everything looks super clean and well done but your gonna burn the home down without an extinguisher. Having that gravel bed helps but that flame lick is going to find a dry spot and it’s over. I have been torching Modified since 1992 and we always used a 43 pound mineral anchor sheet with Modified mid ply and MF white cap, if I ever did this without an extinguisher id have my liability insurance cancelled.

In my honest opinion , you should be using a asphalt primer on the metal and not roofing cement ! This will most likely cause the roof to fail ! I’ve done torch down for over 25 years now and I’m a member of Roofer Union in Chicago out of Local# 11 , Roofers and Waterproofers ! I enjoy watching your videos, keep up the great work ! GOD Bless 🙏🏻🙏🏻

Hey Deno - You are correct, asphalt primer is the way to go. What you don't have right is you call it "roofing cement". That is the junk most roofers use. I have never and will never ever use roofing cement on any roof. Karnak 81 is not roofing cement. Karnal 81 Trowel Grade has the same components as Karnaks asphalt primer. I have been using it for 30 years and never had a problem. I have never used roofing cement in my life. Thank you anyway for bringing that out. It is a good observation and a good tip from you. Use Asphalt primer if you plan to torch and melt straight to metal. (very difficult to do, need to nail the drip edge every 3") In my case, we don't torch to the metal but instead, we use Modified Bitumen Adhesives from Karnak. Thanks again for your input - it is much appreciated

I would normally use a cane to pull my roll instead of walking on it. If you tried that on a hot summer day your cap will end up with footprints (if torched properly). Pulling instead of kicking the roll allows you to control the flame and hit all areas of the roll and the base layer underneath evenly. This roof will be covered in Blisters (air pockets under the cap due to lack of heat and adhesion. The biggest mistake in this video is torching to plastic cement(mastic,bitumin,sopramastic)
@FlatRoofDoctor4 жыл бұрын
You need the cane instead. You are correct, if you use GAF or Carlisle products, they are way to soft to walk on while torching. If you have enough experience you know which products are good to use. Experience is what you need. To much talk doesn't get you much. In this video we are torching to a MB base that is meant for torching. John Mansfield Dynagrip. Too little knowledge too much bark makes for a Puffed up head

@@dogtaxi812 30 years of successful experience is not to be laughed at.If you’re concerned about moisture then simply add some breather vents…About 20 years ago I was asked to appear on a GAF video introducing Grand Sequoia, a presidential copy, they were thrilled with the roof until I told them it would flop, the GAF “experts”weren’t happy with me..I’d suggested an optional 5”/15” type side lap like presidential, they wouldn’t listen until a year latter when they called me to say they were going ahead with my suggestion…So much for the Experts..

How much would you charge in labor on something like this?
@FlatRoofDoctor5 жыл бұрын
Depending on a lot of factors. If it is a plain roof with no preparation and you could start torching almost right away, then around $5 p sq ft. That includes the material - Self adhering base, Cap sheet with granules and commercial drip edge. That is the basis, but then other factors must be taken into account. The bigger the the roof. the less per square feet. More obstacles, the more per sq ft. Then also, the area where you are. If you are in a city, like New York, or in Connecticut, then the price almost doubles. If you work in small towns across America, then the price goes down. I hope you get the idea.
@johnlieb15 жыл бұрын
u really should remove the rock so u can repair any defects in the field of the old roof.
@FlatRoofDoctor5 жыл бұрын
There were no defects. You can tell from looking inside the building up. Your thoughts are most common to many as you. As long as there is a nice solid flat surface, I don't see why you can't install a roof over it. Your thought is to remove a solid flat surface to another solid surface (the substrate) to install a new roof. That is the most common thinking. But always more costly too. If the cost was not the issue, we might as well remove the entire structure and start over again. What about specs where they require 4 -5 layers of Torch Down? Your thought would be it can't be done? BTW, I appreciate your comment. I am just trying to let you see it is not always necessary to remove a layer of roofing.
