I'm 62, been learning for 1 year and can now converse with Francophiles, great fun and good for an old brain. No downsides. Thanks

i started learning French at 50 from "niveau zero", currenty I speak the language with some faciltiy. Right now, I'm spending time in "my" town in the Auvergne, most people don't speak English here, and they really appreciate an American speaking their language. Also, I will swear, you can't convince me otherwise, learning French made me more intelligent. During my career I was a programmer, and as i was learning French, complicated problems became much easier to solve. Even extracurricular intrests in math and physics all of a suden became clear. Learning French is one the best decisions I have ever made.

🫶🏼From California😊

The songs from Les Miserables are available on you tube in French, some are subtitled, J’avai révé is far better than the English version (I Dreamed a dream) imho.

Yes. If you don't start early enough it's very difficult to ever fully understand fast spoken French. After ten years I can still barely understand a word they're saying. But to be honest I would have problems understanding my own mother tongue if someone were to speak with mouth full of marbles (which is how french sounds to me).

I started after a mini stroke, yes to exercise my brain and work my memory but also to enjoy French films and drama on “All 4” which hosts “Walter Presents” a rich collection of European drama, I would love to watch Spiral (Engrenagé) again sans sous titles.

Spiral illustrates one of Géraldine's main points. I find that I can understand most of the formal French used by the lawyers, but I definitely need the sous titres for the swift slangy French of the cops, the criminals and the ordinary Parisians.

@ I absolutely loved Spiral and watched the entire series for years, so sad when it ended but at least Gilou and Laure got it together in the end. The Guardian published a light hearted glossary of the French slang and swear words they used during the final series which was very helpful 🤣🤣

@@michgreeno1 I missed that, but I'll look for it on the Guardian website. I loved the programme too, but was always a bit sad that my favourite character Frédéric or "Tintin" left in a rather unsatisfactory way.

Just listening and understanding a few songs in french , of understanding the difference between "pour an empire je ne peux devetir" and " d'shabiille moi" something which unfortunately even native french people do not grasp, the reading of just the first canto of " les chants de maldoror" written by a teenager of towering genius, A few poems by another teenager Arthur Rimbaud all these are like windows which show the sea of commoness that envelopes the human race.Opening these windows is well worth the effort of learning french not just ordering cofee or gossipping. Merci beaucoup

It’s a pity. I’m on the QLD border and teach 3 classes of seniors, some in their late 80s! Some of us had a cruise to New Caledonia and now we’re talking about an immersion weekend next year. Try U3A for classes for seniors and make friends too. Le français est une belle langue. Profitez-en😊.
