I like the idea/theory that Jurgen is at least somewhat aware that Cain's reputation is a bit overblown, but because Cain treats him like an actual person and he enjoys a much better quality of life than the average guardsman by being Cain's aide-de-camp, he just goes with it.

I'm so glad these novels were my introduction to 40k, along with Gaunt's ghosts. It's just so rare to get an actual PoV in 40k that isn't a brainwashed, homo-erotic (no problem with gays, just hate all the space marines dick riding each other and the primarchs) trans-human monster like we do with Cain. Every time he reflects on how fucked the situation would have been if it wasn't for his innate luck and the whole impostor syndrome complex he develops is dark in a comical way. I really like that the entire series is the personal memoirs of a jaded and tired man who's seen and done it all, being elaborated by an inquisitor with full access to the knowledge of the Imperium, something also unique for the setting. The Cain books do make the imperium seem a lot more reasonable on a lot of planets, so it actually keeps a good balance of satire and lets us root for the protagonists without coming off as pro-fascism. The main obstacle is almost always the dogmatic and militaristic elements within the various imperial factions and scheming politicians and not the evil aliens and cultist baddies. it's very much a nazis could have won ww2 if they weren't incompetent and blinded by hatred vibe. The way Guilliman operates in modern 40k is treated as something special and unknown, that he's a diplomat and a rational thinker, but some of the more human-centric 40k novels already have plenty of rational actors, diplomats, trade etc. Characters being forced to disobey orders and bypass the chain of command to avoid certain death due to the incompetence of the higher ups, often suffering immensely for doing the right thing, etc. I miss it.

What an amazing story, Cain’s stories capture the thrill of adventure against suspense of Danger. I like how Cain is smart and resourceful. To many Warhammer stories are shot Xenos and it’s over. Cain’s story captures a more interesting versions of the Imperium.

No putting down the delivery or quality of the video, as it's one of the best I've ever watched, though I find it a tad immersion breaking that the youtube lore voice of Cain is the same as Yarrick. He's usually seen as more of a Rowan Atkinson/Blackadder kinda guy, comically bad at putting on a show of being brave, friendly and modest, though still getting away with it because everyone has a highly idealised image of him. It's also a bit immersion breaking that his "young" voice is the old, grizzled veteran voice and his head voice is a young man, when the memoirs are written by him at over 200 years of age. The Cain and Amberley narrating the story are old, like pushing the limits of life extension technology old, but for the first 100 years at least they would have been very youthful. I think Aborder Prince's voice would have been perfect to narrate Cain's memoirs if they were swapped around.
