He made my friend stay up until 6AM ON STREAM while he nitpicked the art and forced him to change all the details, then took six months to actually pay him. once someone in my science class kept telling me to draw her and i'm just like "ok i will if you commission me, i don't do free art" and she was like wOAh seLFISH

i actually recently had a commissioner try and pull that bullshit with the whole "adding more details after the commission was already done" lol the reference they provided me with was pretty terrible. I mean absolutely AWFUL to start off with , but I did get the general idea of what the character was supposed to look like and they even laid out a few specific details to add before hand which made me think this would go pretty smoothly save for the 30 minutes i spent trying to decipher the god awful ref they gave me XD I know for a fact i drew the character correctly - if i had missed details or something I'd correct that immediately for free but this was not the case in this situation. after i sent the finished image they started off with how great it looked and how much they loved it but then immediately began asking for changes. they said i'd forgotten freckles - which as untrue - and that i didnt make them .. glitter??? which was not shown on the reference at all they said i drew the top wrong - also untrue. and some other things im not too sure what they were but it became apparent to me that this person obviously didnt have the character presented the way they actually WANTED IT to look on the reference and was trying to get me to change it for them. i told them very bluntly that I DID draw it as was presented on the reference , using all the visuals that were present on the cluttered thing to draw the character but I would change the things they requested for a small fee. the changes were pretty minuscule but I combine my layers upon finishing so it would have taken me some time to fix those things d: as i expected , they declined to pay the fee and begun to explain to me how i DIDNT draw it as it was presented on the reference - a blatant lie but what can you do lol the funniest part of it for me was how they immediately ended with "i dont want to start any drama so ill just take it as is and edit myself" i took great insult to this because i never allow anyone to edit my art for any reason. if they have a problem with something or want something changed , they must come to ME directly. I gave this person that chance and they refused me. moral of the story is - if they try to give you a shitty reference , do NOT accept lol only reason i did was because i was hungry that day XD

Boi I've had customers that want to change a million things and then others that give zero feedback and say "well I hate it redo it all" I usually don't get friendly with my customers but there are exceptions though rare. And when asked "can I get free art" I won't do it I'll do art for someone else who's been respectful and overall decent to prove a point. If you ask you won't receive, silence is golden. Won't lie friends do get free stuff from me usually when I'm bored. But great video its always interesting to hear others experiences.

Another thing that gets me is the people who commission me then don't have a clear idea of the character. Hear me out not opposed to helping them create their character and making they're oc visible but they only give you a vague description then a bunch of pictures of others oc's, animals and extras then say "have fun" with no real direction that gets me. It happened a couple months ago and not only did they do that they never spoke to me other than "eh ok I guess" and then told me to redo it. In the end I still hate the piece to this day. Gotta love doing commissions!

i feel your pain. when i decided to open commissions myself i made sure to outline every little rule i could in my description, solely to avoid people making huge changes. my rule is ill send the sketch and that is the only open window they have to make edits. once we've confirmed any changes or that its good unless its a super small add on or detail (say someone wants a bow on the characters head or something that easy to slap on) i refuse to make any changes. i personally give the person a week time to expect art to avoid people trying to rush you. also you didnt mention it but pay should almost always be upfront.few exceptions. theres too many cases of people running off with art without paying.

I was shivering more and more as you were telling this story, I am so sorry this happened to you. It really does get irritating when someone is wanting to change so many things in a commission, I had that happen just this year for the first time and it was from a regular commissioner! They were asking me to change things left and right and even add more to the picture when they ordered a commission that only goes up to the waist. I had to add a rule that no more than 3 changes can be made and if there is more they have to pay. No one should have to draw what they are uncomfortable with, and you are right, you always ALWAYS have the right to refuse to do a commission, you are never obligated to do one. I really appreciate you making a video on this, many artists who are starting out need to know that they can refuse commissions. Also lovely art ; w ; glad you have great commissoners like this one that make it worth it!

One of my favorite rules is "change limits". Like you can request 1 change in a sketch commission, 2 changes in a lineart commish, and 3 changes in a full colored/shaded commish. It costs extra to get more changes and to change something once it's in the lineart stage. I think that's a great safe middle ground like if you're gonna take this much more of my time then you're gonna have to pay for that time.

I had something similar happen to me once. You see, I'm not famous at all, in fact, my channel is just a testing one, so in the future, I'll actually start my career... but I decided *Why not do some commissions for some of my classmates?* So I did so... I'm usually quiet, but lots of people wanted me to draw things for them, so I did commissions!.. Little did I know, I'd go horribly wrong... A guy approached me, asking for a commission. Of course, I said yes, but what he asked for had me... shocked. What he wanted was for me to draw myself in a tight bikini, that only covered my nipples, he wanted my hand to be covering my private just barely enough. I was stunned! I understand that, yes maybe i'm short and big chested, which I can understand why I am found kinda cute, but this just stepped over the line. I said 'N-No!' and when I did, he leaned in and told me if I didn't he'd (I won't mention it as it's not appropriate, and makes me uncomfortable saying so). I eventually nodded, telling him to pay me later. I then took my stuff and went to the principal's office, telling them what happened. He was suspended for a week... To this day i'm still nervous to start up commissions again.

I had an experience where I was drawing free art for a person's character and when I finished it and I felt like they would like it since they asked for free art of their character and I sent it to them. They told me that it looked terrible and they blocked me. I found out later that they were passing it off as their own art but I honestly don't care since back then my art skills were pretty bad haha but I guess they actually thought it looked good enough for them to steal. I'm glad I got over it and never bothered to remember their name lol.

This is a big reason why I discuss the commission before payment. But then again, I have a Paypal. I also never require the customer to pay until they're satisfied with what I'm doing. It doesn't require any extra effort on my part, and if they ask for something I don't feel comfortable doing or whatever, nothing has been paid so I can tell them "no" or just stop drawing it and toss it away if needed and start on another possible commission. I always want to make sure everything is crystal clear.

I don’t do commissions because I’m not confident enough in my art ability, but I have taken requests. I would do a “stack post”, which included maybe three requests at a time, and one person tried to get me to redraw theirs because “the shade of pink was wrong”. I might’ve done it if it was a commission, but it was honestly such a minuscule difference in the pink so I just never responded lol And don’t worry, your video was really good :3

My commissions allow for a maximum of three revisions based on initial sketches. Any deviation after the concept stage requires additional payment as I am paid for time and effort. It's no different than if you paid for a performer to do a magic show and then wanted them to redo tricks, stage extra performances and alter their act. They might do it, but they will darn sure charge you for the extra time and skill. As for the NSFW, the second he requested nudity or certain body parts to be enlarged or focused on past what is normal, I would have told him he has breached the contract and cut him off.

I dealt with a similar situation once. Someone commissioned me to help them build a game on rkblox so i was like sure. But they kept changing what they wanted literally every other hour. THEN they would go and ask me to start working on a totally different project for them. At the time i was about 15 and had no other way to get robux so i just kinda put up with it. I didnt realize at the time that this was a toxic thing because he was my first commission. Long story short i started getting irritated with the constant changes. Then he randomly told me that he hired someone else and payed them all his robux upfront. So obviously i was like wtf man i worked on your various projects for weeks and got no payment. He told me he wasnt gonna pay me because he wasnt going to use anything i spent HOURS making for him... God i was pissed but finally just reached a point where i was like "whatever" and dropped him because i realized he wasnt going to pay me no matter what. People are awful somettimes. And we all have to deal with at least one bad commission in our lives so we can learn for the future :)

I genuinely HATE whenever my friends ask me to draw them or ask me to draw something and, yes, that'd be fine normally, but they usually end up gettin' all pissy with me about me not wanting to do it or saying they'd need to give me something if they wanted me to spend time on something for them; I try to tell them that if I chose to accept their request then they'd need to give me something in return for the time i'd take. of course, they'd all get mad at me for this and i'm like "just cause i'm your friend and you're probably mine, doesn't mean i'll do this for you." and then they hate me for a few days and then come crawling back with apologies. I only give my drawings to people when I WANT to, so whenever one of my friends tries to snatch me drawings, even if it's playful, I shit myself and damn near have a meltdown since I've Asperger's, or some mild form and I cannot handle when people do things w/o my consent in any way and especially when they touch or take my art w/o my knowledge and then they make me feel bad since i'm "overreacting", it causes me so much anxiety when I show my friends drawings and especially when they try and take it off me to look at it

I agree if they ask for something and you were ok with their initial idea after them reading a tos and signing a contract, but then they change what they want and it's something you're not ok with, to not work on said commission. But I would not say to just keep the payment and tell them, "no go away". After taking on the commission in the first place. Unless it literally states in the contract, "I can keep your payment if I don't like adding weird things bro sorry. I can drop your commission at anytime because I don't like the subject, BAIBAI." ngl though, I would love to see someone make a contract where the last line is, "YOU WANT ME TO DRAW A PEEPEE FOR GAMES? I don't do commission but free art with some little rules cause since I'm a veye smol ass artist I've only have two weird requests but from the same person . So I met this person who wanted a danganronpa characters tied up and bandaged- since I'm a people pleasure unless they cross the line I kept holding them up and faking I was doing it until I left the chat. But a year later(cough this year) I opened art requests again and guess who comes back- yaaaay so he came back and gave me a new danganronpa character and a whole another character- but I luckily turned them down as nice as possible but it turned out well. I'm not saying they are bad cause not all weird request come from bad/weird people ^0^""

One time I spent 5 HOURS changing things for a commissioner AFTER I completed the 2 hour drawing. A total of 7 hours on 1 commission when I had so many slots. It was suppose to be a simple commission too ;v;

Omg!! Your hilarious I know this wasn’t meant to be funny. Also you didn’t seem awkward although I have been considered awkward so it’s normal to me I guess...keep making more videos like this. I enjoy these story time videos with art being created, it also helps me to improve my own work as I get to see how a person does this or certain effect to a piece.
