How did they ever fit this game into the C64's memory!!! Great graphics, great sound/music, all those layers of parallax scrolling too! Awesome!!!

1990: I was preparing for my entrance exam to the university, studying hard for months... Playing Katakis every day relaxing. I can remember the whole game by heart.

So the guy behind Turrican made an R-Type clone... Will have to give this one a spin. If I can find it, that is!

Yeah that's why you get a robot holding a "Katakis Lives" banner in Turrican 2 on the ship stages

the story is even better... They made this clone... But irem was about to sue them... Also irem was impressed how the game was made for the c64 so they made a deal.. they had to stop selling katakis but they got a job to port the original r-type to c64. it was even made with the same engine... You can look them up its the same guys in the credits for this and r-rype c64 version.. ;-)

What is that fucking glow on the Katakis logo? Please correct me if I am wrong, but I didn't have that in the original release.

Not all C64 reacts the same to some routines. Depends on the C64 kernal, there are different kernal versions with bug fixes/slightly changes. Probably you have a C64 of the first years?

So close to R-Type in presentation that even the enemies are near-rips from the games. Tsk tsk. Still, appears to be much easier than R-Type.

R-Type and this game are from the SAME guys! Of course it's identically it's the same engine, they also used this engine for both Turrican titles.

@@tallikx Check also out: Denaris ;) It's again this game with another name. First was: Katakis Then: R-Type Then: Denaris And here the story: Katakis technical and graphic similarity to Irem's flagship shooter R-Type led to a legendary agreement between Rainbow Arts and R-Type publisher Activision shortly after the release of the C64 version, who wanted to avoid a legal dispute. It was agreed that the Katakis programming team would also implement R-Type - the game was ready within 6½ weeks. The game was then marketed abroad as Denaris from 1989 for legal reasons. A new edition in the low-price segment by Rainbow Arts was later published in Germany under this new name.
