Nice, the music still kicks ass. That opening is so catchy.

"Manfred Trenz wrote an amazing sprite multiplexer, and we both created the graphics for the then-named Katakis. When released, Activision thought that it was too similar to R-Type, and, with the threat of legal action, it was pulled from the shelves. After some negotiations with Activision, Katakis was rebranded and released globally as Denaris - with only the name change and a few graphical tweaks, such as backgrounds and enemy sprites. The only condition from Activision was that we had to deliver the C64 and Amiga R-Type conversions in just six weeks!" -- Andreas Escher, graphic artist

Its the "version" after the sprite and level changes because it was tooo r-type like. ;-)

The graphics in level 2 suck compared to the same level in Katakis. It's a shame that Rainbow Arts was forced to make those changes in order to differentiate it from R-Type. Despite some bugs, the original Katakis is much better than Denaris in my opinion.

Andros2709 why are they so similar? Different markets called for different names?
@Andros27095 жыл бұрын
@@summerWTFE Nope. Rainbow Arts was sued by Irem because Katakis was considered a rip-off of R-Type. So they were forced to change some of the graphics and rebrand it with the name Denaris. As a part of the agreement, Rainbow Arts was also asked to take care of the C64 conversion of R-Type, which is quite ironic if you ask me. If I remember correctly, the original Katakis was only sold in Germany for a brief period of time before it was pulled off the shelves.

Andros2709 hah. That was a peculiar deal to say the least. I didn’t think one could get sued a lose based on game mechanics alone. Maybe those were different times.
@Andros27095 жыл бұрын
@@worldoflongplays Yeah, you are right. I also erroneously said that Rainbow Arts was sued, but actually it was its partner Factor 5 that got into trouble.
