My boat has a speedometer calibrated in MPH. A boating instructor insisted that no boat has its speedo in MPH...only Knots/hr. Who is correct?

Its really easy to remember Port and Starboard when you realise where the words originated: Starboard is from Steer-board. Before boats had wheel houses and were steered by hand with a rudder, this was on the right of the boat because most people are right handed. When the boat pulled in to Port, it would have to dock on the left hand to avoid damaging the rudder on the right side of the boat. Hence the Port side. So you had the Steer-board side and the Port side. Hope that helps.

Good overall, but the Freeboard is from the top side of the hull to the water. So basically, the draft and the freeboard always interacts together (adding the draft and the freeboard is the total height of the ship side) depending on the weights applied to the boat (fuel, fresh water, stores, etc).

Please, What is the area or the divider, between the Transom and the working deck? I think it's a mod on my Dell Quay Dory, prevents backwash when hitting the beach!
