VERSE 1 Blessed are the ones who do not bury All the broken pieces of their heart Blessed are the tears of all the weary Pouring like a sky of falling stars VERSE 2 Blessed are the wounded ones in mourning Brave enough to show the Lord their scars Blessed are the hurts that are not hidden Open to the healing touch of God CHORUS The kingdom is yours, the kingdom is yours Hold on a little more, this is not the end Hope is in the Lord, keep your eyes on him VERSE 3 Blessed are the ones who walk in kindness Even in the face of great abuse Blessed are the deeds that go unnoticed Serving with unguarded gratitude VERSE 4 Blessed are the ones who fight for justice Longing for the coming day of peace Blessed is the soul that thirsts for righteousness Welcoming the last, the lost, the least VERSE 5 Blessed are the ones who suffer violence And still have strength to love their enemies Blessed is the faith of those who persevere Though they fall, they'll never know defeat

Jerisa, I am a Christian misfit, also. This song is so moving. I totally relate to your comment re worship music, especially in church. It makes it hard for me to get "into" worship. And, I have't been in church regularly for 4 years! I know I need community, and to hear His Word regularly. Thanks for sharing!

I'm going to share this with my youth group tonight. We've been studying through the Sermon on the Mount for several weeks now and we're studying the end of Matthew 5 this evening. We've been blessed to see how time after time Jesus points us back to the beginning of His sermon where we learn that blessing begins when we realize our poverty of spirit and truly see our need for Him. Your song is a beautiful reminder of much of what we've learned over the past couple of months. Looking forward to more in the coming weeks and months.

Ezekiel 18:20-28 20 The soul that sinneth, it shall die. The son shall not bear the iniquity of the father, neither shall the father bear the iniquity of the son: the righteousness of the righteous shall be upon him, and the wickedness of the wicked shall be upon him. 21 But if the wicked will turn from all his sins that he hath committed, and keep all my statutes, and do that which is lawful and right, he shall surely live, he shall not die. 22 All his transgressions that he hath committed, they shall not be mentioned unto him: in his righteousness that he hath done he shall live. 23 Have I any pleasure at all that the wicked should die? saith the Lord God: and not that he should return from his ways, and live? 24 But when the righteous turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and doeth according to all the abominations that the wicked man doeth, shall he live? All his righteousness that he hath done shall not be mentioned: in his trespass that he hath trespassed, and in his sin that he hath sinned, in them shall he die. 25 Yet ye say, The way of the Lord is not equal. Hear now, O house of Israel; Is not my way equal? are not your ways unequal? 26 When a righteous man turneth away from his righteousness, and committeth iniquity, and dieth in them; for his iniquity that he hath done shall he die. 27 Again, when the wicked man turneth away from his wickedness that he hath committed, and doeth that which is lawful and right, he shall save his soul alive. 28 Because he considereth, and turneth away from all his transgressions that he hath committed, he shall surely live, he shall not die.

I like the effort to do worship from the margins but unfortunately this song’s lyrics still reify notions of patriarchal and imperial reign via notions of ‘kingdom’ and an abusive male ‘lord’ (e.g. the lord of the manor ruling over serfs and creating the working-class medieval White European trauma that later got blown through Black and Brown bodies in the later-formed United States; see Resmaa Menakem’s My Grandmother’s Hands). Would love to see music using mujerista theologian Ada María Isasí Díaz’s concept of the kin-dom, and perhaps replacing ‘lord’ with ‘guru,’ ‘mentor,’ ‘sage,’ or something more relational.
