Are you ever unsure about your spoken English? Are you confident that you are pronouncing each word correctly, yet your sentence doesn't sound quite right?!
If so, the problem may lie with your intonation, or use of pitch- a very important (but often overlooked) component of the American English accent!
In today's video, we're going to analyze several sentences in terms of their intonation to convey a natural and convincing message.
If you think any of your English learning friends may benefit from this American accent video, then please share it with them, I truly appreciate it!

What should I do on daily basis in order to improve my intonation and sound exactly like a native English speaker?

"Can I ask you *something*" almost sounds like the person you've been talking to hasn't allowed you to ask questions. (This is coming from a native speaker.)

I don’t think I’d stress it that way, but hence the beauty of choosing our words and intonation to reflect our individuality:-)

Here's a thought: have you ever had your clients listen to their speech (and speech of native speakers) backwards? It's possible to try to think of what the phonemes would sound like backwards, but they often sound quite different from what one would expect.

Prosody is difficult. It's so full of nuance and sensitivity to context. Small changes can make a big difference in meaning, and small errors stand out like a sore thumb.

Hi! Teacher Victoria.Thank you so much for your kind words, it's so encouraging and inspirational. I've been following your videos for a while, I can't agree with you more. You're doing a great job. In my point of view, intonation and pronunciation are the key to spoken English, words stress and sentences stress are important in our communication, it makes us sound more fluent, confident, and natural in English. You've helped us reach our goal. I'm Chinese, a non-native speaker, my goal is to be able to communicate with confidence as a speaker and as a listener. We learn English with teacher Victoria and follow the basic principle of collocation, contraction, reduction and many others. We'll reap what we sow. Thanks so much. Have a wonderful day. Take care, Victoria. Bye for now. I'll see you soon for the new lesson.

I was thinking of something else, this time about Polish (which is a language that you know quite well from what I understand). You recently mentioned Polish phonemes for a word--I think that is was "cat". Does Polish have any quirky phonetic rules? For instance, Japanese has very simple rules for phonemes, but it does have a few quirks. One is how the "ka" is turned into "ga" in some cases. The Japanese word for "paper" is "kami", but in the word "origami", the "ka" in "kami" is turned into "ga"; hence "origami".

Hi Gregory! Yes Polish does have a few quirks, it’s not “perfectly” phonetic. There are several sounds that can be represented by more than one spelling, for ex. ż/rz u/ó ć/ci etc. Also, final voiced consonants are devoiced. For example, “śnieg” (snow) would have a final /k/ pronounced, the voiceless counterpart of /g/. Same would apply to any voiced/voiceless consonant pair- b/p, d/t, z/s etc.

@@AmericanAccentMastery I wonder whether English has the most quirks, exceptions, contradictions, etc. between spelling and pronunciation. It really is a problem.
