You're very much free to break as many rules as you want if the result looks good. 👀 Botticelli's Venus has an unnaturally long neck, but if you don't notice that unless you're specifically looking for it, it means that the body as a whole looks good.

At the beginning of the video, you mentioned that the mistake is NOT making the eye line perpendicular to the center line. Then you explained in the two box example that due to vanishing point, the angle between the eye line and the center line is NOT 90 degrees unless the eye line is exactly at the horizon line. So if I understood it correctly, the eye line doesn’t always have to be at the horizon line? If so, then it doesn’t have to be perpendicular to the center line, but rather have the angle that the vanishing line where the eye line is at have with the centre line? Also, the green lines from the two box example confused me even more. How did you know where to draw them? Are they supposed to just be parallel to the horizon line and that’s it? Or they actually connect to the vanishing point?
@tigretam9106
@tigretam9106 7 ай бұрын
What he means is that even tho on view it dosnt make 90 degrees, on true dimentions(idk if its called like that in english, but i mean if you saw the image from the front with no perspective) it does make 90, so you gotta transform those 90 degress into the equivalent of the perspective. And the green lines are just to show you how the perspective affects the lines, and those green lines represent a perpendicular line to the perpendicular of the horizon line(in short a parallel yes)
@Artnmak
@Artnmak 6 ай бұрын
Ok so here’s what I think after spending too much time staring at this video. The eye line should be parallel to where you draw the box. If the box is at a 3/4 view, the eye line will not be parallel to the horizon. Vertical like are always at the same angle, so an angled eye line will not make a 90° angle with the vertical centerline
@antiStrikerS
@antiStrikerS 6 ай бұрын
your comment confused me even more but here's what i think: When drawing in 1-point perspective, the center line of the face is NOT a 90° angle (not relative to the vanishing point) unless it is aligned with the horizon line. That's basically the entire video. The red lines are to represent the angle of the box and eyes, while the green line is to represent a straight line. That part was him explaining that not all straight lines are straight in a 1-point perspective

So they should be perpendicular - with respect to the perspective. Depending on the perspective this could mean the eye line can even be curved while being perpendicular

Fun fact, real people are generally less symmetrical than artistic representation because thr rules of creation do not submit to the rules of symmetry. 😊
@memeclips2122
@memeclips2122 4 ай бұрын
Better learn from proper anatomy before you go on drawing people. Most people are symmetrical, especially the skeleton. I'd say learning the symmetrical way makes more sense here.
@joelferguson625
@joelferguson625 4 ай бұрын
@@memeclips2122 anatomical symmetry is generally true, most people don't have one arm or leg longer than the other by any noticable amount. Hower, facial symmetry is considerably more rare as less than 5% of people have what is considered perfect facial symmetry, which is my point. As far as anatomical symmetry goes as consumer's of media we are conditioned to appreciate aesthetically symmetrical forms and therefore it's ok to draw people perfectly symmetrical. For drawing facial portraits, being true to the subjects form, whether symmetrical or not is absolutely preferred. You're both correct and incorrect simultaneously on the use of anatomical symmetry, amazing, Schrodinger's artist.
@memeclips2122

@joelferguson625 right, I do agree with you, I'm just saying for beginners I feel like it's better to learn and understand drawing from a symmetrical perspective before drawing more natural body structures like maybe 'slightly uneven face structures' and other stuff.

It's important to remember that a horizon line should be relative to the "camera" and bisect the direction it is pointed. It's not where you necessarily put the actual horizon, unless the viewer is staring at the literal horizon. So the part of a character that crosses the horizon is where the camera is "looking".

I’ve never done it this way. I think of the head as a ball with a jaw attached to the bottom of it. Draw two circles overlapping each other for the basic head size then figure out your head position. I use contour lines for the rest of it. Curved lines that wrap AROUND the head instead of going straight across in any direction. The human body has NO straight lines when it’s on a perspective. Study tons of references and trace the main points with a red pencil or digital monoline pen and stick to basic shapes ie circles, squares, triangles, ovals and rectangles. You’ll be able to figure out a lot more that way. Also when figuring out the eyes, draw eye sockets rather than eyes as you see on a normal person. Feel your own and draw on top of the reference in the same places you’d expect to feel the ridges. This will force you to learn where to place circles that you can then use as guidelines for eyes and eyelids and eyebrows. Drawing things from scratch without any guidelines is hard even for professionals so utilise them as the tool they are until you feel they don’t help you anymore.
