Is their a specification for the correct dowel diameter vs spring ID? E.g. the dowel should be 10% larger than the shaft the spring is intended to ride on?

We can calculate how much the torsion spring ID will reduce in operation. It depends on the design of the torsion spring and how far the spring is required to deflect. It is important that the spring does not bind on whatever is on the inside of it as this will prevent the spring from working correctly and lead to the spring failing prematurely. Hello sir, thanks for the video. I got one simple question, should a torsion spring deforms only in the direction of reducing it's diameter? Is extending-diameter-way of operation is not appropriate for torsion spring?

Hello JM, glad you found it useful! Yes that's correct, a torsion spring should always operate in the opposite direction to the wind direction. For example, a right-hand (clockwise) wound torsion spring should work going anti-clockwise and a left-hand (anti-clockwise) wound spring should work going clockwise. Another way of thinking about this is the spring should always “close up” in operation. If a torsion spring operates in the wrong direction for its design, it will become overstressed very quickly and is likely to fail. Hope this helps!

Is there a rule of thumb for stress limit in torsion springs? e.g. 80% of yield stress

Hi Michael, ideally you do not want the stress to go over 70% of the tensile of the material. However, with torsion springs, this is often difficult to maintain and in reality higher stresses can be accommodated.
