Recently, I had the privilege of visiting Jeka Poultry Farm, a prominent farm in eastern Uganda owned by Mr. Basangwa Johnson. Mr. Johnson, a highly respected poultry farmer, shared invaluable insights into the operations of his farm, especially concerning feed production and management, which play a crucial role in poultry farming. One of the key takeaways from my visit was the emphasis Mr. Johnson places on feed quality. He explained that feed constitutes about 60% of the farm's income, making it the most significant expense. To ensure the birds receive the proper nutrition, he starts by cleaning the maize used in the feed. He stressed the importance of using clean, dry maize, free from dust and debris, to avoid compromising the quality of the feed and, consequently, the health and productivity of the birds. Jeka Poultry Farm sources maize and other feed components from reliable suppliers. The farm does not grow its own maize due to its large scale, housing over 100,000 birds. Instead, the farm focuses on ensuring that the maize is properly processed and mixed with other essential ingredients like maize bran, lime for calcium, and imported concentrates from the Netherlands. These concentrates are rich in essential nutrients and are meticulously mixed to create a balanced diet for the birds. Mr. Johnson also highlighted the importance of managing the cost of feeding without compromising quality. He explained that birds must lay eggs at a production percentage of over 60% to be profitable. If they fall below this threshold, they are not covering their feed costs, which means they must be sold. This careful management of resources and production efficiency is key to running a successful poultry operation. Moreover, Jeka Poultry Farm not only produces feed for its birds but also supplies other small farmers in the region. Mr. Johnson mentioned that not all farmers can afford to import high-quality feed ingredients, so he ensures that his farm provides access to these essential resources. The farm's approach to feed production is systematic and age-specific. Different formulas are used depending on the birds' age, ensuring that they receive the right nutrients at each stage of their development. This meticulous attention to detail, along with adherence to tested formulas, ensures that the birds remain healthy and productive throughout their lifespan. In addition to discussing feed management, Mr. Johnson emphasized the importance of planning and ensuring a consistent food supply for the birds. He warned that missing even one day of feeding could set back the birds' growth and production by a week. Therefore, he advises farmers to plan within their means and ensure that they never run out of feed. Jeka Poultry Farm is a model of efficiency and sustainability in Uganda's poultry industry. Mr. Basangwa Johnson's dedication to quality and his willingness to share knowledge with other farmers make him a key figure in the region's agricultural community.

It takes some experience to zero on what works and exert all your energies there. He used to have all types of animals and plants and he narrowed to poultry and particularly layers and he has no regrets .
