Common Rail 4BT ISB170 Fired up on Shop Floor

I started this ISB170 engine using just a couple of jumpers on the original Workhorse chassis harness. It was a brand new motor and transmission that was removed from a Workhorse chassis that never had received a body. Its been sitting around for a few years, so it needed to be hooked up and tested before I sold it.

Hello I have this same exact engine and tranny that I’m putting into a 07 gruman step van I’d love to start the engine before putting it into the van wondering if you can sometime send me info with wiring and all that to get that puppy started?

If its anything like a 5.9 from 98.5 or newer. 3 wires runs it without fuse box.

Do you have any idea what the Workhorse part number is for the chassis side harness? I'd like to order a replacement.

Sorry - I do not. I am sure it was on the paperwork that I had at the time.... but that was 10 years ago.

Sir. Cold you please consider doing a Video about the Electrical modifications that you did to get it to run? I want one of these but the warring is the problem I wold have swapping it into my project. Ted H.

+vaccumme I sold the engine and no longer have it, so I don't have anything to take a video of. It was really simple to figure out . I MIGHT have a digital copy of the wiring harness.... I'll look for it, but I make no promises.

Can a P Pump be retrofitted on 3.9 ISBe's?

With enough time and money anything is possible.

@@HotRodTractor It's just a bit silly for an engine to have all those wires just to make it run. I've seen P-Pump conversions on 5.9 ISBe's and they work well.

@@ProfoundOverland I lucked out and received a paper copy from Workhorse with the motor. There is an off chance I might still have a digital copy, but it will be a while before I can look as I believe that is in storage. If I even have it.

Jason, could you help me? I have the same engine and wiring harness is similar, I'm from Brazil, the motor cames from a F250 donor... I need help to get it started...

Your best bet is to get the wiring diagrams for the vehicle you removed the engine from. Basically the computer needs power and then distributes that power to everything else. I think I only jumped two items to get it to start and run (with me jumping the terminals on the starter with a screw driver).

is the fuel pump necessary to run the motor like this? i thought the isb170 had a mechanical pump built in?

Alfredo Rodriguez I don't recall the specifics on this video, but if it had a mechanical lift pump it was bypassed. And I always feed the high pressure pumps with positive fuel pressure even though some of them say you don't have to.

Alfredo Rodriguez in the video it looks like I had an old FASS pump, for install I would have used a Holly Blue or a Fuelab pump. Any number of aftermarket low pressure diesel compatible lift pumps could work.
