It has many different names.” Further regarding the hoagie from Wikipedia: “The hoagie roll is used to prepare the Philadelphia cheesesteak sandwich and various other submarine sandwiches. The terms submarine and sub are widespread and not assignable to any certain region, though many of the localized terms are clustered in the northeastern United States.” Hoagies are sub sandwiches.
@MGmirkin4 жыл бұрын
When Babu said "it looks like a 'marine'," I assume he means like a "submarine"? If so, that's where our name "sub sandwich" comes from (we just split the word "sub"-"marine" the other way)... Which is where "Subway" got its name from, too, I'm pretty sure. Funnily enough "subway" is also a term for an underground railroad system we use for transit. But pretty sure "subway" [the food chain] named itself after sub[marine] sandwiches more-so than the underground rail system? Though, granted, subway rail cars are also long kind of tubular things, so I suppose it's possible that the name could have come metaphorically from that. But the original "sub sandwich" was, I believe, based off of "submarine" rather than "subway [rail cars]..." Anyway, whether one calls them sub, or hoagies, they're delicious nonetheless! ^_^

A sandwich without the top piece of bread here "Massachusetts" is called an "open face" sandwich.
@CommonManShow4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for information
@MGmirkin4 жыл бұрын
Correct! :) We've made "open face" grilled tuna and cheese sandwiches before. Delicious. Basically, canned [or packet-packed (in water, preferably)] tuna, with mayonnaise, or Miracle Whip, mixed in, is typically how we'd prepare the tuna, and then typically eat it 'cold' in a sandwich with cheese, or else we'd make a "grilled tuna and cheese" sandwich by grilling the sandwich in a pan with butter on both outside bread faces, until the cheese melts and the bread is browned. Or for an "open face" grilled tuna and cheese, we'd slice a loaf of bread down the middle horizontally, cut it into sections layer tuna on the top cut face, and then sliced cheese on top of that, then broil it briefly in the oven until the cheese melts and maybe browns a little bit. Then we'd eat it warm while the cheese is still gooey / stringy. Cheddar is great, or mozarella, or a little of both. Can also use grated cheese in place of sliced, and mix cheddar + mozarella. Delicious. Gotta' be careful with the tuna / mayo, though, as mayo doesn't "keep" very well, so needs to be refrigerated properly once opened, and anything made with it, like tuna needs to be eaten promptly while cold (with any left-overs refrigerated and eaten promptly as well), or cooked well (as with grilled tuna & cheese). If the mayo spoils, it's pretty easy to get some gnarly 'food poisoning...'

When I think of these sandwiches (I know them as either "Submarine" (Babu caught onto that comparison) or "Hero" sandwiches...the name varies regionally) I think of them having more Italian style bread and fillings. A crustier bread and Italian meats (I realize that the pork and beef based meats are probably not appropriate for your tasters), cheeses, and cured veggies. I was once in Florence, Italy and went to a sandwich and wine bar frequented by locals (always talking politics, of course). It was run by two brothers, one of whom spoke English. I asked them to just make me sandwiches they thought would be good and pair wine with it. Those were some of the best meals I have had. Cured meat, cheese, cured veggies, and crusty bread are amazing.

In response to how filling hoagies are: most people eat them for dinner; those who eat them for lunch tend to eat something lighter for dinner because they're still full from the sandwich. And I love how Pummy talked about how she could make it for her family; if she did make her version of it, I'm sure they loved it.

Hoagie is a name for it in some parts of the US, generally it's just called a subway sandwich, not to be confused with a sub from Subway (sub is short for submarine, because it's shaped like the old ones) (:

Babu said it looks like a “marine.” When I was young, we called them submarine sandwiches. 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
