One of the things that always scares plenty of people away from wiring jobs is the "difficulty" of sorting through that rats nest of wires and the unending amount of different types of tools you always find yourself reaching for. If you are doing the job right you would usually find yourself surrounded by crimpers, wire strippers, a soldering iron, solder, electrical tape, heat shrink, zip ties and even more items at times. The job becomes nearly impossible to fix when you are out riding and often will leave you stranded.
Thats why over here at Common Motor we are excited to show you guys the Posi-Locks and the Posi-Lock Products. They are high quality, made in the U.S.A., and reusable wire connectors that you can install in minutes using only your hands. We have been running them for thousands of miles on our bikes and have nothing but good things to say about them.

I wish I had known about the posi-tap when I installed my Dynatek ignition. That seems like a better way to tap into the power wire than the blue plastic splicer that comes with the unit.

Hi there! I’m very new to doing anything electrical and had a basic question so forgive my ignorance. How does the posi tap NOT damage the wire? It seems like poking a hole through it would damage it.

Why not demonstrate how hard it is to pull apart the posi lock connectors the same way you did the regular butt connector?

lmao seriously. Though, the reusable part and no tools required make them a bit more attractive than reg crimp connectors

I love it. Thank you for your calm jokeless way of presenting information. I brought some simple posi-locks for my on bike tool bag and I now fully understand how to use them. The only issue you you did not address is their waterproof status?
@Common-motor
@Common-motor 4 жыл бұрын
They're water resistant. They have a version thats waterproof for marine applications but given that the bullet connections aren't waterproof on the bike the extra cost doesn't make sense in our opinion.

You can put some dielectric grease inside to help with the water resistance.

Can they handle the current of the wire they are connecting. For example: #14 wire is rated for 15 amperes in conduit. However in automotive and appliance applications, where the wire is in open air, the current is often about 25 amperes. Will the blue 14/16 connector handle 25 amperes continuously?

The glass inline fuse holder is a nice for keeping the diameter of the fix smaller. The blade fuse holder just too big.

Those are pretty cheap crimpers. If you have expensive crimpers they crimp 100% effective. But interesting product I could see myself using them.

I want to use the posi-lock on my motorcycle but I need something waterproof. Are they recommended for such connections?
@Common-motor
@Common-motor 4 жыл бұрын
Posi-lock does make fully submergable waterproof connectors but we don’t sell them at Common Motor just yet. We’ve found their standard connectors do just fine on our bikes even through the rain. The waterproof ones are quite a bit more expensive and meant more for marine applications.

Posi-lock makes a marine sealed grade connector but we don't carry that style. It's a bit overkill for the motorcycle world. I've heard good things though!

advice use the posi locks not the posi taps use t taps why t taps.. well they only impact the wire alittle you can remove them then put alittle tape over it the posi tap splits the wire so much aka pierces it if you ever need to remove it you got a hole though the center of the wire your using so only use on low voltage and lower down the line.. so if you have to cut out the hole area and splice it right you have plenty of wire do the same with t taps.. never use a t tap etc close to the connector end if you have to add wire solderin is the best thing instead of this
@coryulrich6489
@coryulrich6489 3 жыл бұрын
You have a crappy crimp tool. A real proper crimp is harder to remove. That still doesn't mean this connector isn't objectively better. But these only apply to butt splices anyway, so you'll probably want to get a proper crimp setup.
@chesterbreder5368
@chesterbreder5368 7 ай бұрын
You did not use a "proper crimping tool". You did not create a proper crimp or you would not been able to pull the wires free. While I do like the Posi Taps, they are not as good as a Proper Crimp connection.

That is the most rubbish crimp tool and should NEVER EVER be used. A proper crimp will break at the conductor and not at the crimp.

Better than standard crimps, but too big and ugly for a custom build or restoration

If you want to make wiring look very smart on your custom build use braided wrap and finish the ends with shrink wrap. Check out an electronics supplier's catalogue. This stuff is normally used to group wires together to make a loom or provide heat resistance. The 3mm one is suitable for single wires. If you don't like a blue or red posilock the simplest solution is to slip, say, a 2" a piece of black shrink wrap over it and hit each end of it with your wife's hair dryer ( or can use your own 😊). You can get shrink wrap in multiple diameters, with or without internal glue. The one with glue makes a reasonably weather resistant seal. Get some that shrinks at least 4:1.
