You are, it seems one of those that listen to and believe Russian propaganda, as it says that Russians are great. They are not. Nationality doesn't determine this. You probably think that Russian women respect men who value traditional values and who dress nicely. You also think that Russian women care about how they look and are feminine. You also think that Russian men are tough and manly. You also think that women appreciate men who buy them flowers. You also think that Russian women are well educated and don't use filthy language and don't behave in a decadent manner. All of these things are prejudices and lies, and they are successfully promoted on social media and KZbin channels, unfortunately believed by every Tom, Dick and Harry that reads them.

I was fortunate enough to invite a wonderful, smart Russian student for a date; she agreed. I wanted to impress her, so I thought I would memorize a few words. As I walked to the library, I was listening to the radio, and this song was playing. It was perfect. That's the word I would use. As we met at the restaurant, I opened the door, and I said "after you, babushka." Yes, I called a university student "babushka." The song on the radio was "babooshka" by Kate Bush. 🤣🤣🤣

Your experience is very different from mine. Okay, if you're very young in college like 18-21 it can happen that you don't plan with friends, because you don't have to, but once you start working or maybe have a family it is a different ballgame. Also, are you sure they were just sleeping?

I too am from the south, and what you call "southern hospitality" is really politeness. They have it too in Russia. Just because you're being polite doesn't mean you really like a person. It's civility, and nothing more. You can tell when someone genuinely likes you. They offer to be of assistance, and go out of their way to spend time with you. As a friendship progresses, it is the same all over. Some you can trust, and some you just can't.

I would say that in Russia a smile has two meanings. Either you see something very funny or you feel very happy. Or you're just posing for a cute selfie :) So the meaning of a smile is genuinely different. Thus when a stranger smiles at a Russia, it really feels weird. Like, 'Is there something wtong with my hair? Then what are you smiling at? You can't possibly be happyto see me, as I' m not your spouse or best friend". That is what it used to be like when I was a kid. But now we are becoming a little bit more into smiling.

A few superstitions we have in America are: break a mirror = 7 years bad luck. Or if a cat walks in front of you it’s bad luck. Or if a bird flies into your home one of your loved ones will die. Or it’s bad luck to walk under a ladder. There are lots of them and I have a few I like to follow but not all of them. One I like is if I see a falling star it’s good luck to make a wish and not tell anyone about it. I also hang a horseshoe upside down as it holds all the good luck inside- if you hang it upside down all the luck will fall out.

The smiling thing is same in Lithuania. I had some culture shock coming from rural Scotland and wanting to smile at everyone and no one smiles back, soon forgieners acclimate and stop smiling at everyone 😄 of course they do, when talking with someone especially younger generation. But we have inside joke that Lithuanians don't smile. I guess it seems Russia has the same situation. ☺️

It similar wth a lot of cultures that stayed over iron curtain . And as she said smiling alll the time is considered stupid or fake. And I think the biggest stereotype you can tell I'd saying that Russians, Belarusian, Ukrainian, Polish is all the same thing. There are many similarities but russians and poles are like German and French and Ukrainians are like from Austria and Baltic States Netherlands - you don't confuse them do dont do that to us. People are people of course how and where you grow up influences you but then what kind of person you are can't be judged by where you o your parents are from. Comparisons are frustrating and never fair and they build up more stereotypes.

@@bobeczek01 don't get me wrong. I'm not saying they're all the same. Just noticed a similarity. I've friends from all over post soviet countries and have travelled to a few. There's definitely differences as each culture is its own. But some do have similarities which will come from having some shared history experiences and leadership. It was just something which I noticed a big thing there, that foreigners tend to notice especially foreigners from places like us and UK and Germany. I totally respect the culture though and after a while living there adopted similar attitude as lithuanians and got used it being that way and totally accept it.

I've always wondered about why Russians always look so serious and when you get to know them they turn into being the so generous, kind and friendly. I've noticed this behaviour of people from many other Eastern European countries as well. Unfortunately, I have never been to Russia, but those who have been to Russia say that Russians are one of the most hospitable people in the world.

@@bmorg5190 Of course not. What I'm trying to say is that Russians are, at least here in Norway, known for their great hospitality. I'm talking about the Russian people now, not Putin, Kremlin and Putin's circle of oligarch friends. Note: I wrote this before Russia's current attack Ukraine, and let there be no doubt that Ukraine has my full support in this war. I still think it's should be allowed to write positive things about the Russian people and the Russian culture in general.

I am interested in Russian culture and history as well as your food and the vastness of your countryside and its treasures. I don't believe stereotypes. Wow, no smiling? Chill out guys! I am happy to be alive so I smile a lot and laugh a lot. I would not be looking for love or something going to Russia and would try to learn as much of the language as I can to get by. I would look forward to learning via your club.

So much fun! Very interesting topics. You're not supposed to open an umbrella ☔ inside in America or you will be struck by lightning ⚡. I think it is mostly some of the most progressive women in America that would not appreciate some of these gestures out of social principle. I think most women, like most of us, want to feel respected & cared for. These traditions give a common way to give these gifts & affection, & as with all traditions, some may reject them for modern notions of care & respect. It's important to know your audience 😃 Many flowers to you, ladies, I enjoyed your lesson!💐💐💐

As far as smiling and sincerity, I will not say that the American way is better. I just think that it’s all a matter of perspective. I smile when I meet people because I like meeting new people. I genuinely enjoy videos like this because I’m interested in the experience of others. I want to show that I’m open to being a friend to the people I meet, so I do consider my smile sincere. I have had strangers tell me that they really felt like I was honestly happy to see them when they came into my workplace or something, but I am. I am happy to help people. I love helping people, and maybe that is difficult for others to understand, but that’s just my perspective and general attitude.
