The issue isn’t decreased population, it’s that the population is lopsided. A decreased population is a good thing in my opinion, but what they are having is a situation where 1/2 to 2/3 of the population is on the verge of retirement, and the rest of the population can’t support them.

Others have already mentioned it, but I have to hammer this point because the overpopulation myth is not only persistent, belief in it leads to some truly dreadful policies. The current global total fertility rate is around 2.27 (World Bank) to 2.3 (UN). Global replacement rate is 2.3. This means we're already at or slightly below replacement rate, and birth rates the world over are on a downward trend. This means that, unless something unforeseen happens to reverse this trend, we may live to see the total human population reach its peak. How high will that peak be and when will it occur? Let's look at some projections: UN: 10.4 billion in 2086 The Lancet: 9.7 billion in 2064 Wittgenstein Center: 9.4 billion in 2070 Given the current global population of ~8.1 billion, we'll see an increase in population of around 16-28% over the next 40-62 years before the population starts declining. The Malthusian idea that the population will grow exponentially until we run out of resources is not only utter nonsense, it is actively harmful to society.

Not to mention that we have more than enough land and resources to feed a far larger population than we have today, but we waste tons of food, especially on animal husbandry, and also we just don't distribute excess food to starving people because capitalism.

Not to serious us out, but the bigger threat than overpopulation is exactly under population in mine and many others opinions. If you look at the birth rate of most thriving countries it’s declining throughout the world. Look at Japan, it’s staggering and they’re desperate to turn it around. We won’t have enough people to take care of the elderly, and more people means more shots at scientific breakthroughs, etc. But this channel is a comedy, thanks for my Ted talk and love what you guys do

Pretty much ALL of the population growth in the next decades is set to happen in poor developing nations, especially Africa. East Asia and The Western World actually have the exact opposite problem, where we will end up with too many retirees, and not enough young people to replace them in the work force. So Dean, I really wouldn't be worried about too many people being born. Australia is actually looking pretty screwed in a few decades by the exact opposite problem, unless you'd be happy with replacing your entire future with immigrant work forces. (Which Alt-right political forces would just *love* to exploit and grab power off)
@tayzk5929

Sure but population growth in poor countries is pretty awful. Yeah it's not overpopulation that's the problem, it's overpopulation of less competent people, and underpopulation of competent people.

@@peterlewis2178 Not exactly because there are some examples of rich and privileged people who aren't very competent. Although generally, more competent people gain more money and privilege by their work. I also don't completely judge it by economic status, as some people are very competent there, but completely lack in social skills/parenting skills and effort etc. Which I think is just as important as the economic.

Overpopulation is a canard to hoard resources. It is only easy to sell as a problem for Western nations because they tend not to see their own consumption as a problem in comparison to Asian and African countries.. China's one child policy was a misguided reform policy that ended up being brutal and awful for its population. I'm sure you didn't think of this conversation as anything but a throwaway but man is it not only contentious, Dean managed to take on the worst aspects of it. I truly do think and hope both of you research it more.

Well I wouldn't assume someone actually is in favor of something just because it was brought up in the conversation as part of a conversation about overpopulation. One can be worried about overpopulation in general and talk about China having had a one child policy without necessarily agreeing that it was a good thing or that you're in favor of that particular thing to "help" with overpopulation. Unless I missed where he specifically said he was in favor of it, I totally could have missed that part, lol. 🤷🏻‍♀

Overpopulation is not a threat. It's literally the opposite. Population collapse is one of the biggest threats to civilization, especially social democracies and social programs. Also all of the stats point to collapsing birth rates, not increasing birth rates.
