@Awhmanitsdanttv3 ай бұрын
I mean on the one hand. The color of Chang’s skin is “black” but that doesn’t mean he’s doing black face. So it is kinda racist in that of itself but equating dark skinned to black. Because you’re calling all dark elves black people.. see the weirdness to that
@ramuki94273 ай бұрын
While I do not think that this episode's use of black face warrants removing it from streaming platform, Chang's makeup is undoubtedly remenicent of black face in the way it was portrayed in Minstrel Shows waaay back in the late 19th century. Chang's makeup ofc only consists of the overexaggerated black skin, while missing some of the other "markers of blackness" these freaks used back then (overemphasized big lips for example), but it still is eerily similar. Black face is, of course, severly racist, but I do believe that there are some accaptable uses of it - In Tropic Thunder for example, one character is in black face to make a point about racist Hollywood executives casting a white guy as a black character to enhance the "star power" of the in universe movie they are shooting. For me, it comes down to intention: Is the joke on black people (in which case it is in my opinion most likely racist and unacceptable), or is the joke targeted at something or someone else. The Chang example I think falls into the latter, because it is about Chang's ignorance in regards to the perceivable issue with his cosplay and not to racially attack black people in general.
@Awhmanitsdanttv3 ай бұрын
@@ramuki9427 black face was only the fact. Using context clues of his neck exposed top chest and hands you can surmise that he painted his body for the role. That’s cosplaying not black face
@ramuki94273 ай бұрын
@@Awhmanitsdanttv That is not entirely true, there are examples of black face covering more than just the face. Makeup that completely covers even the necks of the performers has been documented in photographs. I fell like the agrument about whether or not this constitutes black face is futile to begin with. The criticism has evidently been made by ppl before that perceived it as such, which is why streaming services decided to take it down. Hell, even the characters themselves comment on how similar it looks to black face (both Jeff and Shirley outright point out the "walking hate crime"). The joke only works because common sense immediatley makes the connection, even if Chang in his ignorance did not intend it to be black face. My point is that while we should be critical of black face, this episode is probably one acceptable example of how you can get away with it.
@TheBloobster3 ай бұрын
@@ramuki9427 Is blackface not, in itself, the concept of someone other than black pretending to be a black person by painting their face black? If so, there was no attempt by Chang to pass himself off as a black person, and thus was just painting his body a darker color. Unless a dark elf was offended by this cosplay, I really dont think it has anything in common with what people consider to be blackface.
@ramuki94273 ай бұрын
@@TheBloobster Yeah, I agree with that sentiment at the very least, but the point remains that Harmon (or the writers) very deliberately played with the concept of black face when they wrote this joke. I think censoring this episode by removing it entirely was unjustified, but at the same time I can see why people might get offended by this joke, even if the intend was never to reproduce actual black face.

Definitely one of the most iconic episodes. Danny Pudi absolutely stole the show, right from when he starts with the gnome voice arglegarble thing--just fucking KILLS me every time I see it! It's so unexpected and hilarious. Again, it's one of those moments that's SO GOOD because the actor just full on COMMITS and starts chewing the scenery like he's Joan Crawford reincarnated. It's so over-the-top that it's actually perfect, and he keeps that energy the entire time. Amazing. Legend. No notes. In addition, this is Chevy Chase the way I liked him in this show--he's a great villain. Sometimes it felt like they didn't know what to do with him, but putting him at odds against the group made it feel like there were actual stakes and tension.

By this point in the show’s history, Chevy Chase was becoming more and more hostile to work with, and the writers actually started including some of the ridiculous things he was saying in their meetings into the actual script. The line “… and how you look at me, like I can’t get erections anymore” was a classic example of that. And even though you cut part of it out, the “I don’t like being excluded, Jeff. Do you? … YES!!!” Is classic winger. It perfectly fits his character, like when he says the line “I’m an EXCEPTIONAL narcissist”.

The kicker - Chang’s paint isn’t even black - it’s fricken navy blue! Which was a deliberate choice by the creators as it showed Chang to be in poor taste without denigrating an actual race of human beings. The only one denigrated is Chang, as he is in every episode. Such bullshit to remove a truely brilliant episode of television for what amounts to navy blue cosplay.

Like I feel pretty strongly about it, like for iasip the gang decided themselves to remove the episodes because they acknowledged that what they did was straight up blackface and they didn't want to deal with the backlash. No one forced them to. For community there was no racism at all, no call to remove the episode from platforms, and despite Shirley's quip which is clearly a joke, no one would call this blackface

Also you have to figure that Pierce was playing such a bad guy because he was just roleplaying his character, the evil antagonist of the game. In the backstory Pierce is an expert D&D player, having played for years and actually knew the creator of the game. At the end Neil recognized this and that's why he said it was the best game he ever played. The writer of the show stated he was disappointed in not having an ending where Neil and Pierce continued to play together.
